can u give me a brief run down of all the shizuona moments? u can make them short :)
LOL I THINK A BETTER QUESTION WOULD BE CAN I EVER TYPE UP A SHORT REPLY WHEN IT COMES TO CANON SHIZUONA
Volume 6:
- Vorona is in ‘ecstasy’ over the thought of Shizuo’s existence
- Shizuo kicks a car at Vorona, Vorona tries to shoot him. True love in the making.
is mikado an evil guy?
Mikado is an extremely multi dimensional and deep character that the anime leads you to believe has only surface level, basic characterization.
He is not evil per se. He sort of falls into the fallen angel trope when it comes to anime/manga/light novels.
He is someone who becomes bored with the ordinary. Its why he started the dollars. Its why he moved to Ikebukuro. When things become repetitive and mundane he gets bored. He seeks to escape the ordinary and to live in the extraordinary. That’s why Izaya’s warning resounded with him (the one he told him in the anime even) about how even the extraordinary will become ordinary after a few days for someone like him.
The thing is with durarara!! is you cannot categorize any character as explicitly evil or completely righteous. They are meant to linger in that little gray area between the two. Mikado is the perfect example of it.
He is not really evil but he does do evil and bad things in his pursuit of the extraordinary. Because of that you can’t really say he’s completely good either.
MIKADO IS LIKE LIGHT YAGAMI FROM DEATH NOTE. MIKADO DID EXTREME THINGS TO PROTECT HIS IDEA OF JUSTICE.
You can’t just say Mikado is evil or good. He had reasons for his actions. He’s like the bad cop. He’s Anakin Skywalker. He walked the path of wrong to do what he believe is GOOD. seriously guys, check out the novels, it’s such a beautiful read ;_;
Please please please explain why we /should/ like Saki, because after years of being a fan of the show/LN, I still don’t even like her. It’s not hate but there’s just no appeal and I want to know if I’m missing something.
I mean…did you read the light novels? I’m going to assume you did since you mentioned being a fan of them but sometimes people say they are fans of them but didn’t read them.
Look you can not like Saki if you don’t like her. Everyone isn’t always going to like every character in a show and that’s perfectly fine. People develop tastes and if she isn’t to your taste she isn’t to your taste. If you are familiar with Saki’s role and character in the novels and you still don’t care for her it’d be like me trying to argue with someone who read the novels as to why Seiji is actually an interesting character and not a bland piece of white bread. I’m not going to make you like her if you already know everything about her but still don’t like her.
Personally, this is why I like Saki.
Hey! For me you are a durarara expert so i wanted to ask you what is Izaya really feeling for shizuo?I have read many novel spoilers and some translations and shizuos gaiden so izayas too.Izaya said that for the one he love he would be even a masochist. But I am confused .. I am sure/know that Izaya is jealous of shizuo and that this is reason for the hatred but still I have sometimes the feelings that he still likes him dhjbjsbg Can you give me maybe a explantion?
orz i think i wrote about this like 3 years ago and I can’t find it anymore.
Here’s a very very VERY short version of my essay.
Izaya is a bit … no, a LOT like a megalomaniac. I do NOT consider Izaya a sociopath or psychopath. I consider Izaya to be megalomanic, narcissistic, and has god complex with a dose of self righteousness and superiority complex.
Simpler term, Izaya believes he’s the SHIT. He’s awesome and amazing, everyone should bow down to him, he’s intelligent, smart, good looking and he thinks he can CONTROL you. (control and power is a big deal. And it makes sense. People who are megalomaniacs are usually businessmen or politicians etc. why those people can’t even back down and say sorry when they make mistakes in public), He thinks he has power over you. He thinks he’s so smart that he can manipulate everyone and ANYONE into doing what he ‘exactly predicts.’ Basically, he believes he’s a god or demi-god in human form and is truly trying to obtain immortality cuz then he will have true omnipotence. A normal being who just can’t die isn’t a god, that’s just an immortal or a fairy or a monster. What Izaya is trying to achieve is being a GOD. Someone who can’t die AND has power to change others in ways he wants them to change.
