For a long time I really thought that Worick had betrayed Alex and Nicolas because he didn’t want to die in the chaos that Gina said would hit the town (since he’s a normal guy) but you’re probably right when you say it goes deeper than that. I hope so because I loved his character and I don’t want to start hating him.

Hey Anon 🙂 Ah, well, I think Worick is one of the most complex characters of Gangsta. to be very honest with you, so doubting him, especially after what he did, is natural (and probably what Sensei was going for).

However, there was only one real betrayal so far and it was Daniel Monroe’s. Uranos Corsica doesn’t count, at least not for me: we always could guess he was shady since it was said from the beginning that he hated the Twilights.

But personally I could never doubt Worick (he’s my son and I will fight against everyone if I have to, just like Georgina said men and women used to fight over him), at least I didn’t till now because we’re talking about this man:

image
image

Like, I know we know nothing about Alex yet: we don’t know why she remembers Nicolas from obviously before ch1, why Worick wanted to save her in the first place (there is probably a reason) but still, he extended a hand towards her, he gave her shelter and even a way out, so no way is he a total asshole who betrayed her and Nico.

Besides, Nico obviously still believes in his partner

image

so even less reason to think Worick did what he did to follow in Monroe’s footsteps.

…Not to ramble, but to make a final point about why I don’t think Worick could ever become a full villain in the story: I remember checking the tags a while ago and I saw a post that said that Uranos Corsica’s and Daniel Monroe’s backstabbing was Sensei’s way to denounce white supremacy.

As it is, I don’t entirely agree (gotta be careful with that kind of concept), because Loretta and Gina are white too, but I think the point the person was trying to make was overall valid: Sensei does add all kinds of representation as much as she can and that’s amazing.

So yeah, two powerful white guys stabbed everyone in the back for their own interests, destroying the fragile balance of Ergastulum and it’s indeed up to the lesbian leader of a mercenary guild

image

and a young girl trying to uphold her father’s legacy

image
image

to try and stabilize things as much as they can.

And to help them? The Benriya, composed of a disabled swordsman of mixed Asian-White origin, a black woman suffering from PTSD because of her days as a drugged prostitute and, since I don’t believe Worick betrayed them, a gigolo aka a man who prostitutes himself (and who has tons of issues to solve).

image
image

You see, Worick fits the same pattern as Loretta, Gina, Nico and Alex

(I didn’t mention slightly more minor characters like Delico, Chad, Nina and Theo, but you get the point): yes he’s white, but he’s not of the same brand as Uranos Corsica and Daniel Monroe, so he too will be used as a pawn to play against them and the rest of the government.

That’s a little simplifying things, since I’m not even sure I really trust Gina, but you get the idea.

And honestly if Worick’s going to reach for the government through using the Corsica family, then he’d better act the hell out of everything and make even us readers doubt, eh? 🙂

Eventually though, I’m pretty sure that, just like how Worick decided to try and “get in the way” for the sake of others, he’ll need to be saved too, hopefully by Nico and Alex who will believe in him till the end.

image

My son is a good man (or well, maybe not good, but not exactly an asshole to the people he cares about), so please don’t hate him. :))

Thanks for passing by Anon and have a nice weekend!

About Gangsta I’m still emotionally damaged about Connie and Marco .I mean ,I know this is isn’t some fluffy shoujo but still the whole thing really hit home .Part of me was glad they at least died together and no one was left behind .

Hey Anon! And yeah, I feel you. :/ Personally I really realized that there would be no hope for a large part of the cast when both of them died.

I mean, Doug was one thing: he was a minor villain for a few chapters but then he turned out to be a sweet kid and his death was used to introduce the return of the Destroyer. So I wasn’t particularly sad, although I felt bad for Galahad.

Connie and Marco though… Well, Connie was one of Alex’s rare friends and, I won’t lie, after the way her parents died, until the last moment I thought maybe Sensei would allow her to survive if just for her grandmother’s sake, who lost so many loved ones.

