i’m still hung up on this. (full novel spoilers) canon kida masaomi

  • starts dating in elementary school
  • as an elementary schooler, leaves the house late at night/early morning to get mikado to catch beetles with him (mikado’s parents are out of town). it is mentioned that mikado has heard that masaomi’s parents are lax, but he remains worried if they would really be okay with their child running out at 2 am…
  • middle school: being new to the city, he has to start a gang to “create a place to belong to”. has a gang war that ends disastrously
  • the next year, high school: re-starts the gang and ends up in hospital with a head wound. no parents appear
  • Vol 3: “Since Masaomi no longer lived with his parents, Saki had become one of the people he felt he could go home to” (besides Mikado and Anri)
  • at 15/16 years old, quits school, leaves the city with his girlfriend and starts working for a highly dangerous character
  • same year: receives multiple fractures and winds up with crutches. has a gunshot wound almost immediately after. still no parents appear
  • mikado’s parents appear to visit mikado, so masaomi’s absence of parents is definitely not an authorial hand-wave. instead we are told mikado’s parents watched out for masaomi a lot when he was a kid

so yes masaomi too has a family situation and we should stop interpreting it as a convenient plothole, i’m 90% sure it’s a deliberate choice of the novelist
