Saiko’s online friend

In chapter 34, an online friend of Saiko’s was mentioned:

image

“That American Bastard”

Going back to the volume 1 omake, Saiko exchanged words online with an unknown person:

image

I don’t know if this has already been discussed, as I wasn’t active in the fandom back then, but I’m wondering if this @hangyakunomasao (hangyaku no masao) is the same person or will somehow be important for Saiko’s character development.

In the JP raws, their online name is spelt

反逆のまさお

image

(thanks @lacuna-matata for sending me the raws!)

This might seem familiar to you, as the format is similar to the title of another anime series- Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion or Hangyaku no Lelouch. So their online name is ‘Masao of the Rebellion’ and is probably a reference to the anime (Saiko is a neet after all so it figures her online friends are anime fans).

Now this is where I’m not so sure because I don’t know Japanese. Masao as far as I can tell is a boy’s name but it’s written all in hiragana there, not the kanji usually used for the name. Does anyone know why this would be or if that’s a common thing for online names? Or if someone not as familiar with Japanese Kanji like an American weeb (or me, the Australian weeb) or a ghoul without formal education would use it?

Either way, 反逆 (hangyaku) means:

  • treason
  • treachery
  • mutiny
  • rebellion
  • insurrection

I wonder if this ‘Masao’ will be important somehow, especially considering the story seems to be moving towards a revolution or ‘rebellion’. Just some interesting food for thought!

Edit: There’s also an interesting meta by @inthesweetmadness on this person being Scarecrow that I forgot to mention which you can find here!! [x]

I knew this “Masao of the Rebellion” would be important one day!

Saiko was first introduced in :re playing a Playstation

and has been tied to a symbol with Playstation buttons for eyes on her blanket and in the calendar

Scarecrow speaks in Playstation speak

At this stage, all signs point towards Hide/Scarecrow being Saiko’s online friend who ironically has the handle “@masaooftherebellion”. In the latest chapter Hide has helped stage a rebellion within the CCG.

I’m lost. What were the sings of scarecrow being Hide??

coromoor:

There weren’t really explicit “signs” just a LOT of plot points and details that were easily fit into theories. It was always possible that it could have been someone else but things lined up really nicely with Scarecrow being Hide.

  • The chapter titled ‘Dry Rice Field’ in TG was when Hide and Touka met in Kamii. Scarecrows guard crops and fields from crows:
  • As @ishida-why mentioned here [x], Hide and Kaneki’s characters were tied to Emil and Sinclair in Demian, and from what happened in the ending, it might parallel Kaneki …. eating Hide’s face/neck
  • This fits with Scarecrow being unable to speak properly if his throat was damaged. He speaks with written signs and playstation symbols (aka gibberish) and when he rescued Amon he pronounced his name strangely (Aghmonn) showing a scar on his neck
  • Although Scarecrow was labelled a C-Rate ghoul, he used Rc gas to take down the ghouls who were with Amon which led to the theory that Scarecrow was human and someone who had information from the CCG who developed the gas (aka Hide)
  • Scarecrow was also at the Auction, monitoring the goings on from the control room
  • From this, people theorised that it fits with Scarecrow keeping tabs on Sasaki if he was Hide
  • There’s also the idea that Scarecrow was Saiko’s online friend based on them both being tied to Playstation symbols [x]. This also fits with Hide keeping tabs on Kaneki.

There’s probably a few more but those are the main points I can think of!

What are your thoughts on Scarecrow’s future involvement in the upcoming storyline?

LMAO, well, I was very wise to tell myself not to answer you before the new chapter came out when I received your ask this morning, just in case Scarecrow was the one who shot Furuta, because the new chapter finally tells us who Scarecrow is! xDDDD

image

So I believe the new chapter should answer your question about Scarecrow/Hide’s future involvement in the story, him being apparently on the side of the “humans” (Matsuri notwithstanding since he’s a Washuu?) who rebelled against Furuta’s CCG.

This chapter and this new reveal definitely makes me think that there now are 3 sides:

  • there is Furuta’s CCG (aka the Oggai, people like Mutsuki and Ui, V, Kanou’s dead army and the Clowns who are probably still backing him),
  • there is Kaneki leading the ghouls (+ Hirako and the 0 squad)
  • and there is a third side with Hide (”Mr.Terrorist”) & Marude ready to welcome all the CCG investigators who, like Amon (although I’m unsure if he’s currently “with them”), don’t feel ready to fight with Kaneki, seeing as “he killed Arima Kishou”, or for the ghouls’ side in general.

