Something that has been therorized for a long time is why the characters Tsukiyama, Hide, and Touka were picked to be the aces along with Kaneki in the card deck Ishida made years ago. Well in light of the recent chapters I’m starting to get an idea of the why. To start with I’m gonna do the obvious Kaneki
who was the ace of hearts which symbolizes the center of everything along with love and knowledge, fortune telling and joy. He is quiet literally the center that the other aces satellite around which really isn’t a bad thing just symbolic. All the other aces make decision and take action that in many ways helps and benefits Kaneki. Yet what made me really start thinking about this connection to the recent chapters is that of Kaneki’s flaws. Kaneki has three major flaws one of which is his lack of taking action towards his goals, his indecisiveness, and his inability to rely on others. So this got me thinking of the aces are the ones who are going to make him see these flaws and change it. I’m going to start with Touka as she has already made a big impact with Kaneki in that way.
The clubs represent will, happiness, and luck, which fits Touka in that she is a character with the strongest will, as well as she is the source of Kaneki’s happiness at the moment, and up until this point she has been a bit lucky. She also has been pushing Kaneki to making decisions just by leading by example, when she decided to put Kaneki and her family before Yoriko. Then there is Tsukiyama who is shown with the Ace of Diamonds.
The diamonds is symbolic of wealth, courage, and annoyance. Which fits his character with Kaneki where he was his bank and was trying to encourage him to take action against the CCG but as time went on and Kaneki wouldn’t listen he had become more annoyed. Which makes me think this will be the finale straw in which Tsukiyama’s point will finally get across.
Then there is Hide who is on the ace of spades.
The ace of spades is symbolic of death, intelligence, and action. Which fits because Kaneki believes he died, he is considered too smart for his own good, and he has taken action as scarecrow to expose the Washuu. I think he is gonna show up to help Kaneki soon and help him realize he needs tiredly on others to succeed.
I believe that the aces where chosen as the people who will help Kaneki become the man he needs to be to win.
Hello, anon! Unfortunately, none of us really know why Undertaker or the other Shinigami committed suicide. Aside from a brief reference by Sascha to their human life, none of them have ever given their individual reasons or circumstances behind it… so I can’t really speculate because there’s no information. Some fans have tried to link clues in the portraits in chapter 105 and the cover page of 106 to Shinigami we know, but I’m a little hesitant to decide on any of them being references to any one character. Sorry that that’s such a non-answer but I really don’t know!
About Undertaker being an old Shinigami compared to the others… this is something I definitely agree with. Considering how seasoned he is at fighting, his ability to disguise himself so well and evade capture, plus his overall demeanor towards other Shinigami and demons leads me to believe that he’s been around for quite some time. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s several hundred years old if not a thousand. Again, some fans like to take the Will the Grim Reaper OVA in the anime as a reference to how old some of the others are, and while it isn’t strictly manga canon I do lean towards it being accurate.
I can tell you that I totally reject the idea of him being a legendary Shinigami like he was in the anime, though! Grell and Ron didn’t recognize him and William only received word of a violator after the Campania sunk, when he came to pick them up. I like the idea of him having been someone who worked dutifully in collections and never really made waves (haha) up until the point that he decided to desert. That’s purely speculation on my part though, and with Othello’s presence in the latest story arc there’s a good possibility that we’ll find out more about Undertaker’s past through him. Or at least, I’m crossing my fingers for it!

Tanaka has always known from the very first day that our Ciel is not the oldest twin. He was not fooled by him; he is helping him! You can see this if you read kuroshitsuji in Japanese and I’ll show this to you.
First of all I would like to talk about the term “Bocchan”. It is translated as “young master” but for me the word “Bocchan” in Japanese denotes much more affection towards the little master than the formal “young master”.
Reading some chapters in Japanese I noticed that Tanaka addresses the true Ciel as “Ciel sama” (Lord Ciel) showing respect for him as the heir and that he uses the term bocchan just for our Ciel. (A less formal and somewhat more affectionate term).
In the same way, I realized that the true Ciel calls Tanaka only by his first name, but our Ciel calls him “Jiya” wich can be translated as Grandpa (again a term that shows affection and closeness to the servant).
