This is probably a bit of an obvious thing, but I think it´s a rather big gesture towards the humans from the ghouls to remove their masks and show their faces. Mask were the things that enabled ghouls to hunt. They concealed the identity of the wearer, so that they would not be found out. Ghouls who´s faces were seen would lose their place in the human society really fast. The concealment of their identities is so strong that Touka tried her best eve to avoid being seen in photographs,
and one of the first things that is ordered for Kaneki when he starts at Anteiku is his own mask. The life of a ghoul is constantly overshadowed by fear that their identity is find out.
So to remove their mask and basically reveal their identities to humans, let alone to investigators, shows volumes of how far the ghouls are willing to go make this plan work.
First of all, this already happened during the Rushima arc
and Miza was more unsettled than she currently is, so for now I’m taking what she said literally: Naki fought “until the end", which is to say until there was no more Oggai (’cause no enemy in sight where they are and Miza is still alive, meaning they must have won their side of the fighting), which is why he’s just completely exhausted and needs to get some sleep.
Of course, I might be wrong and we will know for sure later, but for now I’m holding onto the idea that he’s not dead because of what I said above and because…
He has not yet been confronted to zombies!Gagi & Guge.
So it’s impossible to say for sure for now, but seeing as I’m an optimistic TG fan, I’m vouching for him to be alive (tbh I’m mostly worried about Yomo right now). Have a nice day Anon!
So for once I’m going to make a meta on how things might not be as bad as they look. It’s shocking, I know. There’s something I’ve noticed though, that was revealed this chapter that I have not seen anybody else talking about.
That the narrator who carries such an objective and flourishing style in narration that was almost absent from Tokyo Ghoul with the exception of the end of chapter and beginning of chapter brief segments, is none other than Furuta himself. Not only that but for most of the time, these narrations are completely objective and more descriptive of the situation around him rather than Furuta’s actual thoughts and emotions.
Clickbait title: why is naki going to survive? Find out below.
Hello Anon! Aah, I have so many thoughts and possibilities in mind that I don’t even know where to start. -_- To sum up, I think that Ishida is literally creating many different cliffhangers (for all the different fighting sides) and that we will find out about what happened to each of them when Kaneki comes back with all the food.
You see, Kaneki finally was able to will himself into making a choice…
and sticking by it…
so I believe the whole point is that, by the last chapter of vol 13 (ch142 or 143, me thinks), he will come back only to witness and be astonished by the consequences of this choice.
Anyway, looking at all that’s happening:
we don’t know what happened 6 hours ago to Urie meeting “Hide”
did he accept, did he refuse?
whatever happened to Takeomi and Yoriko?
then we have Hirako & the 0 squad vs Hajime & Ui
we might still get a few pages of this side in the next chapters before it gets its own cliffhanger
we have Yomo vs Mutsuki & Aura
here’s what might happen but honestly I doubt we will see more of this side (and thus if Yomo survived) before Kaneki comes back
we have Ayato supposedly coming back from the depth of the 24th ward
will he be in time or not? if he’s back in time, where will he show up? Saving Touka and Hina? Or maybe Naki’s side?
Naki & Miza (and their respective gangs) vs the Oggai
big cliffhanger for Naki today, similar to Yomo’s during the Cochlea arc really, which is why I think it might not be the end yet for him (but then again, seeing the cliffhanger, I doubt we will see more of him before Kaneki comes back)
Finally we have Suzuya & co vs Touka & Hina & the “weak part of Goat”
which means bad news for everyone who doesn’t have plot armor (aka who isn’t Hina or Touka), but we will likely get more focus on this side until there is a bigger cliffhanger.
So I believe we will discover what happened to all of them when Kaneki comes back, in a similar fashion as with TG ch143, even if I don’t think :Re ch143 will be the very end (unless there is a third part but I doubt it). As I also explained here, Furuta said that he “has to win” this round so that Dragon will then be able to join the stage…
…as “the final enemy” (or “the hero” depending on which side you witness the conflict), which means to me that Furuta intends on wiping out as many of Kaneki’s allies as he can so that Kaneki will go berserk against him for the final showdown.
That’s why Ishida emphasized on Kaneki sticking by his choice and not going back in my opinion, so that he will feel absolutely awful about the consequences and wishing to seek the responsible party to destroy them.
Since you asked, more specifically now, about Touka and Juuzou:
I don’t think that Touka will die
but I also don’t think that Juuzou will try to spare her
even if he somehow did, “Furuta” being there with him won’t leave him much of a choice anyway
I’m not exactly sure of how all of it will happen yet, but since there is still the matter of her complicated pregnancy that is supposed to be a part of the plot [x]…
I tend to think that she will either be made into a hostage by the CCG (and her pregnancy will make her meet Kanou)
or she will somehow be taken in by the Clowns’ gang (since it’s possible Itori could have a role to play towards her pregnancy)
Again, I’m not completely sure yet of how this arc will keep going and what exactly will happen to Touka, but I just don’t see a happy reunion between her and Kaneki at the end of it, simply because it seems the most logical when it comes to the plot.
