coromoor:

this has been on my mind for ages now

  • hide is kaneki’s connection to the human world
  • touka is kaneki’s guide into the ghoul world
  • if you put their features together- touka’s hair over one eye showing only one kakugan & the scars on hide’s mouth- it makes up kaneki’s mask

With :re ending and Kaneki likely falling asleep inside Dragon for a long period of time before his inevitable reawakening, there’s a few set of characters I’d like to discuss who could potentially have the most pivotal roles in the upcoming epic.

Another important detail, is that Ishida likes to use Poker Suits for symbolic purposes in his manga quite a bit. As a lot of people have noticed, thus far we have King (:re), Jack (Arima Spinoff), and Joker (Suzuya Side Story), but the suits of “Ace and Queen” in specific aren’t present yet and will more than likely be used as titles for the sequel.. probably in some random language.

image

The first character I’ll be discussing is Rize Kamishiro, who’s name can also mean “Age of the Gods” depending on the kanji used. I admittedly don’t think she’s dead, nor will die in general, at least until her role is fulfilled in Part 3. She has a link with the Queen suite in specific, and alongside that correlates to a few royal figures symbolically.

image

Hel is a giantess/goddess who rules over the identically-named Hel, the underworld where many of the dead dwell. Her name’s meaning of “Hidden” surely has to do with the underworld and the dead being “hidden” or buried beneath the ground.

Satan is described in the New Testament as the “ruler of the demons” and “the god of this age”. In the Book of Revelation, Satan appears as a Great Red Dragon, who is defeated by Michael the Archangel and cast down from Heaven. He is later bound for one thousand years, but is briefly set free before being ultimately defeated and cast into the Lake of Fire.

Both figures fit her well considering she found underground as the source of the oviduct toxin that converted human into ghoul, they of which originate from Arabian mythology as demons from the underworld.

Secondly she was referred to by Furuta as Dragon who was later beaten by Kaneki who parallels Archangel Michael in this instance and sealed her underground. The symbol on her forehead is also a clear reference to the Leviathan/Satanic Cross that represents fire and brimstone, which is commonly associated with Hell.

image

Something else I’d like to note are the Anteiku Raid parallels present in this scenario. Back in Part 1, Kaneki was killed by Arima under the sewers of V14 who put his violent, ghoul nature represented by Shironeki who was formed after a tulpa conversation with Rize, to rest. In reality though he spared him, and this led to his human and ghoul personas blending to form Haise, a more balanced persona who Kaneki referred to as “a peaceful dream”.

image

Now in :re we see Kaneki who is a direct parallel to Arima in this instance, killing Dragon Rize underground and putting her rampant oviduct to rest to reveal a more peaceful, human looking Rize.

image

As @sentrakk mentioned in this meta recently, there’s a lot of Christianic symbolism at play that correlates with the current story.

The Beast and the False Prophet are cast into the lake of fire while the Dragon is imprisoned in the bottomless pit for 1000 years. The Dragon is freed after 1000 years, tries to deceive all nations in four corners of the Earth and gathers people to fight the God, but is eventually defeated and cast into the lake of fire as well. The wicked dead and all of those who died during the thousand-year reign of Jesus are resurrected and judged. A new Heaven and new Earth replace the old ones and there is no more death or suffering as the old order of things has passed away.

We’re now at the phase where Dragon is symbolically imprisoned underground for 1000 years. After a brief timeskip to represent the Dragon being freed after 1000 years, we’ll see Rize who parallels the Dragon reemerge from her slumber to spark a new set of events, meaning our queen is more than likely going to survive this ordeal and be a central character in Part 3. Perhaps to parallel Haise, she’ll return with a personality reset after awakening. When all of these events are said and done, she may be able to overcome her tragedy and live the normal life that Furuta couldn’t.

image

The next character is Hideyoshi Nagachika, who doesn’t exactly have a character arc yet and could be explored in depth a lot more in Part 3. Alongside Shuu, Touka, Haise, Rio, and Kaneki himself, he’s a member of the Ace Card suite’s.

image

In particular, there’s a lot of mystery surrounding Hide’s origins and where exactly he came from. We still have no insight on his backstory, possible relatives, where he came from before befriending Kaneki in school, or what exactly his motivations are in the story right now outside of aiding Kaneki and the CCG.

