Hi! A thing I thought about Reiner and Eren’s parallelism: right now both of them have realized the dream they both have had for the majority of the series, only to discover that dream wasn’t as catartic and as definitive as they thought it would have been. Eren reached the ocean and Reiner went back home (the last chapter was all about the Eldians going back home), but this doesn’t mean freedom or happiness.

Hello 🙂 And yes, I couldn’t agree more, I even reblogged a detailed post on the subject that I strongly advise you to read if you haven’t because it’s incredibly well written!

About freedom and happiness though… Did I ever mention that I just can’t imagine (for the moment) any possibly happy endings for SnK? It’s one of the first time for me that the ending of a series seems so gloom, even though we haven’t gotten every answer yet.

So, you’re definitely right, I absolutely loved the parallels between Reiner and Eren, especially when Eren always looked up to Reiner so much, but the happiness of the realization that they’re both finally aware of what the world truly is like only ended up tasting bitter at the end of the chapter, because even if they somehow find an ally in each other, I have no idea how this story can even end with a slight touch of positivity.

This post says it better than I ever will, anyway. I loved the flashback, I loved realizing how similar Eren and Reiner are but it’s just incredibly sad how this keeps on being depressing because neither can even imagine a way to ever be free.

Anyway, Anon, thanks for your thoughts! I hope you’ll have a nice day/evening. 🙂

Chapter 94 Thoughts

etoincognito:

The anticipation for this chapter was really something else. I don’t think I’ve seen people so antsy for spoilers in a while. I’m guessing that was a mix of the previous chapter being out so early, the fact that this chapter is the volume closer, and the eagerness to see even a glimpse of the main cast again after a few months without them – depending on your preferences of course.

(They did not make an official appearance)

This chapter is odd for me, because the content itself is great and makes for a meta-writing goldmine, but despite how eager I was to get the chapter I didn’t even read through the whole thing until the official release date. Like I wasn’t in a rush to get translations by the time the scanned pages were out.

Apparently there’s a page citing this all as Marley’s arc, not volume, which makes me think we might not actually be returning to Paradis anytime soon. Couple that with an interview with Isayama scheduled for release next month regarding the direction the story will be taking, that possibility sounds even more likely to me.

It’s a bold move if true, I’ll say that much.

If there was one thing in particular I wanted from these Marleyan-focused chapters, it was the warrior trio’s backstory. My wish was granted.

Reiner, Eren…turns out you two have more in common than you care to admit.

Good day ^_^ about snk ch 94 do you think the guy with crutches is Eren? What is the Japanese fans opinions on the latest chapter? If its Eren he separated himself from the survey corps? Isayama said the EMA will separate, could the separation happen after 3-4 years has passed after the retake of wall maria ?Sorry for the wall of text and thanks in advance♡♡♡.

Hi!

From what I read from 2ch and twitter, reactions of Japanese fans are quite similar to those from the western fandom. Warriors flashback really brings people life, and Isayama’s depiction of the dehumanizing aspect of the war is unbelievably incisive. (They haven’t found out Isayama’s meme trash. HA!) About the amputee guy, most people guess he is Eren, but then they feel it would be stupid move for him to enter Marley by himself. And, for what?

Hmm I think he is Eren as well. This guy has been shown in two chapters consecutively without his identity revealed. He must be a key figure whom readers know well about. Levi and Connie are too short to be him, and Jean can’t lose his leg (Please don’t, Isayama). As for now, Eren seems like the most possible answer. But I hold the same questions as many meta writers on Tumblr do. How does Eren arrive in Marley? What’s his plan? Is he alone? What is Survey Corps doing with him? Isayama owes us answers!

About the shiganshina separation, my translation is “With different ways of thinking, the three characters will go into different directions. The result of that, as part of my conception, is that they will sort of oppose each other.” Isayama was very careful with his wording here. First of all, their “separation/opposition” is a “result of their different ways of thinking.” He also said Mikasa’s separation from Eren means she can return to a ordinary little girl. Second, “対立するような展開は構想にあります” – “part of my conception is that they will sort of oppose each other.” “よう”means “seems like/sort of/similar to”. So the separation can take many forms, maybe not like a complete break-up with friends, but maybe more like a subtle and gradual mental process while they are still staying together.

If Isayama doesn’t change his mind and sticks to his original plan to draw shiganshina separation, I feel he should dedicate at least an entire chapter or even a whole arc to it. From his interview he expressed that Mikasa being stuck between Eren and Armin will be a big thing. It will definitely be a climax of the story, perhaps the last one. (And the readers all die because of angst feelings.) It shouldn’t happen in flashback, otherwise Isayama is wasting such a powerful plot devise… So, I think it will happen in later chapters, not during the past four-year time skip.

This series is always giving us so much to look forward to, isn’t it?

a friend of mine after she read the chapter thinks Reiner will end up changing side because he changed his mind about the walled world. What do you think?

It’s completely absurd to think he will change sides because he realized none of the Eldians were devils with pointy ears and horns on the head. That modified his views but his attempts to describe them as subhuman when he clearly knows them on a personal level, sounded more like a pretense to show he hasn’t changed his ways. If he ever doubt about the Marlean portrayal, his family can cast suspicions on him.

At best most of them left him confused. But no way he’s going to change sides and drop his family for a bunch of guys who hold Annie hostage, killed Bertolt, blew his head off, gave him Ackertrauma and almost send his head flying off.

I think people are majoring confusing what these chapters have been all about.

Reiner is the surviving child soldier in a failed operation the Marleyan government carried out to secure control over the last of the Eldian race.  As a child, all Reiner could think about was because the perfect Marleyan soldier so his family could be together.  As an adult he is looking past that and noticing how fucked up everything is, and that all that loyalty has stripped him of almost everything he’s every loved. He’s tired, he’s severly depressed, he has major PTSD, and he’s having to chose which brainwashed kid will end his life.

The point of Reiner feeling like an absolute trainwreck isn’t because he wants to side with Paradise Island. It’s because he’s in a unique position to understand how absolutely horrifying and disturbing the war has been.  He’s trying to use the last of his agency as a celebrated warrior to die the way he wants, that’s it. There would be no joy nor validation for him to randomly chance sides with Eldians, all he would be doing is betraying all the people he left behind (Annie, Bertolt, Marcel, his own damn mother!).

These chapters haven’t been about Reiner realizing he’s on the wrong side of the war, its about him realizing there are no good sides at all.

I love Reiner’s description about why the 104th are devils.

“This one girl STOLE A POTATO! And she offered half to the instructor but it was such a SMALL POTATO!”

“This other dude was so forgetful omg”

“And then this one guy just talked about himself all the time like gdi”

“But WAIT! There was also a guy who CARED WAY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE OTHERS! HOW DARE!?”

“And this last dude was fueled by vengeance and had weird friends who followed him around everywhere you won’t even believe. It was sO HORRIBLE.”

Reiner… are you buying what you’re selling? lol

Why is Eren in Marley? (Theory)

I said that I wasn’t going to make a meta about the identity of the mysterious guy™, because I do believe it’s Eren, but I will talk a little bit about why Eren is in Marley, or at least, my theory about what could be the case. It’s going to be a bit far-fetched because I don’t have a lot of things to back this up entirely. The general idea is the point I’m trying to make, and not specifically the event that I’m about to mention, so keep that in mind.

Also for the record, since we don’t have an official translation yet, I will be using a fan one, here.
