initially I thought Levi’s reaction to Mikasa’s statement was one of surprise, but now with chapter 69 out I think it’s one of recognition.
Levi sees himself in Mikasa, and it’s not just here. It’s also when Dimo Reeves points out Mikasa’s incredible strength.
and when he recognizes the same bloodlust and anger Mikasa portrays after Eren is abducted that he felt after the deaths of Farlan and Isabel
The sheer amount of similarites between the two of them frightens Levi, but I also think it intrigues him and gives him a sense of protectiveness towards Mikasa. And this combined with the fact that Mikasa is possibly one of his last (very) distant family members, he’ll want to protect her even more.
Okay I’m so
hyped to find out what exactly this means.
Calling
them a “Sub-product of the Titan science” would probably mean, that they have
been there from the start. Right when Ymir first made that pact and became a
Titan, the Ackerman family somehow came into existence, or was given a certain
power. Now we know that they are immune to the power of the progenitor Titan,
to influence people’s memories, but other families, like the Asians were too.
So, there
has to be something else that relates the Ackerman’s to the Titan power. After all even Zeke is fucking terrified of them, but considering his last encounter with Levi that’s no surprise. We
know that both Mikasa and Levi are immensely and perhaps inhumanely strong.
They had a moment when they were younger, when they felt like a power awakened
inside of them. Same goes for Kenny and I bet every other Ackerman there was.
It didn’t seem like Mikasa’s father had such powers though, considering how
easily he got killed. I mean it could be that he had them, but we don’t know.
So, I guess it is possible to not awaken this power. For Mikasa and Levi it
happened when they were fighting and in mortal danger. If Mikasa hadn’t
awakened her powers she and Eren likely would have died. Thus the “Ackerman
power” only gets activated when it is needed. Back in the day the Ackermans
used to be the King’s right hand and ensured humanity’s survival. And maybe
that is exactly the reason they have these powers. They protect humanity from
the Titans. But when the First King Reiss assumed power he didn’t want the
people to be free of the Titans. He persecuted the Ackermans and the other
clans and decided to make everyone else forget that there were ever other
humans beyond the walls.
We know
there is still one Titan left, that we haven’t seen yet. So, what if that is
the Ackerman Power is the remaining Titan? Like of course it’s different from the
other Titan Shifters, because in this case the power is inherited by a whole
family, but it is a possibility. There could also be differences in the way
these powers manifest themselves. Zeke for example has other powers than the
Beast Titans before him and maybe that is similar for the Ackermans.
I mean it’s just a theory, but after this
chapter it seems like a possibility. And it would make Levi and Mikasa even more badass.

As mentioned in the previous partial translation I posted a few days ago, the full text of this Levi interview (Originally in Japanese) was not available until @dragonfly789 brought the Chinese translation to my attention a few days ago. Part 2 is still to come 🙂
Note: This interview was originally released in 2016, prior to the Survey Corps returning to Wall Maria and encountering Reiner/Bertholt/Zeke. Hence, it is not current in terms of the recent chapters.

— He is Captain Levi Ackerman.
This surname, which became known to the public during the uprising, also illustrates a part of humanity’s history.
As someone who carries both the past and the future on his shoulders, what is he focused on now?
With this in mind, we conducted yet another interview with him.
