Since I was already warned of the spoilers this morning I avoided Tumblr today until I’ve read the official translation tonight. I want to share some of my first thoughts about this chapter.
Of course the big topic right now is what was seen in the last few pages. I already suspected that this had happened to Ciel (or the twins) in the cult but seeing it being confirmed is still horrible.
There were, however, some other aspects in this chapter that I want to mention here.
The Kidnappers
After being taken by the attacker in the manor…
…our Ciel wakes up being in that trunk. But the kidnappers seem to be different people from the attackers. From what they’re saying it seems like they found Ciel…
And from the way they look and talk I don’t think they are professional killers like the ones in the manor.
Also, they don’t even seem to know about the twins being Phantomhives (the guy who buys them corrects himself as if not wanting to reveal their true identity, probably fearing they might be more expensive then).
So the kidnappers are surely other people than the attackers but since one of the attackers grabbed our Ciel it seems like he must have given the twin to the kidnappers or at least put him somewhere so the kidnappers would find him (and the twin, I guess). So did the attackers give the twins to the kidnappers intentionally…?
The Twin
I don’t know if it’s just me but somehow the twin looks a bit suspicious in some scenes…
…as if he had a plan but something went wrong…
…and now he’s feeling guilty…
I’m really not a big fan of the ‘Real Ciel is the mastermind behind the attack’ theory. But if he was being used and had a part in the attack… Maybe that could explain some things.
There’s also the thing about the ring. He said he took it from Vincent…
…which means he must have been there after Vincent was killed but before our Ciel got there. But since the dog was killed right before our Ciel got there the attacker must have still been there, leaving not much time for the twin to take the ring without being taken by the attacker and then disappear before our Ciel could find him. Unless maybe the attacker took the twin after he had taken the ring and disappeared with him before our Ciel could reach them. In that case, did the attacker leave real Ciel with the ring intentionally…?
The Cult
Again, there are images of stars and such, strongly reminding me of the Blue Sect…
(not helping that this guy refers to the twins as the “stars” of the party (though I’m not sure if that’s the same term in the original Japanese version))
The cultist is speaking French and apparently this is the motto of a ‘religion’ that really existed:
The founder, Aleister Crowley, also was part of a sect called Golden Dawn or in Latin Aurora Aurea (*cough* Aurora Society *cough*). (see also this post for more parallels) And both sects, Aurora Aurea and the Thelema religion, draw parallels to ancient Egyptian beliefs and god (*cough* Osiris Company *cough*).
Of course these parallels could just be a coincidence but it’s still a bit suspicious…
Could Lucifer be the statue shown in the last page of chapter 135?
(Not a perfect replica due to different pose, but the overall look is similar enough.)
It’s fitting as he’s a demon who used to be an angel before he was banished to Hell. Our!Ciel was once a nice, sweet kid born in a rich, loving family until he was kidnapped and reduced into a plaything in a cult. The twins’ lives basically fell from Heaven to Hell in an instant.
After our!Ciel condemned God, it was as if the Devil himself smiled and sent a demon to lure him further into the darkness…
I’m pretty sure I’ve briefly mentioned this theory here on tumblr a long time ago, but I’m bringing it back, because it’s still relevant even after all these months and is related to the latest chapter. Now to start off, Ishida has very blatantly connected Touka and Kaneki’s relationship to Yin and Yang before:
Yin and Yang is about two halves that together complete wholeness. When the halves are separate like this, they are the starting point for change. Both halves are chasing after each other as they seek a new balance with each other. That basically means that Touka and Kaneki’s relationship together forces each other to change and pushes both of them towards wholeness. Yin and Yang can be seen in the color choices and the use of opposite elements for the characters designs. While in this picture Kaneki has pale hair and dark clothes, Touka has dark hair and pale clothes. More commonly Kaneki also has the eyepatch on his left eye while Touka has her hair covering her right eye. A moment in which this Ying and Yang symbolism becomes especially important is in chapter 122 when Kaneki and Touka talk together.
Touka’s hair is black while Kaneki’s is white, her shirt is white while Kaneki’s is black and her stockings are black while Kaneki’s pants are white. The color palettes are the polar opposites and meant to indicate how they are the opposing halves of Ying and Yang. Another moment where this can be seen with other characters is just briefly before this scene when Akira and Amon talked.
All their pieces of clothing (apart from their shoes) and hair have opposing colors. What these scenes have in common is that in both cases the two people were separated for years before reuniting and also after that were immediately unable to to properly communicate each other and sort their relationship out.
However, they some time after that had their talk together and managed to connect with each other . Both couples still have plenty of issues and miscommunication to fix, but according to Ying and Yang, they should be able to eventually overcome those issues thanks to each other.
Now, the reason why I wrote this post today is, because of Urie and Mutsuki who funnily enough fit into this template we saw with Touka/Kaneki and Akira/Amon. They were both separated after Shirazu died and Sasaki left, because Mutsuki left the Qs squad as well to aid other squads on their missions. After that they only ever occasionally met each other before Mutsuki was kidnapped for months in Rushima. After that they got their reunion when Mutsuki was rescued, but had no chance to communicate properly with each other. Their miscommunication issues were seen at their strongest in chapter 126 when Urie was too afraid to properly confront Mutsuki and Mutsuki refused to listen to him.
