There’s basically two theories of what could make Touka crack at this point that are floating in my head.
1) Rediscovering Juuzou, and finding him in the Arata armor. The last time we see Juuzou, he was being carted away while still wearing it.
It’s highly unlikely that he made it to the surface before Kaneki, Kaneki’d the whole joint up. If he did make it to the surface, the ambulance probably did not have time to take him back so he’s likely just sitting there in an area easy to find.
There’s buildup for some kind of confrontation between the two that mostly goes unresolved.
2) Reuniting/Confronting Yoriko
The easiest way to make characters sad in this manga however, is not confrontation by people they hate, but rather people they love. I mean, Touka and Kaneki’s shared fear is not only one of separation but also of intimacy as shown when they both could not really bring themselves to face at all the human most important to them out of fear of rejection or loss.
I mean, Kaneki’s words in this scene so profoundly saddened her that Touka immediately needed physical comfort. Having to pretend she didn’t care about Yoriko softened her up to that extent.
Imagine then, Touka seeing Yoriko again after making the decision to physically turn her back on her, and knowing that it didn’t help in the long run of things. I’m not even seapking of the morality of the decision itself, that’s irrelevant, it’s still something Touka is going to be carrying the guilt of in her heart when her friend sees her again, and then doesn’t blame her for being a ghoul. Honestly, I’m expecting a parallel to this scene in full considering how much Yoriko parallels Kaneki and Hide’s bond already.
I mean as heartwarming as this scene is, it’s also always been a tragic one too, borne out of both Kaneki and Hide’s decisions not to confront each other until the literal last moment possible, and we see Touka make a similiar decision not to warn Yoriko ahead of time when she knew that Mutsuki would likely target her.
Part of it may have been security reasons, but just like how Amon avoided Akira for three years, or Kaneki avoided Hide, or what Yoshimura did to Eto, how much of it was rooted in logistics and wanting to protect them, and how much was rooted in a fear of not wanting to confront and be rejected by the person who they could probably bear the least being rejected by.
Anyway, none of this is to elaborate on Touka’s flaws so much as to explain why her emotions would be so tied up, that a positive reunion could actually cause her to break down. As usual, characters in Tokyo Ghoul are complicated and getting closer sometimes results in them hurting each other more. Though I fully expect that once that emotional hurdle is cleared, it will lead to positive growth finally rather than regression and stagnation as we’ve seen so far with all of these characters repressing their emotions.
So… a while ago during the one of my usual readthroughs, I noticed something in Chapter 50 which I’ve been meaning to talk about.
When Eren first uses the Coordinate, they are at a pretty desperate situation like Levi later says. Mikasa is hurt and can’t fight, Eren doesn’t have his 3DMG on and is pretty much done at that point, but the thing about the 3DMG is… they’re on a plains land. Sure, they can use the Titans, but that’s not the point I’m trying to make here.
They are literally in the middle of a grass field. Grass. Grass. And then… after Mikasa and Eren run away… there’s this shit right here:
….Wait a second… what the…
Why are trees growing there?! What the hell?! Where tf did those come from?!?!
Okay, this is immediately linked to my theory that Titans are plants but more specifically… this flower/plant thing has been foreshadowed so much at this point, that I’m betting my money on the theory that the Source of all Organic Material is a tree/plant of some sort. Because 1) @falcon94ssy ‘s analysis, including the constant talks about bloodlines like here:
The flowers in Eren’s dream, the flowers inside the Titan in Episode 9… there are references everywhere. Titans only moving during sunlight and regenerating limbs?
Oh and 2) Isayama REALLY likes Norse mythology. It wouldn’t surprise me if the World Tree was the source of all organic material at this point.
Eren using the Coordinate, aka the direct connection to the source seems to have made those trees grow. Now this may just be scenery artwork but like I said, you don’t see small trees growing around the main characters on a pure field of fucking grass. This has been my analysis of this. Now hurry up Isayama.
Honestly, I love this idea. We’ve never seen Claudia’s face after all. I could easily imagine a scenario where Undertaker felt tied to his glasses until he met Claudia. She would have been about nine when he deserted, but being able to use the other senses is something she could have taught him. It would a lovely story honestly.
There has been some discussion about this image in chapter 118.
The big question is who is the ‘he’ that is doing the pursuing? Is it Ciel, Sebastian, or someone else entirely? There is also the question as to the identity of the first and second rabbits.
The few things that do seem to be clear is that the top rabbit is Ciel. On the second row, you have a bunny sitting up that appears to represent Lizzy, and another that is lying face down. The most common assumption is that is Edward as it is next to Lizzy, but it’s hard to say for certain since we see few details. It is also possible that this rabbit is Bravat since Lizzy stands by him for now. The final two rabbits are Soma and Agni.
My personal opinion is the ‘he’ is Ciel. He should be pursuing Lizzy, but now he is focused on Bravat as his priority. For the past two weeks, he has been busy with the music hall and band and has apparently done nothing to save Lizzy. While it’s true that Lizzy wouldn’t stay with Ciel, it’s still curious that has done nothing for her. He hasn’t even attempted to find out if she is well and safe. People have been dying in the Blue Sect, but he hasn’t tried to even see if she’s still alive.
It’s also possible that the ‘he’ is Sebastian. He is first interest will always be Ciel and his soul even when Ciel orders him to stop others. Bravat and his cult will never be his priority.
Speaking of Sebastian, there is something else that interest me. The people here are being represented as rabbits and are displayed on a tray that could be used for deserts. Perhaps Sebastian is about to drop his disguise in front of everyone revealing himself to be the wolf prepared to devour the rabbits.
Thoughts?
The assumption about the rabbits as desserts for Sebastian really impressed me!
In Circus Arc William T.Spears even compared the souls to the rabbits.
The Funtom’s Bitter Rabbit suddenly has got a new meaning to me…
Ha, interesting. An Anon reminded me that Undertaker spoke about rabbits, too.
