Well that’s interesting for sure and definitely a possibility too 🙂 but I agree with @thedarkestcrow’s answerhere that depending on where the forest is located, Sebastian’s nose might not have been enough to find those corpses.
I like the theory though because since we don’t know where the forest is (right outside of London, or in a park, or farther away…), if it’s close by, the smell could be the reason as to the “how” indeed.
You know what I find funny actually in that theory? XD It’s that Seb who dislikes dogs so much totally behaved like one in that cliffhanger, especially if he relied on his nose to find the corpses, hahaha!
So definitely a theory to keep in mind (be it for the smell of the gas or simply for the scent of decomposing bodies) if the forest is close by.
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts Anon, and please take care! 🙂
Hey! Thanks for your thoughts and that’s actually exactly what @thedarkestcrow referred to in this post, but what we were all wondering about was the “how” he found the corpses, and what directed him to that forest in the first place. 🙂
I’m pretty sure he had nothing to do while waiting for Ciel which is why he got curious yes (great examples by the way :)), but that still doesn’t explain how he found those corpses in the forest. I think we will probably solve the mystery in the next chapter when Seb tells Ciel what he found, that’s bound to be interesting in any case. ^^
Thanks for your thoughts anyway and here are others’ thoughts on the “how” if you haven’t seen them 🙂 [1] [2]
Something I’ve been wondering about: How did Sebastian find the mass grave at the end of chapter 113? Abberline didn’t tell him that there were more corpses than the ones Scotland Yard had already found (and I think the Yard doesn’t know about the corpses Sebastian located). But after their conversation Sebastian changed his earlier decision of waiting for Ciel and went to find the grave.
The place where he finds it seems to be in a forest, so I think it isn’t that close to where the Sphere Music Hall is located.
There’s one panel where Sebastian is sniffing and it seems like this helps him locating the corpses.
So does this mean that Sebastian can sense dead people? Even over such a distance that he seemed to know exactly that there were other corpses than the ones Abberline mentioned and where to find them?
What’s strange about that is that in the past, Sebastian didn’t seem able to sense the dead. In the circus arc he makes a remark about not being able to sense the kidnapped children at the circus. And he mentions that the reason for this could be because they are already dead:
And in the Weston arc he wasn’t able to sense the presence of Derrick and his friends because they weren’t alive anymore:
Sebastian can sense human souls and that’s how he can feel the presence of living humans. However, after their death their souls are collected by the shinigami, so Sebastian wouldn’t be able to sense someone whose soul has been removed and who is dead.
So if Sebastian can’t sense the dead, how did he find the corpses in the latest chapter? And if he can only pick up the presence of souls, could this mean that these corpses still have their souls? That would mean that the shinigami weren’t able to properly collect their souls when they died. Might this be another clue that Undertaker is involved…?
So maybe Sebastian doesn’t refer to the unharmed bodies when he calls the corpses “lovely” but to the fact that their souls are still present…
Actually I think Seb can sense the dead a little (as in as you said he notices the absence of soul), even if I’m not sure this is how he found those bodies.
When it comes to that panel of the purple dormitory, I think he just meant that he couldn’t pick up anyone inside because all the people were out, Derrick and co weren’t at the purple house in the first place.
But yeah in any case when it comes to the last chapter, I’m not sure that’s how he found those bodies and it’s really intriguing…
(Answers in the next chapter, probably? Because if the souls are still in there, technically they shouldn’t be “dead”?? I have no idea what’s going on personally lol)
I always thought the strange feeling Sebastian had when touching Agares was because he wasn’t able to sense a soul. So Sebastian would only be able to sense that someone’s dead because of the lack of a soul?
(And I wonder what happens if someone dies but doesn’t get his soul collected by a shinigami… Ghosts?)
Mass graves were common back then, so I guess it wouldn’t come off as a surprise if Sebastian or anyone found one? The simplest explanation I can think of is the earth was softer and that’s how he figured out something was buried underneath.
Since there are fresh corpses as well as skeletons it’s likely that this grave was opened a few times already so you could be right that the earth was softer there. But I still wonder why Sebastian chose to search for more corpses in the first place and why in this forest of all places.
Based on hos he is sniffing, I would imagine he can smell the corpses.