image

This also connects with the fact that there’s seemingly a connection between him and the 24th ward, what with the three dot pattern apparent on the cloaks of the children present in an illustration of him. The kanji in his name “Hideyoshi Nagachika” is also a minefield of hints that could mean a multitude of things depending on the usage.

image

If he does have a connection to the 24th ward or underground in general, it could also explain why the Washuu were after him, because he never gave Amon or Akira a clear explanation as to how he was in their way. It’s possible that he could be a half human who managed to escape from the Sunlit Garden with important information on the Washuu that could have led to their downfall.

image

And lastly, there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the events of the sewer incident during the Anteiku Raid and how exactly Hide escaped with his injuries. So all in all another confrontation between the two to clear up that event and their relationship in general is important.

image

And finally Amon Koutarou, who was rather hidden throughout the course of :re until his recent reappearance. In Part 1 he was essentially the deuteragonist of the story and we often shifted back to his perspective as an investigator while focusing on Kaneki’s journey as a half ghoul. Then when :re came, Haise took on the investigator role while Amon lurked through the shadows as a half ghoul, but we hardly had any shift back to his character or what he was up to.

If patterns hold true, in Part 3 we may see the focus shift back to Amon as the protagonist while Kaneki spends some time underground. You’re probably wondering, “what would Amon even do in the story?”, but there’s quite a lot of points revolving around his character that has yet to come full circle. Big thanks to @amon15 for pointing out some interesting lore involving Amon’s arc.

image

The first point of development for Amon should be breaking away from the CCG system, because we all know “investigators fighting for peace” is bullshit, especially since there’s a lot of shady things circulating around the organization.

image

It’s also possible that Amon knew the Washuu were up to no good but chose not to act on it, considering Hide freed him from Aogiri and they remained in contact afterwards, and he’s also connected to Marude who was doing research of his own on Rueshima at the same time Amon stormed the island to save Akira and Seidou.

image

As Kaiko also enlightened us on a few chapters back, the Washuu were consuming the bodies of dead investigators. If this happens to include Mado’s body as well, it should act as a big catalyst for him to abandon the CCG and make his own path.

image

This intertwines with the fact that the Quinx as well need to break away from the CCG, because as Saiko mentioned in Chapter 132, the CCG is a slaughterhouse that no one should be a part of, and Shirazu’s body as well is still missing.

Considering she especially out of the 3 first gen Quinx has yet to receive a proper character arc, joining up with Amon and becoming a “terrorist” should be a positive change of growth for her. This is also ironic considering Saiko and Urie on a few occasions have confronted Amon, and foil him in many regards. Urie’s father Mikoto could have also possibly had his body consumed as well, which further adds to the fact that he needs to abandon his work ethic there.

image

Another important issue Amon has yet to reconcile within himself, is his ghoulhood. He still sees himself as more of an investigator fighting for justice rather than a ghoul, evident by the fact that he continues to use his quinque while fighting around his loves ones instead of his Kagune. To come to a proper acceptance of himself and his abilities, he needs to rely on both Takizawa and Akira to unify his human and ghoul halves properly.

image

Akira to understand and accept him regardless to show that he’s still capable of being loved as a ghoul, and Takizawa to show him how to properly make use his ghoul abilities and get adjusted to his body. In return this will lead to Takizawa being accepted by Akira and realizing the more human side of his nature that he’s been rejecting since he consumed his parents.

image

Now on to the next point, the murder mystery revolving around Kurona’s father Nanao Yasuhisa who was the president of the Sphinx corporation, had a secret lab below his mansion, and provided the CCG with ghouls blended in bottles for some unknown purpose. However, he tried to leak information about the cruelty taking place on ghouls in the research and was likely silenced in the process.

image

After being informed of Sphinx and the shady dealings of the CCG by Eto in Chapter 115 like ghouls being blended in bottles to form an RC cell liquid, Amon pondered on what to do about the case but never got to the bottom of solving it since he had no one to report the situation to since it directly involved the CCG as a whole.

Since the Washuu and V are relatively taken care of at this point and there’s nothing getting in the way of Amon investigating the murder surrounding Kurona’s parents, he should reunite with her and bring closure to this case once and for good, for the sake of her, and her parents. He does kind of need to repay her for saving him from the lab, and she needs her character arc completed, so this would be a great way to do so.

image

It’s also possible that the Sunlit Garden is tied into this as well since half humans from V like Kaiko who were born there needed a way to halt their aging, and an influx of RC cell liquid to reverse telomere could have been a temporary solution. We don’t know much about the Garden as a whole either, so this could lead to exposition on the facility and the events taking place there.

image

And now on to probably the most important aspect of his character arc that didn’t exactly go anywhere yet despite there being various foreshadowing and reference, the kingly symbolism surrounding his character.

