Ch 110 Review: Bracelets

rationalkuroshitsuji:

We know bracelets are a plot point on this arc because Sebastian glares demonically at them. (ch 110 pg 17)

We don’t know what they’re for yet, but several people who appear thoroughly brainwashed are wearing them, including Lizzie (ch 110 pg 14).

Knowing this now, I would expect the members of the P4 to have been wearing bracelets in their appearance at Sphere Music Hall in chapter 109.

Well what do you know. They are.

Well, at least Greenhill has a bracelet (ch 109 pg 13). I think Redmond has one too, but it could also be the cuff of his shirt. I couldn’t find any other frames that feature either Bluewer’s or Violet’s wrists, but I’ll be watching out in future chapters.

(Chapter 110 can be purchased in English for $2 where fine ebooks are sold.)

Can we talk about Mai for a second? For most of Avatar she acts apathetic and nonchalant, sort of fitting into the ‘Emotionless Girl’ trope. Almost all of her plot significance is due to her relationships with the royal family of the fire nation, with both Zuko and Azula. She’s an evil sidekick, then a love interest. Her and Ty Lee have a somewhat comical friendship. We see her apathetic, but then we see her struggle to communicate. She’s the quiet, loyal friend despite her complaining. She’s the one who can deal with Zuko’s moods the best (other than Uncle Iroh who can deal with anything). She’s still self contained, but that she puts extra effort in for people she cares about.

‘The Boiling Rock’ is where she really steps out of her apathy. She confronts Azula, and her feelings, head on and is willing to pay the price. Thankfully Ty Lee is around to save the day. While we don’t see either of them until the end of the series, their actions are felt by Azula and are a considerable part of what leads to her eventual breakdown. After rotting in jail for a few episodes Mai and Ty Lee are set free. Mai hooks up with her favourite fire lord, Ty Lee makes friends with the Kyoshi warriors, and all is well in the world of Avatar.

Very funny. Characters don’t change just because the show’s over so it makes sense for their issues to be showcased in the comics. As we see in ‘The Promise’. Mai’s not always the best with her emotions so she tries to communicate with Zuko but doesn’t always have the emotional prowess to get her point across. Zuko, well, he stews in his own angst. Mai feels like she’s doing all the work in the relationship, and she’s not entirely wrong. She craves the communication they both lack the ability to have. She keeps her air of nonchalance most of the time, but we as an audience know she’s hurt, and at some level so does she. So she stands up for herself and leaves. It hurts her, but she knows she has to do it.

Then we get ‘Rebound’. Mai is living with her aunt and little brother. She’s not over Zuko, but she’s able to tune her feelings out enough to get through the day. Kei Lo comes along, and she’s willing to try something new. She’s not feeling it, but she knows she needs the distraction. Aaaaand it’s a trap. Her dad’s become a fanatic of the New Ozai society, and they try to kidnap Tom-Tom. It’s every bad memory hitting her at once. What does she do? Rescue her brother and get the hell out of there. More and more we get to see her motivations and mental processes. No matter how upset she is at Zuko, she knows he’s the only fire lord who can save the country from corruption. Even at a high personal cost she believes in him.

‘Smoke and Shadows’ came out and Mai is anything but emotionless in it. She charms Kei Lo for information, plans a counter attack agains the New Ozai society and follows through with it, defends Zuko, confronts her father, makes peace with Kei Lo, and protects her family to the best of her ability. She keeps a cool head and is able to compartmentalize. But she cares. She has all along, and now we finally get to see her express it. I hate when people say she has no character development, if anything I’d say she’s growing into a foil for Katara (I’m dying to see those two interact). I honestly cannot wait for the rest of these comics.

TG was a tragedy. TG:re, on the other hand, is a fucked up joke.

ladymoonstache:

Chapter 47 ends with this sentence: “This world is a fucked up joke.” And after thinking about it for a while, I realize that TG:re really is a fucked up joke.