As for Marco, he was one of Loretta’s right-hand men, a strong support and a protector, and his death weakens both her position but also her as a person: she’s young but she’s already carrying a lot on her shoulder and now she lost one of the two most important men in her life. ://

image

I think the reason Connie and Marco dying hit so hard is also because of what they represent, as a couple: they fell in love despite that horrible past between them. And it was one of the few examples that, yes, Ergastulum is a horrible place but, at the same time, there can still be hope if you know where to look.

And Sensei killed that. Literally.

That’s kind of why I ended up realizing that I shouldn’t hope so much for pretty much anyone in the cast and a few chapters later, as you know, we had that reveal about Nina probably “having an expiration date” as Theo’s research. T_T

The only consolation I find in all that happened is, exactly like you, that…

image

at least they died together yeah, and also Connie managed to pull a fast one on Beretta and Striker.

Speaking of which, it really feels unfair that Striker and Beretta are still alive after all that they did to them, even if I strongly suspect that the whole point was so that Sensei could show us that even them are treated like the worst shit ever by the Corsica family (who still used them for their plans):

image
image

And I’ll bet you that the point is to reinforce that the Twilights and related experiments like Erika, Striker, Beretta, etc really have the worst fate.

Ultimately it ties with what Worick is trying to do, so it fits with why Connie and Marco (who found solace in each other) had to die while Striker (who always was treated like shit) survived, even if it still hurts a lot because everyone loved Marco and Connie.

Gangsta. is really a harsh series, but at the same time it forces the reader to enjoy all the simple and nice moments we sometimes are given, because we know it’s not going to last and the situation can always go

downhill

even more.

Like, I remember when Nico took Nina to see Alex sing that one time, to cheer her up because bad stuff had happened: when I read this part the first time, I was like “if only Worick could be here too” but now I’m just glad it happened at all, considering the even bigger shitstorm that hit right after. T_T

Anyway, Anon, I think that even if they died, Marco and Connie are still going to be a part of the story, which is comforting me a little too. The memory of them will haunt the ones who loved them and they won’t be forgotten. And there still is the mystery of that key…

image

so they’re bound to be relevant again!

Thanks for passing by Anon, I wish you a great weekend! :33

What ARE the few things you noticed about Worick?

midnight-in-town:

Hahahah, a curious Anon who reads tags appeared! xDD

So about Worick, I personally linked stuff together only recently because the last time I read the whole manga was when the hiatus was just announced, so forgive me if this is not new for you.

image

First, about the “storage” bit: I was confused as hell for a long time, thinking that maybe it had to do with the Arcangelo family but in fact, “storage” is the name given to Worick’s special ability:

image

And Chad also said on the subject that…

image
image

it was the reason the Handymen were better off as a neutral party, even if Daniel Monroe took them in for a while in the past and even recommended him to Uranos Corsica, precisely as Worick went to see Georgiana.

image
image

Secondly, about Worick’s goal and joining the Corsica family, after the violent killing of Miles: in the first place, there isn’t much doubt that Monroe probably knows about Worick’s ambivalence towards Twilights due to what Nicolas did to his family, hence why he warned Uranos just as Worick was going to Georgiana.

However, the difference is that Worick never was as radical as Monroe in his alleged dislike of the Twilights and, as a result, he always chose to do what was necessary to make sure that a war would be avoided (for example, ch11):

image

(…to which Nico ended up thinking that “no matter how determined the rest of you are, we Twilights won’t be able to survive”, which is frankly pretty depressing but fitting the currently crazy situation).

So personally, I don’t think that Worick wants to join the Corsica family because he doesn’t want to die a dog’s death along with most Twilights. Rather, he knows that without what Daniel Monroe used to represent, this city will go back to being the hell it once was and that’s why…

image
image

…he has to “get in the way”.

Considering how mysterious Uranos Corsica still is at this point, besides his hatred of the Twilights and the fact he’s the one who unleashed the third Destroyer on Ergastulum, right now it’s a bit hard to be sure of why Monroe stated that Worick could “immensely help him”.

However, I’m wondering if the reason might not be that both Worick and Uranos have issues regarding how the governement is taking care of the Twilight “problem”:

image

…Uranos, because something apparently happened to his family and he holds the Twilights (as well as the government who doesn’t deal properly with them?) accountable, and Worick because of his own ambivalence towards the Twilights (ch28) and how he knows they’re unfairly treated.