Now here comes along Shizuo. Izaya has said that at first he wanted to control him. Then when he couldn’t, he wanted to kill him. And when he couldn’t even KILL him, he got annoyed. Basically Shizuo is the ONLY thing/human that he can’t control. He can’t BUY Shizuo. He can’t manipulate Shizuo. Not only that, Shizuo always DISRUPTS all his careful plan and manipulation. Of course Izaya would be very upset. SHIZUO’S MAIN EXISTENCES PROVES THAT IZAYA IS NOT A GOD, CAN NOT BE A GOD AND NEVER WILL BE A GOD. Even if Izaya were to obtain immortality, he can never truly BE a god until he can prove himself that he can control EVERYONE. When he couldn’t control Shizuo, Izaya tries to sign him off as ‘not human’ just so he has an excuse. But deep down I think Izaya knows. So he isn’t trying to really kill Shizuo yet, that’s admitting defeat. He wants to CONTROL Shizuo still… or again, if he can’t, Izaya will just pretend Shizuo isn’t human and not part of his equation. (But it’s self denial and I think Izaya knows it, which is why he’s so annoyed and is constantly thinking about Shizuo, he’s the glitch of his entire ego.)
A VERY VERY VERY simpler term for all this is that Izaya is like Lex Luthor and Shizuo is Superman. I do think Shizaya is more complex than Lex and Superman ahaha… but in the simplest sense to explain, Izaya is like Lex who has money AND power. And he hates Superman Shizuo who he can’t buy and he can’t control. And every single plan Lex/Izaya tries to cultivate, Shizuo/Superman would come along and destroy it.
So in truth, I do not believe Izaya loves Shizuo. OR in vice versa you can say Izaya DOES love Shizuo in a VERY twisted way. Even Erika has said that the true love couple of Ikebukuro is Shizaya and knowing Narita, he does understand that Shizaya is a famous pairing/couple and he likes to poke fun of it. Narita is a writer who ENJOYS twisted love relationships and Shizaya is in a sense, a very twisted love. But not at all in the normal sense of ‘love’. So I can’t say Shizaya is a true pairing at the same time yes it is partially a canon pairing, it depends on how you describe them.
I think Narita just KNOWS his fans and likes to tease us with shizaya hints like Izaya being masochistic and hinting about Shizuo. Izaya definitely talks about Shizuo when the topic isn’t even related to Shizuo. And same goes for Shizuo too, Shizuo mentions Izaya often. So I believe that Narita likes to tease us with Shizaya but not really making it one of his major pairings or even a canon pairings that he has (Celty/Shinra, Kida/Saki, Sei/Mika or even Mikado/Anri and Namie/Sei etc who obviously have romantic relationships). I won’t look toooo into it. To be honest, I think Shizaya is just fanservice and I’m happy with that, it doesn’t have to be a canonized romantic relationship. I’m okay with it being twisted the way it is.
To end it, No I’m sure Izaya doesn’t want to fuck Shizuo (excuse my language), and I’m hellava sure Shizuo would refuse to make consensual love with Izaya. I do not think there’s any physical attraction or lust between the two nor do I think they really do ‘love’ each other in any romantic normal sense. But they do have a very twisted sense of ‘relationship’ that they are intertwined with, that part is true. And people can choose to canonize them in that regards, that’s alright with me.
So Izaya is a rapist…. ? that’s disgusting
It is left purposefully vague by Narita on both whether or not he and Mikage actually had sex and if they did whether or not it is consensual and after this introduction scene it is never brought up again.
It is my assumption based off of what we do know
- A. that Mikage had feelings for izaya.
- B. That Mikage had ‘suffered’ through some extreme scandal that caused her to drop out of high school.
