Cheslock: I’m the Actual Devil™

The F5′s song begins with the lines, “Who’s callin’ me out of this coma? Who’s got that sweet aroma.”

Could both of these lines be references to Bravat’s blue sect? The people there are brainwashed, so they could be thought of being in a sort of coma. Plus, they are put to sleep in order to take their blood.

The aroma could refer to the incense Bravat uses, or maybe it could mean that this music hall has a better smell as there are no incenses to put its patrons to sleep.

Thoughts?

I think it’s going to wind up referring to one of the Lords waking up/coming back alive after a blood transfusion.

I hadn’t thought of that. Perhaps…

I thought the lyrics might be from Sebastian’s demonic pov. Like a reference to being summoned by the earl. The “sweet” scent of a soul, etc. The lyrics sound predatory…. The song of a hungry (and previously bored) demon.

I agree with @abybweisse

The lyrics really made me remember the contract between Seb and Ciel, especially since it wouldn’t be impossible that Seb helped Cheslock with the songs/lyrics or entirely wrote them…

Maybe Seb just wanted to have fun at everyone’s expense, especially when they’re supposedly going against Bravat who’s always preaching about stars and radiance

I think it really depends on who wrote the lyrics…

The Real Cheslock

erebus-cheslock:

shinigami-mistress:

All of the F5 were given personas to portray, with the exception of Cheslock, who was told to just be himself. This should have made things very easy for him, but he actually didn’t seem too happy about it.

Even if this was annoying or upsetting, it should have meant he had an easier job than the others. He just had to be himself.

After their performance, all the F5 met with their fans. Most of them had no issue, except for Clayton…

…and Cheslock.

This should be an easy task for Cheslock. He just has to be himself, but here he is giving someone advice but then saying not to call him a nice guy. Why is it? What is the one member of the F5 who is not supposed to be portraying a specific image so diligent with keeping up a particular appearance?

Perhaps Cheslock’s persona is an act, but one he crafted long before the creation of the F5. Now that he’s been told to just be himself, it’s become more difficult for him because now he has to act while pretending it’s not an act.

Thoughts?

I was quite intrigued by this panel too. Wrote about it a bit here

It is interesting that the most forward and extroverted member of the fags during the Weston Arc turned up to this arc with the most vacant expression we’ve ever seen him wear and has only been very subdued for all his appearances since except in the moment when he took offence to Sebastian’s encouragement and when onstage as part of the F5, which gives credence to the idea that Cheslock’s onstage persona and what we saw of him at Weston (his debut and Cricket Tournament in particular) is not him being himself.

We have to remember that Ciel and Sebastian only knew Cheslock (and the fags as a group) for a few months at least, and even then barely interacted with them. Ciel certainly had no intention with getting close to any of them, choosing to look in upon the ‘closed world’ as an outsider. It would stand to reason, then, that they only have a superficial idea of who Cheslock is as a person.

Ciel chose characters for the remaining F5 to play because their usual personalities didn’t make for a good idol (lol), but told Cheslock to ‘be himself’ because what they saw of his outward persona suited their purposes. But it may well be that Cheslock is not being himself.

Not to say that Cheslock’s onstage persona is fake, but it may be only a facet of his overall person (which is very likely). I have a few theories as to why, but it will be interesting to see if Yana expands on the whole ‘personality set-up’ of the F5 in future chapters 😉

Is anyone else wondering how the fuck Cheslock not only has two tone hair but has such a ridiculously elaborate hairstyle typically seen on punk rockers? Which barber does he go to? Did Gregory mess with his hair?

Ideas of what went down:

1. Cheslock asked Violet to draw him the hairstyle as dictated by himself. Once it was done the young Cheslock marched to the nearest barbers and slammed the sketch on the front desk and said: “Can you do this?” And the rest is history!

2. Cheslock had eccentric relatives who helped him style his hair in all sorts of ways until he discovered one he liked the best and has kept ever since.

3. Cheslock experimented on his hair himself after starting at Weston, with encouragement by Violet. After a lot of trial and error he finally got the look he wanted. But not before he accidently dyed his entire head of hair a florescent pink.