Finally, about Naki:
I was really upset at first, thinking that it might be the end, but then I thought about it, I even discussed it with other fans who didn’t like the idea of him being dead either, and we concluded that his cliffhanger is too similar to the one Yomo had in Cochlea to think that it’s definitely the end.
Besides, there is still the matter of Kanou supposedly bringing back Gagi and Guge, which is pointless if Naki is not here anymore to witness it so, while I’m less confident where Hooguro and Shousei are concerned, I don’t think Naki (or Miza) will die this time around.
However, I do think it’s impossible for either Miza or Naki to survive the Oggai without someone else’s help and, in my opinion, the options are:
Ayato => we know he is coming back from deep below, and initially I thought he’d save Touka and Hina, but if Touka is to be separated from the rest of Goat, it doesn’t seem logical for Ayato to show up there, especially when we’re all expecting him to. So that’s why I think that maybe Ayato and his group will arrive in time to help Naki and Miza
Nico => that’s @linkspooky‘s idea and hopefully they’ll write a great meta about this, but since ch129 hinted that the Clowns would most likely be involved in the current arc (as we saw with Roma and Rio already) and since Nico did things differently from Furuta before, they might save Naki for old times’ sake (since Nico was fond of Yamori).
I’m aware that some people think Naki activated his Kakuja (like @amon15 told me) but I’m not sure it will be enough to face the Oggai, which is why an exterior help might do the trick and save him and Miza (since I don’t think the point is to have Naki and Miza die, on the contrary, but then again I’m hoping @linkspooky will do a meta about this because they would explain way better than I).
TL;DR this arc is a real mess because it feels like many developments are possible, so I’m sorry if my thoughts don’t make sense. I believe Yomo, Hirako, Touka, Hina, Naki and Miza are/will be safe though (I really hope so), even if I don’t think Kaneki will find Touka to be with the others when he comes back (and there is still the matter of Ayato being on time or not to help either Naki’s side or Touka’s).
As always, the Clowns possibly being involved make it all more complex than it should be, so we will probably need to reach the very end of vol 13 (ch142 or 143 surely) before we can be sure of anything.
Sorry for the long answer, but I hope it helps. Have a nice day Anon!
I couldn’t have summed it better Anon! Yes, I also think it’s what’s going to happen, because the notion of “ghoul gangs” ultimately needs to disappear if coexistence is really to happen.
Remember how Kaneki said “let’s not kill humans otherwise ghouls will always be seen as preying on humans”? Obviously this is war so it’s not exactly something that makes sense to people who are fighting to defend their lives, but deep down he is right and yet Naki & the White Suits…
don’t seem to want to abide by it, precisely because it’s war, but also because it’s how they went on for their entire life so far.
That’s personally why I think that Naki and Miza will lose their respective gangs even if they’ll manage to survive, so that they can learn to live differently, by not thinking that a ghoul’s fate is to die fighting humans or fighting other ghouls.
Naki and the White Suits always clung to Yamori and we know what Yamori represents, so I think this arc is just the time for Naki to grow above it all, so that he’ll have a place in the new world, probably by Miza’s side. Exactly like it happened for Koma and Irimi. 🙂

Hiding under other people’s wings forever, then you’ll end up achieve
nothing, and lose everything
So she raised up her courage, stepped into the shade of the Tree where
could never be shined by sunlight, for she hoped she herself would have enough
strength to help others.
i’ve been thinking a long time about headcanons for them, but yeah, we know so little about them that i don’t have much of a clue where to start :’D i really like them though, i think that ship is adorable!
i think this idea comes from seeing a certain comic on twitter, but i really like the idea of — Miza indulging her romantic fantasies with manga that she’s vaguely ashamed of because it’s meant for younger girls.
the storylines are so simple that she gets the idea to — encourage — Naki by leaving them strewn around his vicinity, and he picks up on them, but everything about them excites and bewilders him. cue various mishaps that finally end with Naki getting very excited about white day — which Miza herself gets excited about until she realizes that Naki seems really only into it because of his white suits — and then she is shocked once more when Naki presents her with a box that contains…….something.
“It’s chocolate!” Naki says excitedly, and Miza feels a little tears, because the……thing is so crudely made that it’s clear Naki has somehow created this thing himself. but then her tears well just a little more when she realizes that Naki is watching her with extreme anticipation, and so she eats as he watches on excitedly, swallowing every bit of it.
she….she can do this. after all, aren’t these feelings…aren’t these feelings supposed to come…with some measure of endurance, with a good handful of accepting even those things that are unpalatable, for the sake of the one that…is sort of special to you? and just look — Naki is looking at her so happily — he’s practically beside himself with delight.
“That’s so amazing! So it’s true after all huh, ghouls can eat this stuff! I had no idea!”
before Miza can reply he thumbs away a little of the chocolate left in the corner of her lips and sticks it into his own mouth. they stare at each other with astoishment, and Naki turns away to spit and gag violently.
