The yin and yang of Avatar: The Last Airbender ships

lj-writes:

I’ve seen the balance of yin and yang being used to support the Katara/Zuko (Zutara) ship, and it’s honestly so hilarious?

I mean let’s set aside the fact that in my culture yin and yang in the context of a man and a woman means, well, sex. Not even in a serious sense, more like a parody of how your 96-year-old grandfather might pressure you and your partner to give him great-grandchildren.

I mean, the sexual innuendo aspect is the least of my objections to fandom’s misuse of yin and yang, but I thought I’d put it out there because you can imagine how I feel when I read all this stuff being discussed in deadly earnest and all I can think is “archaic sex joke.”

Like I said, though, let’s set the sexual connotations aside and just look at yin and yang in the original, philosophical sense. Even here fandom gets it wrong when it comes to Zutara. Let me explain why Zutara is not the yin-yang ship, Mai/Zuko (Maiko) and Aang/Katara (Kataang) are.

So about the ages of the cloudbabies:

Tenzin seems a few months old and Kya between 2 and 4 years old here. Bumi looks like he could be as old as 14 to me, particularly if we compare him to other kids in the show (he seems older than Aang was at the end of ATLA and perhaps even Kai in Book 4 – was he just awkwardly tall?). I think I remember one of the Bryke saying he was entering his awkward stage or something, so I’d say 10 is the very minimum.

Tenzin was born when Aang was 32. So if Bumi is 10-14 in the photo, it means Aang would have had him when he was somewhere between 18 (!!!) (*) and 22 years old. Tenzin (kinda) remembers playing with Bumi when he was little though (and it’s hard to believe he was nearly 70 in LoK Book 4), so a 10-12 years age difference may be more likely than a 14 years one?

Headcanon timeline:
107/8 AG: Bumi is born. Katara is 22/23, Aang 20/21.
116 AG: Kya is born. Katara is 31, Aang 29, Bumi 9/8.
119 AG: Tenzin is born. Katara is 34, Aang 32, Bumi 12/11 and Kya 3.

(*) I actually don’t think it’s impossible for Aang (and Katara) to have Bumi this young:

Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin: Analysis

lokgifsandmusings:

Throughout the Legend of Korra, the myth of the “idealized family” is challenged and torn-down, from Hiroshi secretly working with the Equalists, to the Beifong’s exceedingly complicated dynamics. Yet Katara and Aang’s rather traditional, nuclear family particularly stands out. Going into the series, I think it wouldn’t have been shocking for anyone to say “Toph would be a really weird mother.” But Aang and Katara felt like two characters who could develop into pretty great parents. Learning that things were less than rosey for their children was jarring. This is an attempt to unpack and explore the sibling dynamics of Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin.  For the purposes of this essay, I’ll be referring to their family as “The Kataangs” (why can’t more people have last names). I felt it would constructive to divide this essay by the individuals. For the purposes of our understanding, in Books 2 and 3, when these guys mostly interact, Tenzin is 52, and based on semi-canonical sources, that puts Kya at 55/56 and Bumi at 62.