Though I’m pretty convinced for now that Hide’s role will be to try and bring closer the two sides (Kaneki’s and Marude’s) that are going to fight against Furuta’s, which is an amazing role to have (unless he really has a suspicious agenda). All in all, this is very exciting! 😀

Have a nice day Anon!

okay i’m sorry but someone has to do this, otherwise it doesn’t feel right:

what if Scarecrow is Uta holding a sign saying that he’s Hide?

I’m still on team #everyone-is-Uta tbh my dudes

no but think about it: Uta appeared to Kaneki as “Hide” in the sewers, that’s the only reason “Hide” managed to walk out of the sewers without dying of his injuries.

Then “Hide” found himself nose to nose with the real Hide who was also going after Kaneki and Uta attacked him so that Hide would never speak about Uta’s “no face” abilities.

Then we’re in :Re, it’s been 4 years but Hide is still in a coma at the hospital and Uta visits him regularly, masquerading as Touka whenever he goes,

to make sure Hide will never wake up and speak.

TL;DR Hide in the sewers was Uta. The Touka that Shirazu saw at the hospital was Uta and Scarecrow in ch138 is Uta.

^ this is Uta too by the way.

So with Roma’s backstory it is possible that ghouls can extend their lifespan. Thus we can assume that the original OEK is incredibly old (skull depiction). if he is to parallel kaneki then it is possible for him to have children. Many children, due to his long life. now I have this far fetched theory going on where Hide is one of the og OEK’s children (Naagas?) and is a quarter ghoul with inhuman capabilities. But I don’t have enough info to prove me right. Still, wouldn’t this be super cool?!

midnight-in-town:

Hello! And I’m sorry Anon, but I just don’t really favor the theory that Hide is not fully human. :/

Please know that this is just me being completely biased, especially since there is definitely something up with him having an agenda, but I’d rather have him as an extremely intelligent human rather than a hybrid (or child/grandchild of a hybrid), simply because it feels like all the cool/strong characters are all hybrids or ghouls or experiments.

I mean, look at Juuzou who’s the strongest human now that Arima is gone: people do wonder if he’s not a hybrid as well, which is why I’d love for Hide to be a super cool human character.

Again, I’m just completely biased and I’m waiting to see…

image

who these kids are really, before truly considering the idea that Hide is blood related to the previous OEG/the Naagaraj. That’s just the way it is, Hide being a human in cahoots with Eto and/or the Clowns (and Marude obviously) pleases me way more than Hide being a hybrid. 🙂

Sorry that I can’t be helpful, but have a nice day Anon!

image

Hello 🙂 Actually I’ve been Team Scarecrow for a long time now. 🙂

I used to really enjoy the Washuu theory until Arima revealed what he was and what the Sunlit Garden was about, to which I didn’t stop thinking that Hide could be a Washuu, but I liked the theory less for the reasons I explained above. Besides, it’s hard to explain how he would have escaped the Sunlit Garden or the Washuu family as a kid (since Rize is the only exception so far).

As for being a Clown, well, there is nothing telling us that the Clowns wouldn’t agree to humans joining them, now is there? Finally, there is also the theory of him being Eto’s helper, because he was the witch’s servant in the play (ch62) and I believe the witch was always described in symbolism to be Eto.

So anyway, I’ve been team Scarecrow for a long time because Scarecrow was never shown really fighting with a kagune but has been shown in quite the suspicious places (on top of helping Amon). However, there is another theory saying that Scarecrow could be Rio/Shikorae’s brother (better ask @linkspooky in case you’re interested because they make it quite convincing).

Again I’m not saying that Hide being a Washuu is impossible, nothing is at this point (especially with Yoshitoki’s previous name being Chika and all), but my personal bias would rather that he isn’t, unless there is a way for him to be a 100% human Washuu. xD

We’ll see, but these are just my personal preferences, I am probably not taking into account all the hints (mainly through symbolism) that we’ve had about Hide so far. Have a nice weekend Anon!

