Maybe I’m in denial, but I don’t believe we’ve seen the last of Weston’s maestro, also known as Cheslock, but I just thought of a purpose to his existence in this arc. A way to make himself in any way relevant to the plot, for either good or ill.
Cheslock, as we know, is a musical genius. The boy can play any instrument his hands touch perfectly.
(Chap. 77)
And now we know from Chap. 112, that the P4 and Bravat’s method of spreading their dogma to the masses is through song.
Though we never saw any musicians present on or offstage while the P4 were doing their happy boy band number, I think it’s safe to assume that there was some musical accompaniment somewhere. Perhaps Cheslock was one of them, and will come into the picture later as one of the P4′s/Bravat’s henchmen (please Lord no).
Or, on a more positive note, this may be Cheslock’s cue to give a helping hand to Ciel and co. We know that, somehow, Cheslock opened the door leading out of the Weston chapel to the Midnight Tea Party garden here(Chap. 81). The doorway was literally through a giant organ. At this stage, Cheslock was a cog in the machine, helping things along without a word, because he had no idea that anything was wrong with the proceedings or with his superiors.
Now he knows better. Could his music be a means of disruption, to counter the song the P4 sing in ‘carol time’ at the Hall? Could he, sneaking into the Hall come next Saturday evening, play an instrument in such a way as to break the spell, so to speak, that the P4′s song put the audience under? Cheslock’s music would not be the happy-go-lucky boy-band fare, I’m sure. It may well put a spanner in the works, and serve as a distraction while Ciel and Edward search for Lizzie, or something more. It’s difficult to say.
Certainly music is another way of getting across a particular emotion, feeling or mood, as song does. Could Cheslock use music to convey feelings that somehow jeopardise the effects of the P4′s song? Perhaps Cheslock’s music could convey the reality of the feelings troubling the audience, the troubles they want to forget? Certainly both Cheslock and Edward are more than familiar of such feelings of turmoil, after all they’ve been put through. Greenhill even directly asked Edward if he was ‘worried’, or better put ‘troubled’ (Chap 109, p.6), what with all his new responsibilities and the pressure he faces, and Edward’s expression confirms this is true.
Would Ciel ask Edward to approach Cheslock, or everybody go along to ask for his help?
Would Cheslock and Edward team up, as they are shown in this sketch by Yana?
From this, we see Edward knows how to play guitar, and he and Cheslock get along much better than their occasional bickering indicates. Perhaps they could team up to put their musical talent against the P4′s singing act?
what i mean when i call a character perfect is “wow look at how flawed you are, how broken and three dimensional and well written. look how much of a disaster you are and how you are constantly torn between right and wrong and you make so many mistakes along the way wow look how human you are”
so basically when i say they are perfect what i mean is thank god they aren’t
My thirst for a Rabbit/Mado/Fueguchi arc parallel in :re is unquenchable. There’s just so many interesting plot points and loose ends that could tie into it:
A conclusion to Hinami’s imprisonment at Cochlea now that her extermination has been set into motion (of course with her escaping and being completely unharmed)
A Mado/Rabbit showdown, whether that be with Touka and/or Ayato (Kirishima sibling tag team, Ishida please) as the Rabbit counterpart
A chance for Akira to get closure on her Father’s death by confronting Rabbit
Getting to see Hinami’s amazing dual kagune again
At the Auction, Akira and Hinami narrowly missed each other. But we did see Hinami’s reaction to hearing of the ‘spine user’ showing up:
Hinami clearly still hasn’t been able to move on from her parent’s death. Encountering Akira’s quinque made out of Papa Fueguchi could lead to some positive character development for Hinami in this respect
And remember who else had a confrontation in the Rabbit arc?
If anyone can change Kaneki’s perspective on the world and put him on the right path, it will be Amon. Floppy incoming?
If both Floppy wearing the Arata armour and the Kirishima’s are present, there’s the chance they could find out the fate of their Father being turned into a quinque
Amon never got closure on Mado’s death either and blamed himself for not being there. It’s likely he still holds a grudge against Rabbit and would like a chance to make amends for not being able to save Mado the first time around
The parallels in :re never work out quite so perfectly but I’m just hoping at least some of these elements are addressed in the upcoming arc!