Cheslock: Edward, what on earth’s the matter? Why’re you crying?
Edward: The film! I won’t be in the film!!
Cheslock: But weren’t you in the arc in the…?
Edward: YES!
Cheslock: But your family were…
Edward: YES!!
Cheslock:
Cheslock: HA.
Edward: How dare you laugh at me, you’re not in it either!
Cheslock: Yes, but I was never SUPPOSED to be!
Edward: *bawls*
Cheslock: I can help you kill the guy who cut you out of the film. Purple House has plenty of places to hide bodies.
Edward:
Edward: I’ll forget to be a gentleman… just for today.
Cheslock: RIGHT-O!

Did you know that Cheslock’s current character design is a remake of one of Ronald’s character design ideas?

Source: Yana’s blog post May, 2012 (X)

[…] The outward appearance of the purple house’s prefect‘s fag (such a long title, lol) actually is a remake of Ronald’s character design that was rejected. He also wore big glasses, but the design got rejected since I thought there would be too many fancy looking people in the collection division otherwise. I really liked the design though, so I’m happy it could
eventually

see the light of day (lol)

So if Yana had decided on Cheslock’s character design for Ronald, we’d have got to see something like this 😀

Reasons for Cheslock’s insecurity

shinigami-mistress:

erebus-cheslock:

Before I post my essay regarding my theory that Cheslock is secretly insecure, Here I will detail what I think are possible reasons for it. Unlike the essay, this post is concerned rather with the whys than the hows.

So, based on the idea that Cheslock is in reality a very unsure and sensitive young man, hiding behind a character of confidence and wildness, here are my theories as to how this came about.

Theory 1

  1. Cheslock was never praised for his musical genius, perhaps due to the adults and peers in his life held his eccentric tastes in contempt, and so when he arrived at Weston he found his true home and friends.
  2. Violet was the first one to compliment his talents, and to accept his eccentric tastes, and so he craves this validation from him above all others.
  3. He still carries a deep insecurity based on past ridicule for his appearance (overshadowing his talent) – so he bears a strong ‘them and us’ mentality because he believes only the eccentrics can truly understand and appreciate him as a person, while all others will only ridicule and look down on him.
  4. Any mention of his appearance triggers a knee-jerk reaction of rage as he immediately perceives the comment to be mockery (as he did with Sebastian in Chap. 119).
  5. He plays the part of the wild eccentric in front of others as a defense against ridicule and to abate his own feelings of inferiority and anger.

Theory 2

  1. Cheslock was praised for his musical talent, but even more heavily criticised and schooled by his parents/authority figures before attending Weston, and as such harbours great insecurity as well as pride in his playing, and so will only play in public when encouraged (as in Weston Arc).
  2. He suppressed his eccentric tastes due to above strict and controlling authority figures, until he enrolled at Weston and entered Purple House. Meeting Violet helped him express his tastes as he saw fit, and thus he looks the way he does today.
  3. Still, he feels insecure because of the insults he receives and how people overlook his talent because of his appearance. His controlled past also fuels his insecurity about his current self. He sees any comment to be an insult on his person and reacts violently.
  4. Cheslock still feels he has not ‘found himself’ so to speak, feeling the need to perform an aggressively wild persona in front of others to assert dominance and confidence, while his true persona remains hidden. He is naturally much calmer and almost dour in expression (as in any panel where he isn’t behaving ‘like a hooligan’).

Theory 3

  1. He feels like his only defining characteristic is his eccentricity and his musical talent, so he feels an immense pressure to perform accordingly in order to gain any kind of appreciation, prestige and appeal. Thus he is a deep perfectionist unwilling to show off unless he knows he can perform perfectly.
  2. Violet knows this, and so does not indulge his theatrics (as in Cheslock’s Purple Burnout move).
  3. Cheslock’s desire to perform the part of the eccentric and musician accounts for Cheslock’s wild mood swings.
  4. Feeling like he is only defined by his talent and eccentricity, Cheslock deeply desires to be seen as his own person – an ordinary young man, but does not know how to express this. This makes him opposite to Edward, who believes himself to be an ordinary person but is extraordinary in his own right.

What do you guys think? Do you support any of these theories or have any of your own? 🙂

I like this idea a lot, and you might be on to something. It’s possible that he just never felt like he fit in and, at some point, he stopped trying. He’s going to Weston, so his parents probably have high expectations of him. Instead of trying to be what his parents and society wanted, he created this rebel identity. His scar could even be part of it. If he was to dress like Edward and have a similar hairstyle, he’d still have the scar. If he was to act and look as is expected of him, he’d still be identified by the scar.

Sebastian gave them characters to play, but told Cheslock to be himself. Wouldn’t it be ironic if he had been playing a part all along?