After that nothing really happened with them until we get to the scene in chapter 154. The panel that made me remember this old theory of mine was this one where them being the opposites couldn’t be any more blatant:
They are also right now wearing clothes that make their color palettes the polar opposites and actually have been doing that since chapter 105.
All of Mutsuki’s clothes and hair are white while Urie’s are black. Urie/Mutsuki take this even further than Touka/Kaneki and Akira/Amon by having even different skin colors with Mutsuki being tan and Urie being pale. What makes me believe this was intentional even more was the fact that literally nobody wears the type of coat Mutsuki has apart from Aura in the CCG so I always found it rather strange.
Now to get to the point, I do think that Urie and Mutsuki’s relationship is meant to parallel the ones I mentioned before so I don’t expect that this fight of theirs will end badly. I actually believe they are able to finally talk properly and sort their relationship out like Touka/Kaneki and Akira/Amon did instead of someone dying or anything else tragic. Ying and Yang is about two opposing halves coming together to become whole and it fits well with Urie and Mutsuki’s relationship. Mutsuki wants a safe environment where they’re loved which Urie can give and Urie wants to belong to a family which Mutsuki can give. They have the power to push each other to change. They are perfect for each other, but due to unfortunate circumstances can’t find each other. While their unfortunate situation is a bit more extreme than Touka/Kaneki’s and Akira/Amon’s, I do believe it will have the same outcome. Maybe them becoming a couple is way too early, but I expect them to talk with each other and communicate properly.
Hi, I love you.
(also, do you think it’s interesting that while touka’s hair covers her right eye and Kaneki’s eyepatch his left, Mutsuki’s eyepatch covers his right and Urie has the moles under his left? Idk it’s just interesting that they both have distinctive eye features)
Thanks for noticing me senpai and pointing that out, because I forgot to add it to the post. Their kakugans are on opposite sides as well actually.
Interesting… It’s almost as though, Mutsuki someone who always felt out of control of what other;s did to them or how they looked at them. Now becoming the one who chooses to control and destroy his life and the lives of others (and has literal near complete control of his RC cells).
Has now become the one who controls and judges. Either ironically or more realistically purposefully, in order to be able to control his own fate.
Last year when chapter 79 came out and Tooru`s past was revealed, there was a marvelous post here that presented an idea that Mutsuki too has an lying habit. Every time Tooru went on to shaky territory when it came to the truth, he seemed to grab his shirt:
Now, I might be wrong since it`s a bit hard to see, but it looks like a little bit that Tooru is once again grabbing his clothes when he says that he would not care if Urie died.
Maybe he indeed is showcasing his habit here, and is actually lying and does not mean what he says there. Of course it´s possible that I am totally wrong, and Tooru has fallen so far that he means what he says there. That posture might be an artistic choice from Ishida`s part, so that the shape Tooru´s transforming kagune is not blocked by his hands.
I would also like to mention again that the original observation of Tooru`s lying habit was not done by me.
Hey Anon. 🙂 Ahhh, but don’t worry, it’s coming, this is the last confrontation which is why it’s an important one and Ishida is making it happen over several chapters, but the resolution is near, don’t you fear that!
Think of the current fight as the culmination of what Urie, Mutsuki and Saiko went through as separate individual and as part of the Qs team basically ever since the auction arc, even if Mutsuki’s issues definitely culminated during the Rushima arc because they were abducted by Torso and had to suffer through a lot.
I reblogged quite a few posts on this subject last week and even more recently after the new chapter, so please check them out, they’re really quite explanatory and reassuring. Besides, even Aura has plot armor now, which means that they probably will all survive this and Mutsuki will be given a chance at redemption by Urie’s and Saiko’s sides. 🙂
Cheer them on for the last fight Anon, they will all grow up some more thanks to it and you won’t have to worry about them fighting amongst each other afterwards.
Thanks for passing by and have a nice day. :3
Honestly, I still think that, besides Seb most likely eating real!Ciel’s soul (”the fee for crossing”), the fact that our!Ciel ended up losing his faith in God during that one month is a big part of why Sebastian said that our!Ciel is definitely the one who called him.
((Confirmation that real!Ciel is the one who attacked Soma and Agni if we needed any)).
“Survivor’s guilt is a mental condition that occurs when a person believes they have done something wrong by surviving a traumatic event when others did not.” [x]
And that’s all you need to know why “Earl Ciel Phantomhive” came to be born while our!Ciel’s true identity died with his brother: survivor’s guilt made our!Ciel believe that his brother died in his stead, his brother whom he saw as the strongest for a long time and who wanted the power to protect the two of them.
So he acquired more power than anyone else through contracting Sebastian and that’s how “Ciel Phantomhive” could be reborn even after he died in his little brother’s stead.