Hey there👋🏻 I wanted to ask you about your opinion of the theory that Hide is actually from the sunlit garden, I find it kind of reasonable but I’d like to hear your point of view. Great metas you post by the way ;)

dreamofcentipedes:

Thanks anon! I’ve seen that theory and I think it’s pretty cool, but I don’t really adhere to it for three reasons. 1) I find it hard to believe that the tyrannical Washuus would let one of their Garden children go free into the world and potentially reveal everything they’ve been doing (if Hide is from the Garden, then he definitely escaped rather than being let loose); 2) I don’t think it’s necessary for Hide to be from the Garden to motivate his actions or give him the ability to do them; and, 3) The symbolism doesn’t match up.

I think Hide’s intelligence is more of a device to involve him more deeply in the story than a regular human would normally be able to, and as a crucial agent to Kaneki’s tragedy/recovery, it’s very important that he is involved. Besides, he goes to one of Japan’s top universities – his smarts aren’t all that surprising. His interest in Ghouls in particular comes from finding out that Kaneki is one – they’ve only talked about it twice before; in the park as kids as any kid might (and Kaneki only remembers it because it’s now relevant to him) and after hearing a news report about a Ghoul attack, which is pretty natural. And remaining conscious after the attack from Nishiki could easily just be a testament to Hide’s devotion to Kaneki rather than a sign of unusual skills.

image

Hide only starts tailing Yamori when he sees him leaving Anteiku. From his attempted phone call, we can see that his primary concern was Kaneki’s well-being. As we know that Hide is well-read about Ghouls, he might have recognised the infamous ‘Jason’ – if not, he still looks massively suspicious. Perhaps he even heard some of the noises of battle outside.

image

I think Hide was just an intelligent human who got caught up in this whole mess for the sake of his friend.

But this is no longer the case.

As Scarecrow, Hide is now a Half-Ghoul. Scarecrow freeing Amon and calling him by name confirmed my belief in this theory. Part of his throat is missing from when he allowed Kaneki to feed on him, resulting in his distorted voice and the need to conceal his face, and since he seems to be a failed subject, he has been unable to regenerate. Indeed, there is a scar around his throat area – and doesn’t Scarecrow’s rubbish mask remind you of Hide’s terrible drawing skills?

image
image

But now, he has a larger role in the grand schemes of things – and yet, it is a role that is still essentially the same. Both before and after, his mission is to protect Kaneki.

image

Hide’s role in the school play can only be foreshadowing – mentioning it has no other purpose, and we’ve already seen that Kaneki has become the King he portrayed (a role in which he will prove to be unexpectedly good). This is why I say the symbolism for Hide to be revealed to have been from the Sunlit Garden doesn’t match up – there are no witches in the Garden. Eto, on the other hand, has continuously been associated with witch imagery (observation from linkspooky’s meta).

image

This had led to speculation that Hide might have been working for Eto all along, or else, because of his get-up, he is secretly a Clown. But if either of those are true, why does he tail Yamori and Nico? If he’s in cahoots with Eto, he would know where Yamori’s base is already, and if he’s in cahoots with the Clowns, through Nico he would know where Yamori’s base is already.

But then, Kaneki was not always the King. He only became the King in :re, and that is when Hide becomes the Witch’s Servant. I think that Eto, after having heard about the sacrifice Hide made for Kaneki and seeing his efforts to rescue Amon, freed him from Kanou’s labs to act as Kaneki’s remote bodyguard when she or Arima could not be there in person to guarantee his safety. Eto needed to use Aogiri to harass Kaneki so he could grow stronger for the role he must fulfil, but it would all be for nothing if he died – Eto presided over him herself in the Rose Arc, and she trusted that role to Arima in the Rushima Arc, but who saved him in the Auction Arc? It was Scarecrow, who activated the intercom so that Kaneki’s screams could be heard. We also saw him rowing away from Rushima before the landing could take place a little after Eto’s speech – presumably she told him that the King was on the mainland, and he had to get there before shit hits the fan.

It’s possible that Hide might be both from the Garden and Eto’s servant, but I’m not sure how necessary to the plot Hide being from the Garden would actually be, since Kaneki already has a connection to that world through Arima. So, I think that Hide was an intelligent but ordinary human whose steady purpose in the protection of his friend has aligned with those of some very influential people. I believe Kaneki will meet Hide again in this upcoming arc to parallel their meeting at the end of the original Anteiku Raid; only where that meeting heralded Hide’s ‘death’, this one shall herald his life.