There’s many royal figures correlating to Amon that you can read about here, but the figure Ishida likes to parallel Amon to the most, is Odin, the One Eyed Ruler of the Norse Gods. Some quick similarities between them would be..

image

~ In Old Norse texts, Odin is depicted as one-eyed and long-bearded, frequently wielding a spear named Gungnir, and wearing a cloak (Amon hiding his ghoul eye, and the quinque he often uses, Doujima)

image

~ Odin is often the favorite god and ally of outlaws, those who had been banished from society for especially vicious crimes, as well. (Amon working alongside Hakitori and Takizawa, CCG outlaws who are outcasts of society)

image

~ He maintains close connections with the berserkers and other Aesir warriors whose fighting techniques and associated spiritual practices center around achieving a state of unification with certain ferocious totem animals (Amon in his berserk Owl Kakuja)

image

He’s the ruler of the Aesir tribe of deities, yet he often wanders far from their dominion, Asgard, on long, solitary journeys through the galaxy on personal quests (Amon wandering through Tokyo alone as Floppy earlier in the series)

With Kaneki taking a rest and the ghouls more than likely needing a new ruler, it’s possible that Amon will take up the mantle of king in the meantime to establish order. After all, like Kaneki defeating Arima and becoming the OEK, Amon killed Donato, the Crown Clown and should inherit some role of leadership soon.

image

And to continue the Norse mythology surrounding Amon and his connection to Odin, his father Donato also happens to be based on the God of Knowledge, Mimir. While imprisoned in Cochlea, doves like Haise often came to him as a source of knowledge to aid them on their investigations.

Mímir or Mim is a figure in Norse mythology renowned for his knowledge and wisdom who is beheaded during the Æsir-Vanir War. Afterward, the god Odin carries around Mímir’s head and it recites secret knowledge and counsel to him.

image

During the Dragon arc which is a lot like the Aesir Vanir War wherein two groups of deities raged war against each other that led to the creation of a unified pantheon similar to the Alliance, Donato like Mimir is beheaded and gives us knowledge of his motives.

If Ishida continues to follow the lore, like Odin we’ll probably see Amon carrying around Donato’s head as a source of council, or rather a symbol of sorts. From the context of Nico’s words, it feels like Donato may have wanted this to happen, alongside the fact that he intentionally let Amon take his life.

image

Alongside the kingly symbolism, there’s also quite a bit of “Dragon symbolism” surrounding his character throughout the story. Why is the Dragon symbolism so important? Because it could be foretelling to an inevitable confrontation between himself and Kaneki, who represents the Phoenix in the duo.

image

In Chinese mythology the Phoenix who represents Yin energy, and Dragon who represents Yang energy, are considered mortal enemies. Yet when the two are in unison they represent a perfect balance of Yin/Yang harmony.

image

This corresponds with the fact that Kaneki massacred all 101 Oggai and no one ever spoke a word of them again, which is odd considering the abuse and manipulation of children is painted in a very negative light by narrative terms, but their whereabouts and whether they survived or not was brushed to the side by the CCG and just about everyone.

image

One Oggai in specific, Hajime Hazuki sparked a flame of motivation in Amon. So needless to say, there may be a confrontation between the two about that event which may lead to a clash. In the aftermath, the two will likely come to terms and unify to tear down the throne of OEK since it’s built upon death instead of revolution, and create a proper memorial for the Oggai so they can be remembered.

image

Another minor detail worth mentioning is the fact that Eto wanted Amon dead for some reason. It’s possible that she could have wanted to get rid of him so there weren’t any loose ends that could backfire on Aogiri, but for some reason Ayato sounded somewhat sympathetic of “Floppy”. It’s possible that Amon and Ayato were in close connection considering..

image

Ayato had to get a card key to raid Cochlea from somebody with high authority right? With Eto alive and her being connected to the trio of Akira, Amon, and Takizawa, it’s possible that we’ll get clarification on why she wanted to kill him alongside some reconciliation since her father’s Kakuhou turned them into ghouls, and Akira’s mother was killed by her in the past.