Corpses have a specific, pungent smell to them that makes humans wanna throw up even getting remotly close to them. As a demon, I think his sense of smell is vastly better than the smell of humans. This is one reason they use dogs to find corpses and lost people, they can smell them over a much further distance, even when buried underground.
That’s true, but I doubt that this smell would reach Sebastian at the Music Hall. I think there are graveyards with corpses in a closer distance in London. So why would Sebastian find these corpses in particular?
I wondered about the “if someone dies but their soul isn’t collected then what happens” and maybe Yana intends to give an answer in this arc (lol ghosts haha), but so much corpses at the same time who didn’t have their soul collected? If that’s really the case then something must have happened to the Shinigamis on the job somehow…
(Edit: Just saw on my dash that @glacierspirit and @thedarkestcrow had exact the same thoughts, but since I had already written this post and I just can’t bring myself to delete it because it took me a lot of time to write this down I’ll post it anyway \(^o^)/)
There has been an intense discussion about the latest chapter in the Japanese fandom in the past few days and there was one theory which I personally found very interesting, so I’m gonna share it here! =D
As the title says, some Japanese fans had the idea that Bravat and the sect’s aim might be gaining blood from its followers, i.e. the sect secretly “steals” their blood while they are sleeping in the hall. The reasons why we regard this theory as likely are listed below =D
The 4 different stars (Sirius, Canopus, Vega and Polaris) could actually stand for the 4 different blood types: A, B, O and AB.
“Sirius is extremely rare” (ch111) and “Canopus is rare”, too (ch110) → Sirius might stand for AB, which is the least common blood type (4%), and Canopus for B which is the second least common type (10%) in UK. (See this article about blood type distribution by country: X)
The reason why the meetings of the holders of each bracelets are held on different days might be to avoid possible mixing of the different blood types.
People have to wear those Roman costumes so that it’s easier for the sect to take blood from them.
Baravat’s fortune telling might be a method to tell what blood type the person has. (There might be some sort of serum with antibodies in the cup, thus Bravat can tell what blood type the person has depending on how their blood reacts to the serum. Source: X)
Bravat’s ‘personality analyses’ based on the stars perfectly correspond with the “blood type personality mythos”. People who are not familiar with this might think “Wtf, what does one’s blood type have to do with their personality!!??”, but this is such a big thing in Japan and many people seriously believe in this bullshit pseudo-science. (You can read about it here: “Japan and blood types: Does it determine personality?”, “The importance of blood type in Japanese culture”.) So, according to Bravat, people under the protection of Canopus are “individualistic, do their own things and they are extremely attached to things they like” (Lizzy & Redmond). This is a stereotypical “B”-person. And people under the protection of Sirius are often a “genius-type” and “two-faced”, which are commoly known personality traits of people with the blood type AB (Ciel and Violet).
The mysetrious corpses might be those people who died from bleeding.
The bodies are too ‘lovely’ and there are barely any signs of livor mortis. → When people die from bleeding, the formation of livor mortis as well as the decaying process is slow and weak.
People get drinks and snacks after they woke up. -> I’m not sure about other countries but in Japan the donors are usually given something to drink, especially orange juice, and to eat after blood donation. This was actually the scene where fans hit upon this whole theory XD
Yana once posted a photo of the book she was reading at the time (source: X). Its title is “Blood work: A Tale of Medicine and Murder in the Scientific Revolution” and it’s a true story about a guy in the 17th century who was one of the first scientists that experimented with blood transfusion.
The blood type system was discovered in early 20th century, but considering that the technology as well as science in Kuro-verse are always 30-40 years ahead of the time the story is actually set in (1889), I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to assume that the sect already discovered the exsitence of the blood types and the method to tell them apart =D I mean, we saw a modern planetarium in this chapter, but the first planetarium was actually built in Germany in 1923, so 34 years later^^;;
However, as much as I like this theory (and also, blood transfusion is the kind of topics UT might be interested in, too), it still has some ‘flaws’, the biggest being that Abberline stated that the ‘lovely’ corpses had no visible external wounds. So we’ll have to wait and see, maybe we’ll get more information about this next month! Neverthelss I think it’s interesting and personally, I can imagine Yana going this route~! =D
The more I think, the more it seems to me that people in Blue sect are giving their blood:
– 4 stars = 4 main blood types;
– Good meal – to recover quickly;
– “Light” clothes – to provide access to the veins in the places where it is the less noticeable;
– Comfortable chairs – they are almost similar to the blood donor chairs by their construction:
– Ciel felt dizzy for a moment when he stood up from the chair, this is exactly how the donors feel after blood donation.