Some things from Kimi’s chapter in the third novel:
– Kimi’s name (貴未) is made up of the first characters of her father’s name (貴志, Takashi) and her mother’s name (未恵, Mie).
– She’s invited to a family trip with her parents and her little brother for the weekend, but they’re very understanding when she has to pass in favour of a paper she has to write for school. She‘s aiming to become a doctor and has been taking her studies very seriously. Kimi feels a little regretful, but resolves to spend time with her family when she’s free again.
– That weekend, her brother sends her a photograph of their trip and wishes she could’ve come too. Kimi wishes them well and to drive safely. However, later that day, she receives the news that her family was involved in a collision with a truck. She rushes to the hospital as fast as she can. The doctor tells her that her parents died instantly and her brother passed away on the way to the hospital. While the bodies of her parents are covered in horrific injuries, her brother merely looks like he’s sleeping. Yet no matter how much she shakes him, he doesn’t wake up.
– After the funeral, Kimi immediately forces herself to return to school despite the protests of her relatives. She has to do what she told her family she’d do: focus on her studies. However, her first day back passes by in a complete blur and she’s unable to concentrate. She can’t sleep and has no appetite. She’s memorized her last messages with her brother and wishes she’d died with them. She questions the point of becoming a doctor when she has already failed the people she most wanted to save.
– In her first meeting with Nishiki, she’s surprised by his smile. Everyone she has talked to recently have all treated her very carefully. She’s shocked when he asks to exchange phone numbers, certain that he’s making fun of her. That evening though, he sends her a text asking how her day was. Upon discovering that she’s studying medicine, Nishiki reveals that he’s in pharmacy and remarks that they might share lectures. Kimi finds she feels better talking with someone who doesn’t know about her situation or feel pity for her. They text for a long time and agree to study together the next day. Kimi sleeps soundly that night for the first time.
– The next day, Kimi arrives at their meeting place and is surprised to see Nishiki waiting for her. She hadn’t been sure that he would come. Their study session passes by not unpleasantly and they agree to see each other again. Their study sessions become a regular occurrence and then into simple invitations for walks. He loses his cautious expression and she loses her shyness with him. She finds herself looking forward to tomorrows again.
– One day, she overhears her old friends wondering why someone as popular as Nishiki would go for someone as plain as Kimi. They make jabs at how she seems to have completely recovered even though she seemed so devastated after the accident. At least she didn’t commit suicide, which would be awful for the reputation of their school. As they pass by, Kimi wonders to herself why Nishiki is with her as well.
– After, she bumps into Nishiki, who invites her to his place. She agrees and they pick up some food along the way. Kimi loves to try new food, but she notices that Nishiki doesn’t seem to hold any interest in food, often keeping food past its expiry date, which causes her to worry about his health. She feels comfortable with Nishiki, perhaps because he seems aware of her boundaries. He never asks about her family and never talks about his own. She wonders if it’s because he has felt a similar pain in his life.
– She wonders if her family could’ve lived if she went with them on that trip. If they’d came to pick her up, the route and timing would’ve been different. Even if it’s only a possibility, she can’t ever forgive herself. Her thoughts are suddenly interrupted by Nishiki, who remarks that she has a very good name. ‘Precious future.’ It’s the name she received from her mother and father. Until now, she could only recall the way they looked in the morgue. Now, the images of her parents and brother, smiling and encouraging her, flood her mind and she starts to cry, her guilt and torment finally leaving her with her tears.
Niccolo was a historian, politician, diplomat, philosopher, writer, and most notably, a humanist
Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively, and generally prefers critical thinking and evidence (rationalism, empiricism) over unthinking acceptance of dogma or superstition.
He wrote comedies, carnival songs, and poetry.
He is the guy behind a negative term called "Machiavellianism“
definition: the employment of cunning and duplicity in statecraft or in general conduct. It’s characterized by a duplicitous interpersonal style, a cynical disregard for morality and a focus on self-interest and personal gain (very clownish)
Machiavelli described immoral behavior, such as dishonesty and killing innocents, as being normal and effective in politics. He even seemed to endorse it in some situations.