Hey! About the last chapter, do you think Hide heard the noise owl made before the attack? In the translation is difficult to tell but in the originals? Maybe it’s just me clinging to the “Ghoul Hide” theory/dream. Love your blog, the salt and the animal videos.

randomthoughtpatterns:

I think you meant ch 167 since that’s where we first saw the fauxOwl attacking. Interestingly enough, I only noticed upon reread, but the first one to notice something was Suzuya.

So after V blew the whistle and hastily retreated, Suzuya started shaking. There’s also a sound around him that means he froze and couldn’t move, like a deer. Then the fauxOwl just straight up flopped to the ground in one giant heap. Then there’s the  「ガタッ」 around Hide, which means a clattering sound, could either be him standing up very suddenly from a chair, or he heard the fauxOwl?

It is interesting, isn’t it, that the two people to react were a guy raised by a ghoul and a shifty person we don’t even know the species of. I don’t know about you anon but Ishida can pry my Garden Ghoul Hide theory from my cold dead hands (or at least I’m into it until it gets Jossed in canon with words).

Uta, the Washuu and Hide’s ulterior motives.

hidewari:

So I know people like to have this anti narrative when it comes to any ideas they don’t like about their favourite characters, but I don’t think the Hide traitor theories should be so easily discredited. In fact, I think they’re quite substantive, just maybe not in the same way that others do, so let me give you my take on it.

I want to start off by saying that I have no doubts that Hide cares greatly for Kaneki. In my opinion, it’s really indisputable; I just don’t see how someone could go to such extreme lengths for another person and dedicate so much of their life to them just to gain their trust so they can betray them. It just seems completely nonsensical to me considering everything that Hide’s gone through for Kaneki, however, I don’t think that’s enough to discredit the idea that maybe he has a part in some sort of betrayal.

Aside from all the obvious implications that Hide seemingly has more knowledge on this whole clown situation than we may think, there has been so much tying him to the clowns in one way or another previously, that I’ll honestly be very surprised if that doesn’t end up going anywhere.

The links that Hide has to Uta by themselves are extensive. I made a post about their potential association here (this post addresses things like the headphones that Uta owned as well as a couple other things, thanks to @midnight-in-town for their contribution), and now that it’s confirmed that Hide was the one who sent Kaneki “The Hanged Man’s McGuffin,” I think we can file that away with the rest of the evidence since it was sent along with the mask from Uta.

Actually, the fact that Hide sent that book sort of feels like he was slipping Haise some hints about his old identity, which is interesting considering the fact that that’s obviously something the Washuu wouldn’t want him to find out about. This seems to be one of the earliest implications of Hide’s opposition to the Washuu.

image

We know that the Washuu were after Hide for whatever reason, and if we make the assumption that Uta is the original OEK just based on all the evidence we have so far, then we know that he too is in direct opposition to the Washuu. So, it’s not difficult to picture them conspiring if they share(d) an agenda.

image
image

In fact, if Uta is a Washuu and Hide has some sort of conspiracy with him, then that would explain why Hide knows so much about them in the first place when there didn’t seem to be anyone outside of the clan with that knowledge at the time.

Now, let’s not forget the main source of this whole traitor narrative either: the play that he and Kaneki performed in as children. (I think this is a very significant tool when it comes to Hide and Kaneki’s relationship, especially because of the fact that it was such a key focus in the original draft of the last episode of root A.)

image

We have very explicit clown imagery here, potentially tying him to them again, and not only that, but the role he’s in involves him betraying the prince (Kaneki) under the witch’s influence.

(Just as a quick side note, the general candidates for the witch seem to be:

  • Eto — potentially under the control of the Clowns if we assume that monster in recent chapters is her.
  • Itori — obvious link with the clowns and there’s also the fact that the mother of Hide’s counterpart in “The Penisman” very clearly resembles her.
  • Roma — again, very obvious link with the clowns.)

Now, here’s the important part that I feel gets overlooked when it comes to discussions about Hide’s potential betrayal — in the play, the witch’s servant is tricked into betraying the Prince under the guise that what he’s doing is for the Prince’s benefit.

I know Hide’s smart and manipulative, but so are Uta and Eto, or whoever else you want to believe had their part in this. It’s possible that Hide’s betrayal is not intentional and that he’s manipulated into it instead without his knowledge, or under the impression that he’s helping Kaneki.