- C. That Izaya takes victims of abuse (most notably Saki) and shifts their loyalties for that person/people abusing them (In saki’s case- her family, in mikage’s case- her boyfriend) to him instead
- D. That Izaya has a normal sex drive (as is stated by Narita)
That Mikage had feelings for Izaya in high school, feelings that he encouraged in order to shift her loyalties to him from an abusive ex bf mikage had as he does with all of the abuse victims he saves, that they had sex as a result of her feelings for izaya, that Eijirou did not approve of this relationship, that Izaya got Mikage involved in this scandal that made her drop out of high school – deepening Eijirou’s distaste for him as Mikage’s ‘boyfriend’, that they broke up after Mikage dropped out because izaya was bored with her, that after that Mikage realized what kind of person izaya was, and that she now no longer harbors feelings for him of the romantic sort but does not view him as someone worth disliking because he is very transparent in that he is a poison to all he deals with.
The only CANON rapist in durarara is Ran Izumii who tries to rape Earthworm after having beaten her to a pulp but is stopped by Mikage.
Hi hi! Love ur blog~ just wanted to maybe change ur mind bout Izaya not being a sociopath. He is a textbook sociopath, in fact. He has no guilt or remorse, is prone to violence, is extremely aggressive and egotistical, and also blames others to rationalize his own conflict with society -like how he basically blamed the whole war with the colored gangs when he was the mastermind, he separated himself from society in the name of « loving his humans. » Also sociopaths aren’t diagnosed til 15-18.
Hi there and thank you!
I hope you don’t mind my replying to this ask public so I can express my thoughts to others who read what I wrote and might have thought the same thing in relation to it. But I’m afraid you’re going to be hard pressed to change my mind on this. I’ve pretty much seen all the arguments in favor of it over the years but I guess that was technically my first time posting publicly my thought on the matter. Because of that I guess it’s best if I elaborate on it so people can understand where I’m coming from when I say that I do not believe Izaya is a sociopath.
With that said I must express a need for caution for anyone who has not read the novels (this includes yourself, if you haven’t, since I noticed you used anime only examples) That if you are going to read this please be prepared to be completely and utterly spoiled for a good majority of durarara’s ending as this post is going to be filled to the brim with spoilers ranging from at least volume 9 all the way up to volume 13.
Please, please, please read at your own risk.
What are your thoughts on Shizuo’s feeling for Akane? Can you please tell us some?! Thank you!
SHIZUO ADORES AKANE
I think it’s all rooted in the fact that Akane isn’t exactly scared of Shizuo. I mean she is but she doesn’t let that fear hold her back, especially in the beginning when she thinks he is out to kill her family.
But just like Vorona and Celty Akane plays such an important role in Shizuo’s development.
Because Akane, to Shizuo, is someone who he desperately wants to protect. She is someone that he sees as worth protecting and taking care of. This, I think, is because she isn’t scared of him, she fights for the people she loves despite her own weakness, and she faces him/her problems head on.
So she becomes someone worth protecting to Shizuo. And because she is worth protecting she then becomes someone who gives him a strong MOTIVE for learning control over his strength so as to prevent her from getting hurt or scared due to him. Which is why Shizuo begins to really learn how to ‘ignore’ his anger in favor of taking care of/protecting akane back during the kidnapping arc.
There is no one else who can ‘play’ this role for Shizuo.
Both Celty and Vorona are too strong to need protecting and neither would accept his help in such a way. But Akane, at least in the beginning, is perfect. She is a child exposed to the cruelty of the world around her and he was able to protect her from it. He was able to take her away from that cruelty, able to smile at her, and was able to make her happy again. She is the only one who could have given him such a strong motive for control.
Then to make matters 100x worse, because of how he protects her, Akane now wants to get stronger to protect Shizuo ;;;; He doesn’t really know it yet but Akane wants to get stronger through martial arts so as to protect shizuo from ever needing to fight again and if that isn’t the most precious thing in the whole damn world idk what is.
