Hey Anon 🙂 and wow, what a question to ask honestly and on top of that I’m not sure of how to answer it because we don’t necessarily have the same definition of “shipping”.
Because I have, like, tons of crack ships that are in general not so serious and mainly for the lulz and, on the other hand, I have only a few “real” ships by series (and by that I mean that those real ships actually could become canon from the way I see things). So, since I had this talk before and some people consider that crack ships are actually not truly “shipping”… it really depends on what definition you have 🙂
Back to your question, if you’re wondering whether I ship Edward and Lizzie seriously then the answer is no. If you’re wondering if that’s a crack ship on the other hand, then the answer is definitely yes.
And if you’re wondering why I do have Ed/Liz, even though that’s complete incest, as a crack ship that I am quite fond of (like all my other crack ships) then the answer would be because Ed is the biggest siscon I’ve ever read about. Yeaaaah, because Yana-sensei sure loooooves her comic relief (the new chapter is basically Ed becoming the equivalent of a Chippendale for the time era just to bring Lizzie back), and on my end I just find it hella fun to imagine what if the siscon thing had in fact a much darker side not brought to light yet
(since Ed is a Phantomhive as much as Ciel is and there is this crack theory that they’re actually a cursed family)
?
So basically Anon, you can call that a crack ship, a crack theory, a mix of the two, honestly it’s up to you but it’s all Edward’s fault in the first place if you end up calling me a shipper 😉 I just am enjoying torturing this poor boy with the possibility (hence all the jokes since last month [x]
If you wish to take part in any fandom, you need to accept and respect these three laws.
If you aren’t able to do that, then you need to realise that your actions are making fandom unsafe for creators. That you are stifling creativity.
Like vaccination, fandom only works if everyone respects these rules. Creators need to be free to make their fanart, fanfics and all other content without fear of being harassed or concern-trolled for their creative choices, no matter whether you happen to like that content or not.
The First Law of Fandom
Don’t Like; Don’t Read (DL;DR)
It is up to you what you see online. It is not anyone else’s place to tell you what you should or should not consume in terms of content; it is not up to anyone else to police the internet so that you do not see things you do not like. At the same time, it is not up to YOU to police fandom to protect yourself or anyone else, real or hypothetical.
There are tools out there to help protect you if you have triggers or squicks. Learn to use them, and to take care of your own mental health. If you are consuming fan-made content and you find that you are disliking it – STOP.
The Second Law of Fandom
Your Kink Is Not My Kink (YKINMK)
Simply put, this means that everyone likes different things. It’s not up to you to determine what creators are allowed to create. It’s not up to you to police fandom.
If you don’t like something, you can post meta about it or create contrarian content yourself, seek to convert other fans to your way of thinking.
But you have no right to say to any creator “I do not like this, therefore you should not create it. Nobody should like this. It should not exist.”
It’s not up to you to decide what other people are allowed to like or not like, to create or not to create. That’s censorship. Don’t do it.
The Third Law of Fandom
Ship And Let Ship (SALS)
Much (though not all) fandom is about shipping. There are as many possible ships as there are fans, maybe more. You may have an OTP (One True Pairing), you may have a NOTP, that pairing that makes you want to barf at the very thought of its existence.
It’s not up to you to police ships or to determine what other people are allowed to ship. Just because you find that one particular ship problematic or disgusting, does not mean that other people are not allowed to explore its possibilities in their fanworks.
You are free to create contrarian content, to write meta about why a particular ship is repulsive, to discuss it endlessly on your private blog with like-minded persons.
It is not appropriate to harass creators about their ships, it is not appropriate to demand they do not create any more fanworks about those ships, or that they create fanwork only in a manner that you deem appropriate.
These three laws add up to the following:
You are not paying for fanworks content, and you have no rights to it other than to choose to consume it, or not consume it. If you do choose to consume it, do not then attack the creator if it wasn’t to your taste. That’s the height of bad manners.
Be courteous in fandom. It makes the whole experience better for all of us.
Yup.
Slaps onto blog.
Basically this.
I may add: “Thou shalt no question why others ship whatever they ship”
me looking for fanfic of a common pairing: it gotta be 20k+, finished, set in Estonia in 1999, T-rated, cooking show AND fake marriage au, no character death, everyone is a genderfluid panromantic ace, at least three cats and seven penguins are involved
me looking for rare pair fanfic: HOLY SHIT IT’S IN ENGLISH *immediately starts reading without even checking the summary*
With some characters I’m like:Hell, yeah, I’ll multiship the hell out of you with anyone who’s good enough for you and love all these ships like babies and be overwhelmed by so many feels!
but with some characters I’m totally like:You have ONE soulmate and ONE ONLY and ONLY THEY ARE GOOD FOR YOU and no one else is ever going to deserve you and make you happy and any other ship is a big big NOTP, because JUST NO.
what makes you so sure that Square Enix was the only magazine company she was considering at the time.