Worick once said to Delico that he hated his kind, which might not be a complete lie, but at the same time…

image
image
image

So Worick might not be able to pretend that he is as compliant as Loretta towards all Twilights, but he’s definitely not like Daniel Monroe either:

image

…meaning that “getting in the way” (ch39) of the Corsica family/the government is probably the same as doing it for the Twilights’ sake, now that Monroe betrayed them all.

TL;DR he definitely did not become a bad guy (not that anyone believed that, I hope), but in Ergastulum, either you step up your game to save yourself and the few people you care about if you have the ability for it, or you die in the gutter.

That’s my current conclusion for Worick. I hope it answers your question :3

Have a nice day Anon!

fuckyeahgangsta:

I’m sure you all knew this post was coming. First off, let us apologise for taking so long to respond to questions regarding Kohske’s now rather viral comments on Twitter on the subject the overseas piracy of her works. Kiel and I live the world apart (I’m Down Under and he’s in the US) and we both have mounting personal obligations that don’t allow us as much time to post these days. This is a very important matter, though, and we absolutely have opinions on the issue – especially with the backlash Kohske has been receiving. Please read on.

Kohske has frequently stated in the past (in both Japanese and, to the best of her ability, in English) that she doesn’t want her work shared illegally through scans or scanlations because of the impact it has on her earnings. This time her plea, in English (above), went viral and has been met with some considerable nastiness. Comments telling her she’s only complaining because her work is bad and doesn’t sell (it’s consistently a best seller for Shinchosha and has been for years), that she took a huge hiatus and therefore doesn’t care about her series anyway (she suffers from a chronic autoimmune disorder and has been very open about how it continues to affect the status of the series and her life in general), right through to the suggestion that it is only her responsibility to ensure international publishers do the right thing by her title (if you’ve had experience in the publishing field, particularly when dealing with foreign releases, you’ll know how incredibly difficult it is to exercise any manner of control over your work when two publishing houses have all the power in the matter – Kohske has touched on this in the past as well). And, of course, the usual “if you don’t like it, then don’t be a mangaka”, and so on. Most of these comments seem to have come not from fans of the series or of Kohske, but from people who followed links to the tweets seeking an argument on the topic.

But even if one doesn’t agree with Kohske’s personal stance on scanlations, the abusive messages she has received are vile.

No artist should be bombarded with harassment
or lectured like a child for simply expressing the desire that their work be consumed legally.

Others noted on the massive gap between the legal release of GANGSTA. in English (and some other languages) and the legal Japanese release of the title. The most recent volume won’t be available in English from Viz until next year, and the main story is now several chapters ahead. Fans looking to enjoy these most recent chapters in English have no legal options to turn to yet. Such a gap is fairly common and by no means limited to GANGSTA., however, in this day and age where titles in,
for instance,

powerhouse publications like Jump come out the same day in multiple languages, fans are struggling with releases for series that don’t “keep up.”

If fans genuinely want to read legally available chapters of GANGSTA. in English without having to wait for a volume release, we need to let the companies involved know. Viz Media is unlikely to pursue something as time-consuming and expensive as fast digital releases for a series like GANGSTA. (which is from a smaller publisher and not with the same audience or sales league as, once again, much larger publications) unless people are vocal about wanting it. Companies are willing to investigate ways of getting you to pay for titles if they know they’re viable – so they need to know it’s viable. Tell them you want digital releases of GANGSTA., be it in an email, a tweet, a hashtag, a letter, whatever works for you. (Our master licensing post is always available if you’re unsure who publishes GANGSTA. in your country.)

Does that mean they’ll start doing it? No, there’s no guarantee they’ll listen, but the best way to get what we want as consumers is to be vocal and consistent about the content we love and want to purchase. It was the “pre-built fanbase” that GANGSTA. had at the time of its licensing that helped Viz market it initially –
we’re all still here and we still love the series, so
why not let them know?