Maybe Hide’s suggestion in chapter 165 (that he made with the intention of helping Kaneki) actually ends up getting Kaneki into a tight spot and that’s one aspect of betrayal that the play alludes to?

image

Going back to his potential conspiracy with Uta for a minute, I’m seeing some speculation that one of the Clowns’ goals is to take Hide out since they’re heading for HQ. Though I’m not 100% sure just yet, it’s possible that if this is true, it could be as a result of Hide turning his back on them (Uta) now that the Washuu are gone and they no longer share a common objective. After the Washuu’s demise, Hide no longer had any use for Uta or the Clowns and, obviously, Hide knows WAY too much to just let him run around with that knowledge when he’s no longer to be trusted. They’ll want to take him out for sure, so why not kill two birds with one stone and attempt to manipulate him into luring Kaneki to his demise as well?

Either way, giving the traitor narrative some credence by no means negates Hide’s love and dedication to Kaneki. After all, the play ends with the witch’s servant showing great remorse for his actions and he asks the Prince for forgiveness, which he eventually gives once the witch’s servant promises never to betray him again and fight by his side.

It would be an interesting direction to take, and all the foreshadowing that play does is going to prove to be significant for sure, certainly in the development of Kaneki and Hide’s relationship (they still have obvious issues that need sorting out and that just isn’t happening yet). So I wouldn’t so readily dismiss theories about Hide’s betrayal, but I also wouldn’t worry about such a narrative playing out; Hide’s care and dedication for Kaneki are genuine, without a doubt, and I believe they’ll prevail in the end, just as the conclusion to the play suggests where the Prince forgives his friend and puts all his faith and trust in him once more to be his strength and fight by his side.

@hidewari Can I just say that, while you know I totally agree with you when it comes to Hide having an agenda and not betraying Kaneki, I really really doubt that Hide possibly having a link with the Clowns is equal to currently having a falling out with them (and them trying to take him out).

It’s my and @linkspooky ky‘s little theory here (the last reblog) and actually, it’s something I feel is often misunderstood because Clowns =/= villains (contrarily to what most readers seem to think), at least not all of them. Roma acted as a villain (and she died), Donato and Furuta also are presented to be villains (and will most likely also die) but these three…

are different for reasons I explained here (namely having an agenda that isn’t just about Furuta’s plan and almost always making up for any nasty joke of theirs previously), and thus were foreshadowed to survive this and have their last laugh about how great this play was.

Anyway, in the post I linked above, @linkspooky and I discussed Uta’s gift of ch31.5 possibly being intended for Hide (who’s the one who then sent it to Kaneki with the book), just like it’s possible Hide lent him his headphones and played chess with him, so tbh I don’t really understand why people automatically think that Hide and Uta (or the Clowns in general) are now enemies, simply because the situation presents them to be on opposite sides.

I mean, it’s not like the Clowns ever played straight by the rules or according to our expectations before, and again, we saw that specifically with Uta. xD

After all, didn’t Uta, Itori and Nico help Kaneki in the past? So why should this be erased from their record, simply because they’re also helping Furuta?  So why can’t Hide have a link to the Clowns that is/was beneficial to everyone on several aspects (trading information, helping Hide to hide from the Washuus…) and that didn’t necessarily end in them “choosing to be on opposite sides and thus enemies”?

In my opinion, this never was as simple as that: Kaneki’s group and the CCG are the ones who think this is about taking a side (though V must believe in that as well, since Furuta is using them too), but the Clowns overall? They’re literally just stalling for time….

and there is nothing personal as to why they’re helping with Furuta’s plan…

…except for Donato (most likely) who has some beef and an upcoming confrontation with Amon (who’s standing firm on the opposite side).

TL;DR

  • Hide having a link with the Clowns? Possible.
  • Hide betraying Kaneki as a result? Not happening.
  • The Clowns and Hide being enemies then, because they “chose different sides in the current conflict”? Not necessarily (and in my opinion, nahhh).

I’m aware the Clowns (and Hide) are really complex characters and the fact we don’t know much about them isn’t helping with understanding their motivation, but they’re not impossible to read through either after 29 volumes of TG. That’s why personally I believe the notion of “choosing a side” besides their own enjoyment/interest in different things is something that flies completely over their heads. xD

Sorry for rambling, I’m aware I’m way too fond of the topic, so I hope you don’t mind. :3 Happy Easter!

midnight-in-town:

BTW, I forgot to mention that earlier during the week, but @linkspooky and I discussed the idea that the Clowns might still have a little agent inside the CCG who is leaking info and thus responsible for their perfect timing in the latest chapter!