I don’t know how Bravat detects blood types, but those dead bodies might have been the consequences of the experiments with wrong blood transfusion.
And the last thing: in the first song from the Chapter 112 they sang: “We offer up our own lights to protect the eternal radiance”. Light = blood?..
What do you think?..
That’s a really interesting idea. Maybe that would also explain why Bravat needs to prick people with a needle in order to find out under which star’s protection they are. He could have some method to see what blood type one has depending on what color the liquid in the cup changes into.
I just think that if the people at the meetings gave their blood there would be a puncture site on their arm or wherever they inject the needle. The corpses, however, didn’t have any injuries.
Just my thoughts as usual, so you don’t have to read and even less to agree. 🙂 As some kind of TL;DR preview though, if you’re not one to consider that Lizzie’s character might have potential when it comes to the plot (aka if you hate her and don’t think she has her importance), then this post might not be for you. Thanks for your consideration 🙂
This post will talk about this scene…
And I will just advise to read @wondrouswatchdog‘s post if you haven’t, because it gives a nice possible interpretation of the cogs (up left) and the moon changing panels (next to Lizzie kneeling). As for me I’ll focus on Lizzie words and the settings of the scene to convey what I think might be happening.
First, when it comes to the settings I think it’s important to point out that…
this scene is happening from Lizzie’s point of view: Ciel is very probably under anesthesia (the sleeping gas) and you don’t dream under anesthesia. Also he would have no way to know what outfit she’d be wearing in the first place (and he doesn’t mention that scene either after he wakes up meaning he has no memories of it).
Ciel is wearing the outfit of the Sphere music hall, except for the shoes and his eyepatch, which means that we can suppose this scene is linked to him being drugged in the Sirius room.
It is not sure how long Ciel stayed asleep during the chapter (Sebastian had time to go investigate after all but then again he moves fast), so we can’t say yet whether this scene happened at the Sphere music hall or not (personally the windows remind me of the Principal’s office at Weston, so a church maybe?) Although considering that Sebastian might sense it if Ciel were to be moved to a different location (since he’s able to feel when Ciel falls asleep), I believe he was probably simply moved to a different room.
When it comes to Lizzie’s words…
Ciel… I’m sorry… I… can’t save you.
I’ll be direct: Lizzie is a fighter and what she wants is Ciel’s happiness, so for her to think that she apparently “can’t save him” means that this is about something she can do nothing against on her own.
A few people privately raised the possibility of her talking about Bravat and the Sphere music hall (meaning that she wouldn’t be able to save him from Bravat’s trap), and while I like the idea, it’s not the most logical one in my opinion, because:
Why would Bravat allow Lizzie to see Ciel and to possibly tell him about it (even if he was out cold)?
Ciel also still has the freedom to come and leave the Sphere music hall, which means that Bravat or whoever is behind a potential trap can’t really control his actions.
So for all we know, after being caught off guard once in ch113, Ciel might as well decide to never go back behind the Sirius door and in that case, there is no need to save him.
Besides, even if we’re talking about a trap and even if Lizzie was not capable to save him, well I’m pretty sure that she’d know Sebastian would see to Ciel’s safety.
So if not a trap, what else would cause Lizzie to think that she won’t be able to save Ciel? And save him from what?
Well, for methat scene means that Lizzie finally discovered about the contract binding Sebastian and Ciel, or rather, I think someone told her about it.
And it would explain why she thinks there is nothing she can do about it since Ciel voluntarily sold his own soul to the devil.
After all, this…
…is why Lizzie was having issues with Ciel in the first place. So, if her greatest desire was to know what exactly happened to him (to understand him better) and if she joined Bravat because she thought he had a solution to her problem, obviously the person answering her on this question would know about the contract and the events leading up to it.
There is a bunch of other reasons as to why I think that she was told about the contract and I’ll try to explain as best as I can.