I recommend you to read the manga “Kuroshitsuji down stairs vol.1” at the end of the comic book vol.1, it will probably clarify some of your questions! =D Or if you don’t own the comic book, here’s a summary by @hateweasel. Kuroshitsuji is a story which emerged in the course of the conversation between Yana and editor K about her next work on GFantasy after her debut manga “Rust Blaster”. So it’s quite clear that she was willing to continue working for Square Enix/GFantasy 😀
whose to say that Yana didn’t keep such a secret for herself
If it were a secret Yana kept for herself, how come someone states with certainty that “Kuroshitsuji was supposed to be a hardcore yaoi manga but the company forced Yana to change it”? D: Where did the OP get this information from when Yana never clearly stated anything about it? Where is the source that led them to this conclusion? (´・ω・`)
Unless Yana outright says something about it, we will never know.
Well, if we didn’t have to take things like SquareEnix’s policies or the afore-mentioned “Kuroshitsuji downstairs mangas” into consideration, we could actually make up any random crack statements, like “Kuroshitsuji was supposed to be a shojo manga with Ciel and Lizzy as main characers but Yana was forced to change that” or “Kuroshitsuji was supposed to be a cricket manga and actually Greenhill was supposed to be the main character instead of Sebastian but blah blah blah” etc, couldn’t we? (≧▽≦) You know, there’s no need to back up these statements with proof, sources or facts, it’s not necessarily misinformation since we don’t know for sure until Yana outright says “That’s not true!” XD …..
………………………………….. I hope you agree with me that this kind of argumentation doesn’t really sound convincing… (´・ω・`)
Anyway, if you still have quetions about this topic (though honestly speaking, I have nothing to say other than what I’ve already said), please come off-anon so that we can discuss it privately 😀
Sorry but I got a lot of Anons on Sunday and I don’t want to bury people’s dashes (or the tags) so I hope the Anons don’t mind if I put all the answers in the same post so I can answer everyone at the same time :3 I rarely ever do that, so please don’t feel offended :3
Hey Anon 🙂 Ah well, in the first place your definition of shipping and mine might not be exactly the same but it doesn’t matter because in Ciel’s case the answer is easy anyway.
If you’re asking who I romantically ship Ciel with in what’s currently happening in the manga, the answer is no one (I don’t think he has the emotional capacity to feel attracted by anyone for the moment because he’s young and he went through a lot). If you’re asking about who I (romantically) ship him/see him considering future developments, the answer is Elizabeth, so basically you could say I am rooting for Ciel/Lizzie when it comes to romance in Kuro.
As for the best platonic ship, it is with Sebastian 🙂
Hope it answers your question, have a nice day! ^_^
Hey Anon ^_^ And lol, I think even if Vincent’s body was awfully burnt he still was put in a coffin before being buried properly, but maybe not one of the specially made though, so maybe that’s why UT’s always proposing the same thing to Ciel.
The guy loves running jokes, haha!
(Have a nice day Anon :3)
Hello Anon! Ah, well I’m sorry I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking?
If you’re looking for a post explaining what the 2CT is about with a list of all the hints, it won’t be on this blog. I had a link towards a master post but the forums it was on closed so all I have now are posts when I personally talk/answer about the 2CT and I’m not particularly in favor of it, neither is it ever a full explanation of the theory.
If you’re just looking for a post in particular discussing the 2CT that you know is on this blog however, feel free to check the 2CT tag on my blog. 🙂
If this doesn’t answer your question, please send a slightly more specific ask about the post you’re looking for :3
Have a nice day! 🙂
Hello 🙂 And aww, thank you so very much for the kind words ❤ but please, I’m nobody’s senpai, just a regular fan who is a bit too talkative, haha. 🙂
As for your question, um, I know people really love Sebby and think he’s the hottest guy but maaaaan, I agree with you, for me it’s definitely UT! He’s just totally my kind of fictional characters: grey/silver/white hair + gorgeous face + creepy vibes LOL
I don’t know if I’d want him at my funerals though, but I do like the fact that people seem to find Seb more attractive, that way we who prefer UT can have him for ourselves! ^^
Thank you again for the very nice words, Anon :3 and for passing by my blog! I hope you’ll have a nice day! 🙂
Hey Anon 🙂
Indeed, Book of Circus showed Vincent having brown eyes but it’s not the color they have on Yana’s official arts, so I’m personally choosing her colorful art as the reference for his eye color (canon = the original work by the original author). His eyes aren’t exactly black either though 😉
…They seem to be some kind of light blue-grey color. Well, I guess it’s up to everyone’s eyes anyway, but that above is what the color is according to Yana and so his eyes are certainly not brown!
