↳ “you’re so beautiful when you hate the world.” // “i don’t hate you.” // “i don’t hate you too.”

i love how ty lee is running like a normal person would but meANWHILE MAI IS DOING THE FUCKING NARUTO RUN (aka the v goose run)
but like. it’s even funnier when you remember how mai fights. it’s all in wrist movements. IMAGINE IF MAI RAN LIKE A NORMAL PERSON WITH HER ARMS SWINGING ABOUT. KNIVES WOULD BE FLYING EVERYWHERE LIKE CAN YOU IMAGINE
imagine little mai realizing this. imagine little mai training herself to do the naruto run so that knives wouldn’t go flying everywhere. imagine little mai showing off to little ty lee and teaching her how to do it. imagine little azula going “wtf???” when she sees little mai and ty lee just running around doing the naruto run
ozai’s angels off 2 capture the avatar
Chin and side-eye game so strong it spanned 3 generations
I love how Mai’s defining characteristic is her apathy, when the most dangerous thing about her is how she will do ANYTHING for the people she cares about. We get two clear examples of this: the first being her love of Zuko during the show, and the second being her love for her brother Tom Tom throughout the comics.
When we first meet Mai we see her dying of boredom in Omashu, and relatively (at least visibly) unconcerned with what’s happening around her. This is why Azula recruits her, because she thinks that Mai won’t care enough about anything to ever betray her. This and her knife skills. Mai is easy to control. Until she isn’t. Once Zuko has a chance to explain himself to her in ‘The Boiling Rock’, Mai knows that he didn’t betray her so she refuses to betray him. Based on her surprise at Ty Lee chi blocking Azula, we know that she stood by her decision to defend Zuko and was willing to die for it. She cared about him and would do anything to save him, consequences be damned. Much to the shock of everyone around her.
This happens again throughout the comics in regards to her brother Tom Tom, especially in ‘Smoke and Shadow’. In ‘Rebound’ Mai fights off the New Ozai society, including her father, to prevent them from indoctrinating her brother. In ‘Smoke and Shadow’ she manipulates Kei Lo in order to keep an eye on the New Ozai society so that she can protect both Zuko and Tom Tom. Once her brother is taken, she enlists all the help she can get (both the fire lord and the avatar) in order to get him back. To the point where she is willing to lie to the fire lord and commit treason in order to facilitate finding her brother. Zuko of all people should know how far she is willing to go to protect people.
Despite all this, both characters and readers alike often define Mai as ‘that girl who doesn’t care’. But I guess you don’t always know people as well as you think you do.
//This is just gorgeous.. ❤