And since Furuta is not in the CCG anymore in the current arc, it means it’s most likely someone else (a character we know?) who’s been leaking these info.

We’ve had another hint before about an unknown little spy during ch143 of TG actually, when Itori said…

image

because Furuta was there in the same scene, so the way she explained it to the rest of the gang makes me think that she possibly got this information from another person who had their way into the CCG.

Same for the Auction arc, since Uta didn’t bother hiding to Mutsuki that he knew the details of the operation:

image

even if this time the info could have also come from Furuta.

So who could this agent be, if they’re real of course (and if we know them)?

  • I also considered Ito Kuramoto because… well, he’s pretty irrelevant so far amongst all the other recurring investigators so maybe Sensei has something planned with him + he kinda has a fox face and that generally means the character is cunning/sly xD
  • Someone from Suzuya’s personal squad? Hanbee and Nakarai aside, the others two are like Kuramoto, pretty irrelevant despite being recurring characters…

That’s all I’ve got. Maybe the explanation to the impeccable timing is entirely different and there is no spy, but…

image

…I’m really trying not to underestimate Itori’s information network. xD

While talking with acchan we came up with the possibility that the spy among the CCG might actually be an unwitting one.

image

Remember, there was somebody else present at the meeting besides Kimi, Touka, Nishiki and Hideyoshi. Kaneki was there as well, and the attack started the moment the he suggested he go to find the source of the poison.

Kaneki himself might be the informant for the clowns, though entirely unaware of it.

Remember we still don’t know the full explanation of what happened in V14, and when Hide and Kaneki were on the rooftop talking abot it and confirming that Kaneki was indeed the one who scarred Hide’s face, it would have been the perfect time to finally elaborate on that whole scene…

Unless… there was something we are still not meant to know about it. Both Nikki and Shar @kingkishou and @mawjaw respectively have put forward a theory for awhile that during V14, there’s something suspicious about the empty eye underneath Kaneki’s eyepatch. [1,2].

Basically the theory goes, before Kaneki has his eye gauged out by Arima, we’re shown an eyepatch covering one of his eyes and his mask missing. Then the eyepatch is removed and the eye is already gaged out and looks like an empty socket before Arima even struck there.

image
image

However, afterwards suspiciously Uta is shown holding an eye while musing about the fate of Kaneki.

image

If that’s indeed Kaneki’s eye that he’s holding, removed by Uta himself that would put Uta present at the scene, as a third party besides both Kaneki and Hide.

Before I go on, here’s what we do know about V14.

  • Hide found Kaneki and either brought him too or found him inside of the sewers and told him to flee through V14.
  • Hide knew ahead of time somehow that Arima would be there waiting for him.
  • Hide told Kaneki that he would have to “prove his worth” to Arima.
  • Hide offered himself for Kaneki to eat up to replenish himself. Kaneki was indeed the person who ate Hide and scarred him.
image
image

However there are still several missing pieces that we do not know, and really cannot solve with just inference and occam’s razor.

image

We still do not know:

  • Who saved Hide when he was lying in the sewers half dead with half of his face eaten off.
  • Who gave Kaneki the eyepatch that covers half of his face.
  • Also, who took Kaneki’s mask after that point. As he was still wearing it after the fight with Amon, and is shown still wearing it when crawling around in pain before Hide found him.
image

Considering the fact that Hide lived, therefore it’s logical to infer that there was a third party. We also now have an explanation for who sent Kaneki the book, but not who sent him his mask back.

image

I mean, presumably it was Uta.

image

We don’t know exactly though his reason for sending it. Unless it was bait for Kaneki to return to his shop. However, if Uta knew that Kaneki was missing his mask becase Uta was the one who removed it from him due to him being the third party in the sewer than the reasons behind the two presents would click together.

Uta as a third party, removed Kaneki’s eyeball, either saved or facilitated the saving of Hide, and then placed a microphone behind Kaneki’s eyeball, or some similiar device to the one on Hajime Hazuki’s tongue in order to further track him as the main character in the clown’s play or for some other weird Uta related reason.