Back in that day I believe the two boys were present in this scene. The real Ciel calls Tanaka by his name and the old butler tells “Lord Ciel” to escape. Tanaka is attacked and falls over this boy ( real Ciel) while a hand grabs the other boy.
During the first night in the mansion alone with Sebastian our Ciel still refers to Tanaka as “Jiya”.
Thanks to that BoC side story we saw that Our Ciel calls him “Jiya” since when he was very young.
And Tanaka seems to be happy with this.
And here is the scene of the reunion between our Ciel and Tanaka at the hospital. Tanaka falls to his knees and calls the boy “Bocchan” and our Ciel runs to him calling him “Jiya”. There are no mistakes. Tanaka recognized him as his dear “Bocchan”.
It particularly warms my heart to know that our Ciel received a hug from someone dear to him and that this person really knew it was him and not the heir.
Remembering that it was thanks to Tanaka that Sebastian started to call his master “Bocchan” and so he is called by Finny, Bard and Meirin.
And our Ciel never demanded of them the use of “ciel sama” (lord Ciel) but accepted the affectionate “Bocchan”.
One of the major discoveries that we learned about Kaneki during V14 is that Kaneki is a very selfish man pretending to be selfless. Kaneki throughout the original ghoul was only trying to protect Anteiku and be kind because he didn’t want to be alone. Kaneki became this “self scraficing savior” because of a will to die and to live on in people’s memories as a savior so there is an emotional reaction from those he knew.
Yet, we learned un :re during Kaneki’s fight with Arima that he was pretty much lost all the will to live after all he’s been through. But during his fight he realized one thing
He wants to live for the opportunities to meet people and finally be told the things he’s always wished for. Kaneki realizes how much he wants to live, and then one of those people he wants to live for kills himself in front of him, and in so many words tells him all the words he wanted to hear.
Kaneki from a young age was neglected of love and someone who cared for him, his mother neglected and abused him and he’s been searching for parental figures in his life. Hence why anyone who holds on this parental pedestal has hurt him to some degree. From his biological mother, to Rize, to Yamori, to Arima, and even Akira has hurt him. Yet, Arima did something that nobody else did he told him that he was sorry for leaving him behind because he does care for him. Which was something Kaneki always wanted to here and many ways gave him closure with not just Arima but with his mother. We know that this hurt Kaneki deeply as he slept for almost a month after the incident represented by the fact that everyone is commenting on him being awake as well as him not knowing that Koma and Irimi were working in :re
However, Kaneki is able to move on because Arima gave him a purpose
Arima wants him to fix the issue that made it possible for Arima to have had to suffer in his life, the issue with V. Yet, Kaneki has no other desire to do it, other than because Arima asked him to, which is why Seidou called him out for not caring about the coexistence of ghoul and humans
Kaneki is doing it because at the moment this is the only thing he has to live for because even with it he’s empty. Yet, it’s because of him being empty he needs something to make it worth living
Kaneki states that sometimes you just need something to hold onto to keep you from floating away. Which is why he can’t take away Seidou’s cross, because he knows it’s the only thing keeping him alive, which is the guilt of what he has done and how much he cares for Akira and Amon. Kaneki is using being king as an excuse to live, which is both dangerous to his mental health, as well as him repeating the same character cycle of part one. I think this is because while Tokyo Ghoul is a story about supernatural creatures, Ishida is using Kaneki to show what depression is like. Ishida is trying to give this message of living through the pain, and trying to find meaning to your life. He is giving Kaneki a simple and sweet one “to live for others” but I think he’s trying to show that it isn’t the best method. Kaneki all of :re has been on this downwards spiral of repeating events from part 1 as the story is paralleling more than ever right know, as there are many hints to :re being raided. I think this is because until Kaneki realizes that he has to live for himself, he’s going to have to repeat his pain until he learns it. Thats why if this arc becomes the :re raid, I think it’s going to be the time that Kaneki finally learns to care about himself, because look at all the relationships he’s built of people who care about him and love him, he’s just been to blind in his own self destruction to notice.
I think that it’s pretty clear that while, he might not want coexistence himself his search for meaning to live he will be able to realize why what he was been doing is so important. I feel like Kaneki finding his will to live, will create in return find a way for coexistance, but thats not the true meaning of this story. I think if anything Tokyo Ghoul:re is going to be story where Kaneki takes his own life back for himself instead of others.