The book The Prince gained notoriety when some readers claimed that the author was teaching evil, and providing “evil recommendations to tyrants to help them maintain their power.” (this could be referring to some higher up function on the Clowns agenda)
Known as the “root of France’s present degradation, which has culminated not only in the St Bartholemew massacre but the glee of its perverted admirers.“
Because this guy was so nasty in his thinking, he got exiled, but the thing is is that this guy would try and live through other people
“Decently dressed, I enter the ancient courts of rulers who have long since died. There, I am warmly welcomed, and I feed on the only food I find nourishing and was born to savor. I am not ashamed to talk to them and ask them to explain their actions and they, out of kindness, answer me. Four hours go by without my feeling any anxiety. I forget every worry. I am no longer afraid of poverty or frightened of death. I live entirely through them” which reminds me of how Nico loves to live and be by “beautiful people”, like Kaneki
I mentioned this above, but the book The Prince was basically the understanding that “to retain power, the hereditary prince must carefully balance the interests of a variety of institutions to which the people are accustomed.”
Variety of institutions: V, CCG, Ghouls, Clowns, Humans
Prince: possibly Haiseneki
The Catholic church banned this book which is interesting with all the Catholic motifs in TG so far (especially since Catholicism is associated with Amon, Eto, and Haiseneki quite often).
People ended up calling this book satire (Fucked up-comedy or Clowns)
Thanks for mentioning this! I’d say Nico is definitely based off this guy
Hi pinup, I’m sorry for the late reply! I’ve really thought a lot about this ‘spider’s thread’-thing in the past two days, but unfortunately I haven’t come to any conclusion yet! X( The only thing I noticed while rereading Kuroshitsuji is, that Ciel’s line in ch19 is probably supposed to be something like an antithesis (?) to Sebastian’s line in ch12:
“Humans [are weak and] cannot reject temptation. If they are pushed into an abyss of despair likened to hell and if a spider’s thread that helps them escape from there shows up, they certainly can’t help but grab it.” (Sebastian, ch12, my shitty literal translation)
And for comparison, here’s what Ciel said in ch19:
“Even if we are put in an abyss of depair likened to hell,
if there’s [a hope as thin as] a spider’s thread that allows us to climb
out of there, we will grab it and won’t give up. We humans have that strength.” (Ciel, ch19)
Yana often mentioned that Ciel and Sebastian’s realtionship are like ‘two parallel lines that never cross’ and it seems that their way of thinking is completely contrary too: Ciel regards the act of grabbing the spider’s thread in a desparate situation as ‘strength’ of human beings, whereas Sebastian, as a demon himself, interprets it as ‘weakness’.
Gosh, I’m totally off the point, aren’t I? _(:3」∠)_ I’m sorry, I think I couldn’t really respond to your point (´・ω・`)
Hello! I guess this is a bit similar to the “Grelle’s gender”-discussion, i.e. something that is often discussed in the Western fandom but is rarely (if not never) questioned in the Japanese fandom. Marriage between cousins are legal but rare in Japan, most people would probably avoid it, so our perception isn’t different from that of the Western countries. However, it might seem ‘strange’ to us in the 21st century, but back then in the 19th century it wasn’t that uncommon. A well-known example for a cousin-couple is Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (If you are interested, I recommend the Austrian romantic comedy movie “Victoria in Dover (Mädchenjahre einer Königin)” starring adorable ♡Romy Schneider♡, it’s really cute!!). So considering the era and the circumstances, I don’t think it’s ‘strange’ that Ciel and Lizzy are cousins and fiances. Kuroshitsuji is a manga that is set in Victorian England (AU) after all.
Anyway, generally speaking Japanese people are quite tolerant and indifferent (in a good way as well as in a bad way) when it comes to mangas, animes – everything fictional -, so most people aren’t bothered by (fictional) cousin-couples. Also, I’ve never seen anyone in the Japanese fandom complaining about Sebastian and Ciel’s supposedly “unhealthy”(?) relationship either. I think Western fans are far more sensitive to this kind of things than Japanese fans and that’s why I’m always shocked when I see those heated discussions on tumblr or bb.net about things that I’ve never really regarded as ‘controversial’! D:
So, Haise is being beaten by Kanae and Kaneki appears to taunt him. Haise is angry and attacks him, and there’s a blur of thoughts “die, kill, I should have died that day”. And then Kaneki seems to say, “you remember don’t you?”