As for whether or not it’s moral to consume scanlations when an artist has explicitly asked you not to do so, well,
at the end of the day

that really is down to each of us as readers. All Kiel and I can say is that we respect and support Kohske’s wishes on this issue and hope those reading this will do the same. Please purchase legal copies of her work when possible and let Kohske know that her appeals to manga fans (especially this one) are not in vain. – FYG

PS: For those newer to this community, please note that we have a list of trustworthy stores that supply Viz’s English volume releases, and our Monthly Comic Bunch posts generally include shopping links.

ishida-why:

The reason why I bought the TG manga was not just because I wanted to own a story I love, I also wanted to support the person who caused that I had a good time. Ishida had been then of course luckier than a lot of other mangakas because his story got so popular that it probably didn’t matter after a while if everyone buys the manga. But not so well known mangakas will suffer because of scanlations. While my post won’t change anything at all, I just don’t understand why people insult an author for stuff like that. He has the right to complain if this causes that he has not enough income because of not being so well known.

Like I admit, if I would buy every series I read on the internet then I would be poor now, but exactly for this reason I feel a bit guilty. Like the people who read scanlations should be grateful for being able to read it at all and feel a bit guilty for not supporting the person who causes that they have fun instead of being rude.

(sorry for re-reblogging) I don’t know what happened, if Koshke sensei is the one who got criticized or if Ishida-sensei was also hit by something similar lately, but anyway: even tho’ it’s a form of enjoyment for us, it’s a way to make a living for them.

Of course, not everything is released in every language or country (or the official translation in your language is not always the best, I speak as a first hand witness for several French official translations which are horrid), but English remains the language in which most series are translated across the internet and that’s how they are made illegally available.

So an alternative, I find in general less expensive or taking up space than owning a material copy in English/Japanese/your language, would be to buy the Japanese digital version: it’s a way to support an author + you can still keep up with the English illegal releases across the internet and understand what’s going on.

It gets more and more expensive the more series you enjoy, I know, but try to do this as much as you can or for the series you really are looking forward to every release: again it’s how these people whose work we read can make a living.

And if you can’t for financial reasons, just please simply be grateful.

I have a question about Gangsta and I’m interested with trying. I see you read it but did you watch the anime? Can starting with the anime be okay for trying the story? Thanks for helping.

Hi there Anon! Yup, I watched the Gangsta. anime and I’m keeping up with the manga on a regular basis (the chapters are released monthly, but Kohske-sensei has a few health-related issues so we don’t always get content). Here’s my tag for it.

image

I’m personally really fond of it, but it is Seinen (i.e targeting adult demographics) and addressing hardcore themes like prostitution, drugs, mafia and civil war, so beware the many trigger warnings because it doesn’t have to be for everyone.

I can’t speak of your personal tolerance to such subjects though, so you’ll have to read a summary and give it a try to see if that’s something you may want to watch/read or not, knowing that the anime covers most of the content from ch1 to ch28 in one cour. Here’s also a “why you should read” post for more info.

I won’t lie, it can be a very disheartening series, in the sense that getting attached to the characters is unavoidable and, considering the themes, most of them (if not all) aren’t treated kindly. In terms of body count within the cast, I think comparing it to Shingeki no Kyojin should give you a good idea.

As for anime vs manga: I prefer the manga because it’s the original content and the art is really good, but the anime does a good job of giving life to this series through the great cast of voice actors (the two main guys are voiced by Suwabe Junichi-san and Tsuda Kenjiro-san who are personal faves of mine and they really work well with the characters).

If you’re not sure about enjoying the series after all that I said, I’d recommend the anime more, to check how you feel. If it turns out that you’re liking it though, then I’d recommend moving onto the manga.

I hope this helps, have a nice day Anon!

don’t know if you’ve seen but gangsta. finally got another chapter! sorry if you have and are just busy though, don’t mean to sound impatient!

chilly-territory:

I didn’t forget and I know, and there’s even a scanlation all done already, but there is something I want sorted out first before posting it, so I apologize for putting you through the wait like this. A summary is the least I can do for the time being, especially seeing there are two very curious details in this chapter that certainly have to be addressed. Spoiler alert.