I hope it answers your question, Anon 🙂 Have a nice day!
Hey Anon 🙂
Ah, I completely agree with you, actually these have been my thoughts for a month or two now
To be more accurate, I think someone (UT) told Bravat about all these…details and that’s precisely what he or that person conveyed to her which could be why we have that cliffhanger of ch116. 🙂
Great thinking and thank you for sharing your thoughts!
People have been writing “problematic” relationships since before Jesus learned to wipe his own ass.
So much of renaissance literature focuses on creepy incest pairings, fucked up assholes trying to claim a young girl’s virginity, women exchanging sexual favors for agency. One notable example: when John Ford published ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, the literature world reacted as though the play would tear the very moral fibers of society apart. He was, quite literally, called the trash man, and it was decided that the play would bring about the end of decent society.
Guess wat.
It didn’t.
The world went on. Literally no one walked away after reading Ford’s play and thought, “Well, that’s that. Better go impregnate my sister and kill anyone who gets in our way.” However, people did come away from the play wondering if society was too harsh in its condemnations of what makes a villain. It left people DISCOURSING, if we will, on the merits and levels of evil.
These themes are nothing new. They are not going to absurdly and suddenly “normalize” anything, because they never have. And, even better for our time than in Ford’s, as a society, we have become much more aware of how important it is to teach people about consent, about autonomy and agency, about safety. And it’s important that we keep teaching those lessons. But this does not mean we shun literature that explores anything negative. This does not mean we stop writing dynamics that explore Bad Things™ because, as history shows, it. won’t. destroy. society.
If you don’t enjoy a thing, then don’t read it. Don’t interact with it. Ignore it. If you are disgusted by a thing, don’t engage with it. If it makes you sick, or ill, or makes you clutch your pearls in alarm, do not read the thing. NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO. And above all else, don’t you dare get on a high horse and try to gain some moral high ground by shaming the people who do read, write, and engage with such dynamics because
Guess wat.
It only encourages them to do it more.
Someone told Shakespeare that his penis puns were too bawdy.
So he went out of his way to add more.
Literature has always contained content that people did not like. There are always going to be ways to critique a work in a valid and rational way. Criticizing those who enjoy those works, and calling them “awful?” Not valid. Not rational. Not helpful. Not smart.
Q: Should I harass or bully someone over who/what they ship?
A: No.
Q: But they ship the wrong ship!
A: Still no.
Q: Their ship will never be canon! It’s so obvious to anyone
reading/watching/playing.
A: I don’t care. The answer is still no.
Q: My ship is canon, and they ship one of the couple with
someone else! It’s like cheating! How about now?
A: Nope, not now either.
Q: The ship they ship is unhealthy/abusive/incestuous/icky.
I should definitely harass them about that.
A: It’s like you’re not even listening to me. No, no you
should not.
Q: But if they ship this about fictional characters, they must
support it in real life!
A: No, enjoying reading or writing about something is not
the same as supporting it in real life. Agatha Christie is not a mass murderer,
despite having fictionally killed over 100 people.
Q: Well, I guess it’s okay if the person shipping it is
doing so to deal with abuse or trauma of their own. But only then! Everyone else is fair game.
A: And how, pray tell, do you plan to enforce this arbitrary
rule? You’re planning to compel people
to show their victim bone fides to
you, a complete stranger? So that you can pass judgement on whether their
trauma was “real enough” or if they are “victim enough” to warrant shipping
something you disapprove of? Not only is that absurd, it’s extremely offensive and damaging to the very people you’re purporting to help.
You don’t get to be the arbiter of someone else’s life experiences, period.
Some people use fandom as a coping mechanism, yes, and that is 100% their
business. Some people ship unhealthy/abusive ships for completely benign
reasons, up to and including “because they look pretty together” and that is perfectly valid. You don’t get a
free pass to harass someone in the name of great justice here.
Q: Fuck you, I’m going to harass someone anyway. I might
even make a blog about it!
A: Well, you’re an asshole then. I hope you step on a lego.
do you ever think of a pairing and you’re like “haha how would that even work” so you try and figure out how it would work and the more you think about it the more it makes sense and the more you like the dynamic? and then you’re stuck shipping this random ass ship and you have nothing to say for yourself except like, “oops”?