We are given several hints that there’s something behind one of Sasaki’s eyes that is giving him chronic pain. Specifically a pain in the back of his eyes.

image

In a recent color illustration, Kaneki is also shown as bleeding from that exact same eye which has caused people including myself to speculate he might need to rip out his human eye at some point rather than his ghoul one as a symbol of accepting his ghoul side.

image

Anyway, that’s all food for thought. Here’s my takeaway from what acchan put forward. There’s a microphone behind Kaneki’s eye still and Uta’s the one who put it there because he’s sneaky the clown.

@linkspooky THANK YOU! I had forgotten to mention this precisely but this is indeed another possibility (and I just love the sewer theory, because it also gives an agenda to Hide, as I explained in one link I added above)!

image

Hi Anon and thanks for reading! 🙂 Well, it’s because Kuramoto is rather recurring as an investigator and yet he has 0 arc or development (unlike Ui, Takeomi or even Kiyoko) that I’m suspecting him.
I mean it’s Ishida-sensei we’re talking about here and he even gave him several birthday arts, so I simply think there could be more to his character. xD

As for Hide, well, you said it, there is indeed something about his outfit in that childhood’s play to be remembered since Ganbo (a Clown) had a very similar makeup. I proposed other ideas in the link I added above, so please check them out because there is more than one I’m suspecting a link between Hide and the Clowns!

Just to precise though, Hide possibly having a few interests in common with the Clowns doesn’t mean that they’re 100% agreeing on everything or that he’s a villain (since not all the Clowns are villains in the first place, in my opinion).
I mean, this is just a theoretical example, but since Hide motivated Kaneki to go find a cure in the latest chapter, if he’s actually the person who informed the Clowns, you could see this as him making sure that the Clowns would act up precisely so that Kaneki would get moving.

Anyway, it’s all theoretical and I also really like the idea that Spooky-chan proposed just above 😀 so this should give us plenty to think about until we can see which explanation it is. 🙂

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! Have a nice weekend Anon :3

image

…OKAY, you sound like you want the whole thing Anon, so I and @linkspooky will deliver. 😉

For the record though, let me just say I really enjoy Hide’s character (and I think his friendship with Kaneki is 200% genuine) but I can’t stand fans who make it sound like he’s only about Kaneki.
Taking away a character’s agency when he was given so many warning signs of playing a bigger game is just the worst you can do as a fan, because Hide is way more compelling as someone who has other goals besides just Kaneki (and besides Kaneki himself really doesn’t need people revolving just around him, be it Touka, Hide, Tsukiyama or anyone else).

Anyway, “am I suspecting Hide”? Why, yes I am. I even gave a link above to a recap post about why I think there might be a link between him and the Clowns + Spooky-chan just wrote above too why there might be a strong link with Uta.
If you need more to consider that Hide possibly has an agenda though, then how about the latest crack theory thought up by @linkspooky?

image

It’s about ch31.5 and Kaneki’s two gifts for Christmas. We know that Hide definitely is the one behind the book (:Re ch164) and Uta the one behind the mask (:Re ch36). The remaining question is who, out of them both, sent the two items since they arrived at the same time?

One could think it’s Uta, but

image

…he denied it. Obviously Uta is not above lying (he’s a troll for a reason), but @linkspooky pointed out to me that Uta literally said that he “intended [the mask] as a present for a regular customer” precisely as we get a panel focusing on the headphones he was listening to and…

image

guess who is often associated with headphones?

Besides, didn’t people point out that Hide’s wound totally has a similarity to Kaneki’s very first mask? Which means that Kaneki’s first mask would be ideal to cover Hide’s wound:

image

So @linkspooky’s latest idea is that Uta actually sent Kaneki’s old mask to Hide as a present and he’s the one who then sent both the mask and the book to Kaneki for Christmas, which would mean that 1) Uta didn’t lie in ch36 and 2) Hide and Uta totally have a link in that case (and as I also proposed a while ago, maybe Hide even was the one Uta was playing chess with in ch38).

You can add this to the sewer theory that Spooky-chan explained just above, as well as my own recap post that’s proposing a few other ideas of the same ilk.

Finally, if you or anyone else still don’t think that a link between Hide and the Clowns is likely at all, then how about some early foreshadowing instead?

image

Because this is definitely about the current arc + it says “controlled by magicians” right above and Hide…

image

…was strongly associated with being a magician from a long time ago already.

