You know, I just reread the chapter and I think this might actually be Kaneki starting to wake up. Rize was warping at the end of his dream, and it could have signaled a shift in his consciousness with her words resonating in his head.
If he’s not going to wake up right now and find it totally dark inside Dragon, he might have a dream of someone else…
Is from the first page of this arc, it’s so subtle that you feel like it’s only gonna apply to Kaneki choosing to go back and fight Juuzou. But this chapter it comes back and hits you so hard.
The whole opening page to chapter oh so long ago is actually an opener on this arc and Kaneki’s character arc. They both come down to the choices you make. Kaneki ends this chapter to that way he started that one it shouldn’t have ended up this way. Kaneki is tired, he is dying and this decision with these terrible ramifications were plotted by Furuta so something as simple and good natured as wanting to save your friends and family has been corrupted. He only wanted to save those he cares about and in the process destroyed so many others.
It’s tragically funny that the moment he becomes tired of all of the decisions he comes face to face with his first crossroad of fate. This moment is just made a lot better by the subtle foreshadowing Ishida left
ah… and I don’t mean to be exasperated, but I think Rize’s role is blindingly obvious, and the purpose of her appearing before Kaneki right now is a phenomenal representation of how an emotionally damaged person will still struggle for a long time with self-doubt and self-depreciation no matter how sure they seem about their choices.
Rize is not real right now. Just like during his torture, she is Kaneki’s inner voice telling himself that he was stupid and selfish– as if he deserves all of this.
Unfortunately, victims of trauma frequently blame themselves for the events that occurred to them, especially young children. Kaneki’s mother beat him and died trying to support both him and her sister, and he blames himself for not being worth loving. He gets attacked by Rize and winds up as an experiment– he blames himself for being gullible. He gets captured and tortured by Yamori, and blames himself for being helpless…
Science fiction dreams aside, it’s realistic and appropriate to show that Kaneki is definitely not guilt-free over his resolution to kill in order to protect the people he promised to protect. He’s still horrified by himself, especially over the knowledge that many of the the people who died by collateral damage were innocent.
There is absolutely no way a person as caring and reflecting as Kanenki could walk away from something this huge completely unscathed, regardless of the fact that he– once again– made the decision that he thought was best.
He had no idea that trying to live solely to be with everyone again would have such nightmarish results.
But this doesn’t mean he’s going to throw in the towel. Kaneki has been making tiny positive steps forward since Cochlea by recognized his shortcomings and realizing that the people he speaks to in his head are just manifestations of his own thoughts.
We even saw when Furuta rubbed all his fears in his face that it only made him try harder to live. I seriously doubt this is Kaneki giving up, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he turned around and bit her or told her to shut up. He just has to realize that Rize is just another figment of his imagination and that he deserves to continue trying.
Hi Anon and haha, I don’t think it’s supposed to be going that far, so no worries! :3
It’s something I’ve discussed before with @thedarkestcrow and we believe…
…that Lizzie was only authorized to see the twin when it was the evening, hence why she was shown wearing a nightgown, no shoe and no jewelry a few times.
Recheck ch112, 113, 114 and ch120, you’ll see that it’s always implied to be the evening or the night (through what our!Ciel is doing) when we see Lizzie in a nightgown. Not to say that she would spend the night with him or anything, but she would probably still spend a few moment by his sides (like in ch114, above).
That’s also why there would be such a strong difference with her outfit of ch116/117…
because these chapters happened during the day. :))
So don’t worry, I don’t think Bravat forced her to do anything that wasn’t proper for a girl of her age, except maybe taking her blood from time to time!
The ending of the first season was so good~. But I also liked the cruel ending of season 2 that made you like “AAAAAAAHH…!!”! I wonder what the ending in the manga will be like 😂 -Toboso