Ooh, this is very intriguing! I think Lizzy finding out would provide for some very interesting development both for her and for Ciel and heck, I would say even Sebastian. Something like that would very upsetting for Ciel no doubt and I definitely think he wouldnt be able to just regard her as another obsticle getting in his way. He wouldnt let Sebastian kill her as I imagine he would want to if he sees her as threatening the contract which would cause issues between him and Ciel. And then there’s Lizzy knowing what happened to Ciel and what drove him to make the contract in the first place and feeling like she cant do anything about it…angst for everyone! Am I the only person who likes to see her favourite characters suffer? Probably. XD
Also showdown between Seb/Ciel vs Lizzy/UT? Yes, please, to whom do I sell my soul to make this happen? Since Sebastian is taken already. XD
Thanks for your addition 🙂 Yes I like the possibility that it might trigger development for everyone be it in a good or bad way (even Seb since he has his own interest as a nerd when it comes to Lizzie XD).
Taking even UT for example, if he was extremely fond of Claudia and Vincent, him using Lizzie as an emotional weapon against Ciel (whether she chose to fight alongside him or not) would definitely show him as being totally lost in despair, because that would mean he is destroying the family of people he really cared about (even if his goal towards Ciel seems to be about keeping him safe from Sebastian in the first place).
I honestly feel this arc has a lot of dark potential (heck I was even saying privately to a friend that I was considering UT driving Lizzie to suicide as the darkest possibility, maybe so she’d become a Shinigami and a stronger ally against Sebastian. Imagine how Ciel would feel then) and if UT is indeed involved in this arc, I feel Vincent’s prediction is going to become true…
(Sorry for rambling on UT, but the guy has the most ironic character development ever and even though he’s not against Ciel technically, he remains the greatest villain if he intends to try saving Ciel in the worst way possible)
In Chapter 113, Ciel finally goes through his door to find out about the secret meetings.
These door are located in the music hall, which I had questioned in the past, but these rooms themselves are interesing. The one that Ciel enters is huge. Even he is surprised that there’s this much space within the muisc hall.
Soon, Ciel enters the room and apparently fall asleep.
The moment he does, Sebastian is surprised. On one hand it would seem odd for Ciel to fall asleep, so Sebastian would naturally be caught off guard.
At the same time, it seems strange that this would cause Sebastian not to be able to sense Sebastian. He even questions if Ciel fell asleep or was unconscious, and he should know how he senses Ciel during both. Ciel falls asleep every night, and he’s been unconscious.
However, do we have any guarentee that Ciel is still in the same place? Ciel was unconscious or asleep. What if he was moved to some place where Sebastian has trouble sensing him?
These rooms seem far too large to be part of the music hall, and now Sebastian has trouble sensing Ciel. What if these rooms are a manipulation of space somehow?
It’s hard to say for sure. Hopefully we’ll have the answers soon.
There is a bunch of other reasons as to why I think that she was told about the contract and I’ll try to explain as best as I can.
1) Many people theorized a few chapters back that maybe Bravat knew exactly who she was when they first met, because he had intentionally used Greenhill to bring Edward who would then bring Lizzie if he had a good time, and I’m starting to think these people were correct because…
We can guess something happens to the guests after they’re out cold, thanks to the sleeping gas, which is why Ciel appears to be in another room with this weird cogs behind his chair, but the question is why is Lizzie with him then?
If Bravat’s powers were real and he really *guessed* that Lizzie had troubles with her fiancé without knowing either of them, how come she was allowed in the room with him? I seriously don’t think she’d break in, because how would she know he was at the Sphere music hall this Friday in the first place?
Ciel went to Bravat as a working boy from a factory (so as a boy from the lower classes), so how did Bravat know Lizzie and Ciel were acquainted if he didn’t know about them before? He’s technically supposed to see the stars protecting people, not if they’re lying about their identities (except for non human cases).
Lizzie being in the room with Ciel while something is apparently being done to him (the cogs) is a hint that Bravat might have known exactly who they were to each other since the beginning, otherwise I don’t get why Lizzie would have been allowed to see him.
2) Another strange thing is that Lizzie doesn’t behave like the other people at the Sphere music hall. As illustrated by Greenhill, many guests are all about “radiance” and almost all of them are positively extatic about everything, but look at her…
Like Violet, it doesn’t seem to be her case at all.