Anyway, you have to understand that I’m not calling Hide a villain.
However, he’s an extremely cunning character about whom we know almost nothing and, most importantly, he was being a thorn in the Washuus’ back according to his own words, which means that strong allies (like the Clowns) could have been useful and thus I’m totally calling him out on having an agenda that isn’t revolving just around Kaneki.

TL;DR I totally suspect Hide of having a link with the Clowns (Uta and Itori specifically), just like I suspect him from possibly being the one who made sure that the Clowns would start shit up the moment they did so in the latest chapter (possibly because he’s a part of Itori’s info network), so that Kaneki would hurry up and leave to find a cure.

And if not him, then it’s Kaneki who doesn’t know that he has a microphone behind his right eye ever since V14. Or it’s Kuramoto.

As always though maybe I’m wrong, but frankly there isn’t a lot of things we know almost nothing about besides V, the Clowns and Hide in the plot, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were all linked one way or another.

I hope it answers your question! Have a nice weekend Anon :))

DID YOU SEE ITORI DID YOU SEE ITORI DID YOU SEE OUR QUEEN AND HER GREAT OUTFIT also Ayato looks more ikemen every chapter LMAO and is Hide doing his ‘hiding something’ gesture…?

I SAW HER I SAW HER! SHE’S SO BEAUTIFUL, I CAN’T RESIST HER…

image

I MEAN THEY’RE ALL BEAUTIFUL REALLY and they’re going to be the death of me soon I’m sure, haaaaaaaaaah! (Ayato sure is right after them in terms of being a very handsome boy too, but I mean, we see him more often)

As for Hide, nah, thanks to the newest omake, we now know that this gesture means he’s thinking intently about something. :)))

Hereeeeeeeeeee! I wonder what this new mask is about, especially because it’s the first half-face mask we see him wearing.

I really Loved Kaneki’s reunion with Hide

kanekikenunot:

I loved everything about it, the way you can feel the nerves as he reaches out to hold Touka after she tells him where he was that it started with Kaneki being so nervous that he reached out to hold onto Touka.

I loved that he needed the reassurance that this wasn’t a dream, that this was real and he was gonna meet his best friend again.

Then I love how they nonchalantly greeted each other after not seeing each other for years and Kaneki thinking he killed him the whole time.

I love that Kaneki smirked at him and how he couldn’t even wait to get up to Hide like a normal person, how he jumped the building and ran to him, as Hide watched him in shock.

But, what I loved most of all is that this wasn’t a sad reunion, which I was really worried it was gonna be tbh. I love that they were just genuinely happy to be each other, and that Hide pointed out that Kaneki was super hyper about this and how Kaneki got embarrassed. I like that Hide poked fun about Kaneki’s neck being a beautiful fugly. Because this is what a good friendship is when your reunited you pick up where you left off and not dwell on what happened while you were away. You can feel the love that they have for each other in this exchange because the whole mood of the chapter it became light hearted.

I also love how Kaneki put together all the little pieces that Hide did behind the scenes when he was Haise and thanked Hide for it. I love how Hide gave the very real sassy response of then pay me for it. I love how natural this felt, and how instead of just going for the deep they goofed off.

This part though had to be my favorite when Kaneki addressed the elephant in the room “ show me your face.”. I love it because Hide tried to joke it off, whats with you and Touka wanting to see my face. I haven’t put my makeup on. Its his last ditch attempt to make Kaneki to stop, and protect him from what he did. But, Kaneki doesn’t go along with it and this time clarifies what he want “Show me what I did”. That has a lot of weight behind it, because it’s obvious Hide doesn’t have any hard feelings, but Kaneki does. He hurt his best friend and to move on he can’t just ignore it, he has to face it. You can tell how much this hurts Hide, his eyes widen cause he knows he can’t back away and his fingers are shaking as he takes it off his mask.

I like how they don’t really comment on it, Kaneki just calls him out for protecting him from the bad he needs to see. I love this reunion because they both needed to be back in each others life. Hide physically avoided Kaneki because he didn’t want him to see what he did. Kaneki mentally avoided thinking about him cause he couldn’t bear the thought of what he did. They were able to face what they have avoided, and were able to stay positive minus a few tears. I love it because it skipped the melodrama and went straight to reigniting their friendship and it was beautiful