He remembers the scene with his mother, and he remembers wanting to die against Arima. And he remembers that Kaneki’s salvation was sleep.
And then Kaneki says that this time he wants to do something big, good or bad, to get people to love him, and then die in a cool way. That’s his salvation now, and Sasaki says he thinks he can manage it.
Before, I thought this mean Kaneki died in Sasaki’s head, but now I’m not so sure (the spoilers were also out of order and it looked like Sasaki killed him, but we see in the chapter that’s not the case.)
I still don’t think Kaneki has “woken up” or “taken over” or whatever. I don’t think Kaneki’s “back” at the end of the chapter. I still think that’s Sasaki asserting himself. Only unlike the last time he was in this situation against Seidou in the auction, this isn’t a passive “it’s okay if I disappear” decision that he’s making for other people’s sake. This is an active rejection of his and Kaneki’s mentality of wanting to die. He’s got a new salvation and it involves staying alive, not allowing himself to be injured and not sleeping/dying.
I’m much more optimistic about his future now that we see he didn’t kill Kaneki. I think he’s changing the way he views Kaneki as something to fear or something that will erase him, and instead as a part of himself. He talks to Kaneki as if they’re the same person, which they are. So. I hope that him choosing to stay alive and him feeling less like he and Kaneki are two different people is something that can help him reconcile himself soon. I don’t think it’ll happen during this fight though.
You couldn’t be more wrong kaneki is back and the dialogue goodnight haise I’m done with dreaming means now haise is the one locked away dreaming and the kaneki persona has risen and taken over…. It’s pretty clear
Sasaki and Kaneki are the same person.
He’s done with “dreaming” and pretending like he’s happy in his life as Haise, and he’s done with locking away all of his memories. He’s done separating himself from his past.
He’s not the old Kaneki anymore and remembering won’t make him that Kaneki again. But he is and always has been Kaneki, just pretending to be be a different person and creating another persona in his head to keep his memories separated so he can keep acting like he’s a different person from who he used to be. But in this chapter he admitted they’re the same person.
Akira and Seidou would be the couple that always fight and argue over something, mostly because Seidou doesn’t like losing but he keeps on losing without Akira even trying.
Imagine they play video games or playing card games and Seidou keeps on losing the game so, Akira purposely let him win afterwards and Seidou was really pissed that he feel like he’s useless to the point that Akira have to give up her win for him and start arguing with her although Akira just being nice.
In the end, he just abandoned the game and sulk for a whole week, avoiding talking to Akira although he doesn’t really like being away from her. Akira finds it rather amusing and walk over to him, leaning her body against his until he scream out for her to get off his back. Before he could turn around and yell, Akira gently cup his face and peck his cheek leaving him speechless.
“Losing or winning, it doesn’t matter.”
He pout and look away, with the red blush spread across his cheek, “I know..”
They end up cuddling on the couch and Seidou tried to braid her hair but failed miserably.
He wasn’t just some guy going around licking her photos and trying to kidnap her. He never even actually confronted her face to face. If he had then yeah she probably could have stood her ground against him. But Adabashi KNEW she was hollywood and wasn’t about to let himself get caught.
And besides that, he wasn’t just stalking her, he was mentally and emotionally torturing her from a distance.
Not only did he manage to break into her house but he even changed the locks so that she couldn’t get inside of it.
Camera’s only caught a masked man.
He made replica’s of all the monster’s she’s ever played in a movie and left them piled together as blood-stained cruentation crosses at her house. He then took a picture of the crime scene and posted it all over the internet.
He sent incriminating blackmail of her to her new work place.
He takes photo’s of her in private situations where he shouldn’t be near her and sends them to her.
He threatened everyone around her.
AND there are probably tons more things that he’s done but Ruri didn’t want to share all the details of this guys stalking with Shizuo.
No one, not even Ruri, can take the fear and the anxiety he was inflicting upon her. It was brave of her to even really confide in Kasuka and it took ALOT for her to be completely truthful with him.
She might be half a monster but she’s also still half human and I don’t know ANYONE who could take going through what she did.