  • In TG, Takizawa wanted to be strong and to be number one. In TG:re, Takizawa finally got the power he desired but the joke is that he still ISN’T number one, being second
    best to Kaneki.
  • In TG, Hinami escaped from the CCG after her family was exterminated and successfully hid for over three years. However, in TG:re, the CCG caught her and the funny part is that she could’ve avoided the situation but went to save Sasaki on her own will.
  • In TG, Tsukiyama confidently stated that he has “no memories of ever beening broken”. But… in TG:re, not only is he THE MOST broken of them all but his tragedy is on par with Kaneki’s.
  • In TG, Akira was one of the people that hated ghouls the most. However, in :re, all of her loved ones – Amon, Takizawa, Sasaki –  are… half-ghoul.
  • In TG, Naki almost died saving Gagi and Guge. In :re, Gagi and Guge died for Naki.
  • In TG, Kaneki had one goal – protect his loved ones. However, now in TG:re, not only does he not remember his loved ones but he also has taken part in the imprisonment of Hinami, the destruction of Tsukiyama’s family and attacked Nishiki.

littlemissymonster:

Ishida drew a trading card for Seidou’s birthday, and there is one note on the card no one seems to have brought this part up yet so I think I will.

Seidou’s stats drop around Akira. Which is interesting and means her reaction to her in Chapter 31 probably wasn’t random.

He is either honestly bothered or disarmed by Akira. He probably either he doesn’t want to harm her, feels inferior so he hesitates before her, or he can just never beat her.

His stats drop by Houji too, so maybe he feels shame in front of them.

Why do you ship shizuona?

heiwajimashizuo:

  • because they are both very good for each other’s development
  • because shizuo considers her his precious friend
  • because vorona realizes that she feels something for shizuo that she can’t explain
  • because when she thinks of how happy she has been beside shizuo narita spends nearly a whole chapter talking about how Vorona doesn’t understand love even if it was looking her right in the face.
  • because he is the violence incarnate and she is the violence addict
  • because Shizuo doesn’t care about Vorona’s past, he only cares about what she wants for her future
  • because unlike every other single character in Durarara including Celty Vorona NEVER thinks of Shizuo as a monster. She has always firmly believed in the humanity of his soul.
  • because she, a monster who has already been stained with the blood of others, would rather kill Izaya herself to save Shizuo from becoming a monster stained in blood like her.
  • because the fact that she thinks of herself as a monster worries Shizuo.
  • because it is thanks to vorona that Shizuo is still ‘human’
  • because even when they are ‘enemies’ Vorona still injures herself to save him
  • because it was the fact that Izaya was using Vorona that made Shizuo finally and completely snap in his rage.
  • because they both like sweets
  • because when he’s with them tom always feels like a third wheel
  • because she completed his kouhai-senpai hierarchy without his even asking.
  • because it is through her interactions with Shizuo that Vorona gains the courage to face her past/father.
  • because Shizuo never got to thank her before she left
  • because they promised to see each other again so Vorona can have her fight.
  • because she has to stand on her tippy toes to kiss him.
  • because they are two very imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other
  • because when he finds out Izaya’s alive Shizuo is relieved to learn that vorona didn’t become a murderer for his sake.
  • because neither of them understand love but  together they can learn to figure it out
  • because he’s someone who has alot of love to give and she’s someone who has never experienced it before.
  • because they both think the other is the epitome of strength and get confused over the fact that the other feels that way
  • because Vorona spent all these novels trying to figure out what shizuo’s weakness was only to become part of his weakness
  • because there is a ‘good thing’ going on between them
  • because he likes hearing her opinions on things and when he asks her questions he is genuinely curious
  • because they both suffer from self worth and depression problems but together work through them
  • because he’s in japan and she’s in russia but that red string will bring them back together IT BETTER BRING THEM BACK TOGETHER

For more coherent rambles on why I like them there’s this post that talks about shizuo’s feelings for vorona, this post talks about how Vorona saved Shizuo at the end of Novel 13, and this post talks about every canon interaction they have sans the untranslated volumes 11 and 12.