So if she was just another sheep for Bravat, because their meeting was a coincidence and he really had no plan about her or Ciel personally, why is she still depressed like at their first meeting? Why hasn’t she forgotten about her troubles like seemingly Redmond, Greenhill, Bluer and many others did?
She’s even different from Violet because Violet behaves with the other 3 in a group so he doesn’t stand out not being as happy as them if he plays along, but her? All alone looking depressed or crying over Ciel? This doesn’t sound like she found radiance like she told Edward she had.
As a side note, it’s also interesting to note that her outfit of the last two chapters doesn’t seem to fit the Greek or Roman theme seen so far. I don’t know if it’s actually a hint since I’m not sure of what the Greek/Roman outfits refer to, but it could be relevant. Maybe.
When it comes to who possibly told her and why:
Two possibilities for the “who” (without including possibilities of an unknown character being introduced): Bravat or the Undertaker.
In Bravat’s case, either his powers are real and he found out at some point that “the Sirius boy” was Lizzie’s fiancé, or he knows from a third party, most likely from UT himself.
It could also be the Undertaker if he’s hiding into the Sphere musical, because he saw Sebastian’s record and when the contract was made (Campania arc), which is how he would know what truth to tell her.
(A few people also noticed a parallel between the scene with Lizzie in ch113 and the one with UT in ch108, so who knows, maybe this is a hint too)
Removing Ciel’s eyepatch might have been a way to convince her of the contract’s existence, but I’m also thinking that if the clogs behind Ciel are somehow linked to cinematic records, maybe she was able to actually see everything he went through during that month and that’s why she’d be so sure that she indeed “can’t save him”. Technically humans can’t see a cinematic record besides their own of course, but maybe a new machine was somehow invented and that would be illustrated by those clogs attached to Ciel’s chair? This is pure speculation at this point.
As for the why, well, here’s the part where everybody might start to disagree but…
There is a lot of chance that UT is involved with this arc for reasons already explained and we know UT isn’t really a fan of the contract (be it because he wants to use Ciel himself or just simply because of his attachment to the P family). Bravat keeping Sebastian outside of the Sphere Music Hall made Ciel spend more time investigating on his own and so possibly getting tricked without Seb noticing in time.
Lizzie’s character is also of importance to Ciel for different reasons and telling her the devastating truth (namely that protecting Ciel and hoping for a bright future will just never happen, in other words that everything she trained for so far will be useless) before offering her a solution might be the best way to have her “change sides” and actually start fighting for Ciel (or rather against Ciel’s own decision about his fate).
For now I think whoever told Lizzie didn’t mention that there was a possibility to save him. What possibility though I don’t know, but I’m thinking that if UT is so adamant about breaking the contract, it must be because he has the idea that it’s feasable (but then again we’re talking about a guy who wants to bring back the dead so… craziness is his thing).
In any case, let’s say there isn’t any other possibilities besides killing Sebastian to break the contract, telling Lizzie could still be interesting for someone who wants to make Ciel react because…
Lizzie isn’t just anybody when it comes to Ciel so she could be used as some kind of “emotional weapon” (her depressed because of him or just simply involved with this side of the story would hurt Ciel). Besides, between that and what happened during the GW arc (Seb almost eating Ciel) it could trigger a deeper character development and Ciel taking the time to think about every decision taken (not that it would necessarily change anything but still, more character development).
This one is a bit gruesome but Lizzie is strong, so if UT is behind all this, knows Lizzie is strong and thinks he might need help defeating Sebastian for real, he could try to manipulate her with the truth in order to make her hate Sebastian and to make her choose his side, giving way to a Ciel & Seb vs Lizzie & UT conflict.
I don’t think Ciel would see Lizzie as an enemy, nor would he hate her, but he would blame himself for getting her involved (and this might strain the good duo vibes of Seb&Ciel), and besides, UT is no nice guy and would be totally manipulating her to reach his goal, so… Well, the whole thing might become a very emotional turmoil for Ciel, which would mean that things would also stop being “easy” for Seb’s good meal.
(I’m sorry I just don’t think Ciel is the guy to just shrug and smirk at Lizzie knowing and being sad about this. Otherwise he would have told everyone about the contract since day 1)
…I think I mentioned all I wanted to say so I hope it’s somehow understandable but as always feel free to ask for more explanations.