I’m not sure you’re ever going to see this but I wanted to add a small thing that in my opinion is important, if you don’t mind. First I really like your metas on Shizuo and I agree with everything. 🙂
And secondly this is only my two cents but even if Shizuo can prove to himself that he’s no monster by putting his strength to good use and protect someone worthy like Akane (on that I agree entirely), I think he also respects people who don’t need his strength because they’re able to fight for themselves and that might be also why Akane decided to become as strong as him.
For example Shizuo respects Traugott Geissendorfer who’s a martial artist and as he said to Vorona, people who learned how to fight when he had that huge strength since day 1 are much more impressive than himself.
I think Akane serves both purpose to Shizuo’s character actually: when they met, she became that person who showed him it was important that he knew how to control his anger and his overwhelming strength in order to protect her (as you said no other character can play this role for Shizuo). However in the end, the more she’d grow up the less she’d need him
(especially since she’s part of Awakusu-kai) and I don’t think Shizuo is one to depend on people (because he thinks he’s nothing but a thug and that it’s an embarassment to his friends, poor cutie really lacks confidence).
That’s why I think Akane also evolved on her own as she grew up (Drrr SH) to allow their relationship to keep on developing as well.
Akane wanted to be strong at first only in order to defeat him, because she couldn’t trust her own opinion of him after realizing her whole life was a lie, but as she grew up, she probably learned to trust herself and her opinions, hence why “she changed her mind” about Shizuo (even if she definitely already had a crush for him since he rescued her).
I think she’s quite the observer when it comes to him and she probably realized all that you’ve said about the unecessary burden Shizuo is carrying because of his overwhelming strength. Also, by working to be as strong as Shizuo, they’d be equal and with her crush on him and the age difference, it’s probably a good idea for them to be on equal footing, strength-wise. That way, he’ll definitely notice her.
Just my small thoughts. Akane is definitely an intelligent kid.
But seriously thinking, who do you want shizuo to end up with?
That’s actually kind of impossible for me to answer.
At the end of the day I want Shizuo to be happy. I want Shizuo to be loved. I want Shizuo to have a life that he is proud of and to not be scared anymore of becoming a monster.
Seriously
After all the shit he’s gone through I JUST WANT SHIZUO TO BE HAPPY AND IDC WHO IT IS THAT MAKES HIM HAPPY AS LONG AS SOMEONE LOVES HIM AND MAKE HIM HAPPY SOBS
but If I HAD to choose it’d be a tie between Shizuona and Shizukan
On the one hand there is Vorona. She is THE FIRST person to look at Shizuo and tell him ‘You are not a monster. Shizuo-senpai is human" and it breaks my fucking heart because that is ALL Shizuo has ever wanted. She is also someone who is strong enough TO BE Shizuo’s partner. She is someone who can handle his strength, would accept his strength, would even LOVE his strength. She is someone who has never experienced love before shizuo and the lord only knows how Shizuo is a man with alot of love to give and no one to give it to. She is someone perfect for him to pour his love into and he has even referred to her as his precious kouhai.
But on the other hand there is Akane. Akane whose reason for training now is to ensure that she can become strong enough to protect Shizuo. She wants to become strong enough to make sure Shizuo never has to fight again. She wants to take care of Shizuo and it’s clear that they both mean alot to each other. I love to play around with the idea of Akane getting older and becoming head of the awakusu and Shizuo being her bodyguard in name while in actuality she does most of the fighting cause she doesn’t want Shizuo fighting anymore. Akane is also a sweet girl. An accepting girl and an understanding girl. She is someone who can more easily return Shizuo’s love and affections while with Vorona it’s more of a learning thing. But with Akane she is much too young for Shizuo. She needs to grow several years first before the relationship can grow and who knows by the time she grows up if she’ll find someone else or if Shizuo will have fallen completely for Vorona.