Hello! I love your analysis, so I wonder about your opinion on this? Do you think after Scarecrow threw the gas, a struggle took place? To me, the sound effects (snap, the ghouls shouting) and the way they were knocked out lead me to think Scarecrow knocked them out rather than the gas, which could’ve been a distraction. If it’s like this, I wonder how he did it without any weapon or anything? (especially if he’s Hide lol) Thank you!

Hey Anon 🙂 Thanks for the nice words :3

And I’m not sure but…

image
image

Considering the small bubbles “snap” and “bump” it’s possible a small struggle took place. 🙂

Amon couldn’t fight but Scarecrow is ranked C by the CCG (which doesn’t mean much when it comes to his strength) so, since I’m quite sure those Aogiri ghouls were probably not great fighters (otherwise they wouldn’t have been assigned to this job), between that can and Scarecrow punching them once it was probably enough to bring them down.

Remember that this can was only a prototype back in TG vol 10…

image

but back then it could already…

image

…bring a few ghouls to their knees for a short while, so if it was developed properly, a punch on their heads could be all that it took to escape. xD

I hope it answers your question Anon! Have a nice day 🙂

Hello! What do you thing regarding Scarecrow’s actions towards Amon? (And the strong likelihood it’s Hide at this point)

midnight-in-town:

Hey Anon! 🙂

Well….. Hm, honestly I’m not sure of what to think that wasn’t already explained here which is that, considering the fact that Scarecrow seemed to know Amon before he was taken by Aogiri (he called him “Amon-san”)…

I still find more likely for Scarecrow to be Hide rather than for him to be Rio’s (Shikorae’s) brother (which is the other popular theory).
Obviously that doesn’t mean that Scarecrow has to be Hide but I can see this chapter as another hint personally. 🙂

Besides…

This looks like one of those things that the CCG uses to release Rc suppressant gas and Hide could have taken one of those from the CCG since he worked there for a short while so… I like the Scarecrow = Hide possibility! 😀

It’s just too bad Scarecrow couldn’t free Seidou as well though, but Seidou being seen as a success, he was probably watched over more carefully than Amon. Oh well, I’m glad Amon could get away from Aogiri thanks to him and I wonder if the friend(s) he mentioned to Seidou on Rushima was in fact Scarecrow. 😀

I can’t wait to see who’s hiding behing Scarecrow to be honest, it’s really exciting ^_^

I hope it answers your question Anon! Have a nice day 🙂

Hey Anon and awww, thank you so much for the nice words…! :3
I’m generally not fond of blogs with music myself (especially when I can’t find the pause button xD), that’s why I really tried to only use instrumental music so that it just adds to the atmosphere in case some people like to read while listening to music, like me. :3

Anyway, thanks for giving my playlist a chance, that’s really nice of you ❤

As for Scarecrow and Amon, I totally agree with you 🙂 I mean, considering this scene…

I prefer Scarecrow being Amon’s “friend” since I’m also not super fan of Amon being acquainted with the :Re guys behind the scene the whole time.

That being said, Amon gave rather precise directions and the operation led by Tsukiyama to save the people on Rushima was a big one so… maybe Amon heard about that operation from someone (like Scarecrow if he’s Hide for example?) and thought that Tsukiyama & co wouldn’t be against saving more people fighting the CCG?

I can’t say at this point, but there were people where Amon told Seidou to go so… maybe it’s easier to think that this time around Amon was counting on the :Re guys, either because he’s acquainted with them, or because someone told him about them going to Rushima to save a few Aogiri members.

No matter which it is though, I’m pretty sure Ishida will clear up the matter, especially if Amon got acquainted with the :Re guys after escaping from Aogiri. 🙂

I hope it answers your question, Anon! Thanks again for the nice words and have a nice day :)))

Hey Anon!

Well, since Scarecrow saving him basically allowed Amon to escape Aogiri, I’d say that his escape happened after Kanou had experimented on him and dubbed him a floppy because he couldn’t control his kakuja.

So all of Kanou’s work with Amon and observations led to him calling Amon a failure and then Scarecrow managed to save Amon from Aogiri.

I hope it makes more sense like that 🙂 Have a nice day Anon!