When it comes to Lizzie knowing about the contract though, the simple fact that Ciel lied to himself in ch95 with her as the contradiction is a pretty big deal in the first place, and it makes me think that even if Lizzie’s words were not about that in ch113, then she will come to know about it before the end of the arc anyway.
Since the important parts of 113 (like the Lizzie sequence) have already been discussed, I’m going to take a crack at overanalyzing an unimportant (?) part lol.
So Abberline meets and Sebastian and tells him what’s going on (secretly of course). He then asks for Ciel and Sebastian’s cooperation. But won’t he get in trouble with Randall for that, Sebastian asks. And the answer is yes:
But after he says it, Sebastian looks genuinely surprised for a second:
Why? I think it could go many directions, but it’s at least a little significant. Last time we saw Abberline, Sebastian was trying to bribe him with money. And here, the good inspector is outright admitting to going behind Randall’s back for this case.
That’s probably something Sebastian never expected from Abberline of all people. Humanity is full of surprises, isn’t it?
The other possibility is that he was surprised by the way Abberline phrased it; the outcome is the same, but saying “to serve the Queen” is a lot different than “to protect the people.” Those words make the watchdog’s job sound outright heroic and we know that just isn’t true. But Abberline’s not wrong here.
A lot of Ciel’s missions have been about stopping troublemakers and keeping the populace safe (Ex. Jack the Ripper, Campania, Circus). The Blue Sect falls into this category.
Protection seems to be a major theme this arc- there’s the protection of the stars Bravat preaches and on another level, Ciel and Edward trying to protect Lizzie (who is trying to protect Ciel). And as always, the contract’s terms are the same- Sebastian’s job is still to protect Ciel.
Even though Ciel managed to infiltrate the sect just fine, we don’t know what will happen next- there’s that alarming rate of dying people to think about lol. This arc’s shifted a lot of dynamics so far- Edward interacting with Ciel more than Lizzie, Violet interacting with Ciel the most, Sebastian and Ciel separating, the antagonist (Bravat) knowing who they are from the get-go, etc.
Sebastian might not have Ciel’s orders to rely on for the rest of the arc. He could very well have to “save” everyone alone- his motives won’t be heroic and it’ll probably link back to “yummy soul yay” but like Abberline said, the actions will just happen to be the right ones.
Ok, so there’s a lot that smells funny about this recent chapter–it’s more than just the rotting corpses.
Referring back to Chapter 111, Bravat told Ciel that he was under the protection of the first-magnitude star of Sirius. However, the reaction that follows raises a few questions for me:
Maybe it’s just something with the translation–or I’m blowing this out of proportion–but how is Ciel the first person under Sirius these people have seen? Violet is under the protection of Sirius and there are more people besides Ciel when he walks into the Canis Major door.
Even though they’re just a small handful of people, I believe it’s safe to assume they are all consistent visitors of the events at Sphere Music Hall–especially Violet since he and the rest of the P4 are leaders of the bunch and are therefore required to be there. If Ciel was the first person under Sirius for some of those people to have met, then why? Social recluse though he may be, Violet, at least, is there all the time.
Moving on from that note, I’d like to point out something else: The way to tell which star a person is protected by from their bracelets is by counting the numbers of star charms the bracelets possess. Ciel, being under the first-magnitude star, only has one charm on his.
As opposed to those under Vega or Polaris which have three and four charms respectively.
Everyone is required to have these bracelets as form of identification: Everyone, except the P4. Instead, they often have an accessory for their outfits which mark their star protection. Last time it was two necklaces, one earring, and an armband: This time, they’re buttons/brooches.
This is just a small mark in the difference of treatment between the P4 and the rest of the group. Now, compare the picture above with the next one I’m about to show you:
Yes, there is a definite change of attitude among the members, but notice any parallels?
In this chapter, the P4 we’ve always known are now referred to as the S4, or the Starlight Four. In the same way that they were revered as the top dogs of Weston College they are given celebrity status in this new arc, and the groups that they each lead individually are now divided by star protection instead of what characteristics separated their houses.
Sphere Music Hall is literally a recreation of Weston College for P4. Instead of moving forward from their sins, they’re clinging to their old identities and reliving them in a new environment. Nothing’s changed and–based on this chapter–Violet is possibly the only one who can see that.
