Hey! ^^ I think real Ciel was talking to Sebastian when he said these words because he was addressing him before in that scene:
But maybe he really didn’t mean that he ate his soul but rather what happened to the ring, especially since there’s a focus on the ring after real Ciel said these words.
We know that the ring seems really important to the twin. It could calm him down when he was a kid after being so desperate about our Ciel’s plans for his future; he held on to the ring during their whole captivity and swallowed it so no one could get it; and the first message he left for our Ciel when he returned was about the ring, as well:
So maybe the fact that Sebastian and our Ciel got the ring out of real Ciel’s body enrages the twin even more than Sebastian eating his soul. Or at least he may not only talk about his soul but also about the ring when he says “How dare you do that to me that day”. So the twin could have probably meant both – our Ciel and Sebastian – but I think he rather meant to address Sebastian in that scene.
Hi! I haven’t read 138 so everything I tell you is based on what I read in passing from other blogs haha.
That’s an interesting theory you have! It’d make sense if the cloaked figure (a demon, shinigami, etc.) reached the body in time and vored consumed it to prevent farther damage. I personally don’t think that’s the case because RC would already be dead at that point- all the person could do was prevent more decay and they could do that by freezing him, etc.
But I like your theory and would be pleasantly surprised if it was the case 🙂
Hi Anon! Nah, I wouldn’t call this a plot hole. You’re right, Seb did mention it in ch137…
buuut it totally went past our!Ciel’s head because he rather focused on what Seb said about how he “sacrificed his brother”:
In other words, Seb did mention it ahead but Ciel probably didn’t realize what the demon said because all he could think about was “what a horrible human being he was to have sacrificed his own brother’s soul”.
That’s why…
Seb’s friendly reminder came as a shock in ch138 instead, in my opinion.
While rereading Campania arc, I was just thinking how scared and devastated OC must have been when he witnessed how Lizzie was surrounded by zombies and it seemed like she’s about to be killed.
Three years ago, he witnessed how his twin brother was killed right before his eyes. He was trapped in the cage and no matter how much he screamed, he couldn’t do anything to save him. He could only witness his brother’s painful death.
And three years later, that traumatic event was about to happen again: Right in front of him, there’s Lizzy, the person he cares for a lot, and she’s in an extremely desperate situation. This time OC was not trapped in a cage, but his ankle was sprained, so he couldn’t move. So this time, too, he was not able to save the person.
How devastated OC must have been to experience this situation for a second time? How big his fear must have been to lose an important person in his life before his very eyes again?
So yeah, if it hadn’t been for Lizzie’s sword skills and her determination to protect OC, this situation could have ended in a yet another big trauma for OC (as if he didn’t already go through enough traumas in his life) and OC would have most probably blamed himself if Lizzy had died. So kudos to Lizzy for crushing OC’s biggest fears and saving him – physically and mentally.
Ch 137 pg 5 – a cult member shouts, “We’ve finally done it!!”
I’m probably the only one who thinks this way, but this line was kind of a big deal for me. This line confirms that this group has never summoned a demon before.
It’s a big deal for me because for a long time I’ve wondered, “What did the cult think was going to happen?”
I see two possibilities:
1 – They could have thought they were really going to summon a demon. It seems a little ridiculous, because we know from Sebastian’s explanations to our Ciel that the cult’s summoning method was wrong, but they weren’t that far off.
There really is a demon. He really does require a sacrifice to be summoned. They had that much right.
For all we as readers knew, this cult could have summoned demons before. I actually would have found that a bit comforting…
2 – Because the other option is that they didn’t have any real reason to think it would work, which makes their expectations all the creepier.
If this group has never summoned a demon before, but this isn’t their first time trying … what was going to happen after they tried?!
If they tried before and they keep trying, maybe some of them were earnestly hoping it would work this time, but probably most of them didn’t seriously think it was going to happen. Probably most of them were in it for other reasons.
Probably most of them just wanted to see these children horrifically murdered.
Nope, the original Japanese line is exactly the same!
君と同じ顔をした僕が – “I, who has the same face as yours,”
君の魂と引き換えに – “in exchange for your soul”
君が願った君になる – “will become “you” who you wanted to be.”
As for the question whether it was for RC’s sake or for OC’s own sake, at first glance OC’s decision in the latest chapter may seem self-sacrificing, however, if you really think about it, it’s actually not! In fact, it was a selfish decision OC made for himself because RC never asked his little brother to avenge him nor to succeed his wish after his death. Becoming “Ciel” was OC’s own idea he himself came up with, his own decision – something no one asked him to do. Therefore, claiming “it was for RC” would be nothing but “selfishness of the survivors / luxury of the living” – as stated by OC himself in ch8:
And this is precisely what I love about OC so much! He fully knows what he’s doing and takes full responsibility for his own actions. He doesn’t pass the buck by using the excuse “But I did all this for you!!!!!”.
I totally agree, that’s why you can see a big difference in our!Ciel’s speech when it comes to revenge throughout the years. Initially he said…
…which might be interpreted as “I want revenge because the Ciel I became would have wanted it”, but then in ch95 he also said…
and I really think he didn’t lie in this part of the chapter.
That’s why confronting his brother in this arc is important in my opinion, because the current “Earl Ciel Phantomhive” became more about him than about his brother, despite the initial attempt to make it all about his brother. Just my take on it, tho.
