Uta & the Undertaker are characters of a similar type I know I’m completely weak to, so no surprise that I fell for them both at first sight and the fact the respective stories gave them a role (that’s still) hidden under a lot of mystery is only amplifying these feelings.
For Guts, the first three volumes of Berserk just left me o_o in general since I had no idea as to what was going on, until Guts’ flashback began and then it was impossible not to love him from the moment he was three and held his adoptive mom’s hand through the plague killing her.
the character you never expected to love so much:
Ayato (TG):the reason I started TG and yet when I actually met him in the Aogiri arc, I found him so emo and pretentious that a part of me really wanted to punch him in the face.
It changed when we found out about him being the black Rabbit in ch143 and :Re never gave me one reason to stop loving him. The fact he’s currently the only one who’s more or less “immune” to Kaneki right now (so to speak) is also definitely a reason why I’m still particularly fond of him. 🙂
Diedrich (Kuroshitsuji): I initially was so meh about him because he appeared for, like, ten pages until the GW arc and yet the fandom was crazy about him, mainly because of the popular ship with Vincent which just made me cringe even more, since VinDee is one of my (extremely rare) NOTPs.
But then he saved the GW arc so I fell in love in ch101, even more so when a part of his previous fans turned their back on him upon discovering what he now looked like in his late 30s, which was total hypocrisy. Btw, I totally miss him :3
Serpico (Berserk): He unexpectedly grew on me over the first arcs with him and now he’s one of my absolutely favorite characters. He started being interesting from the moment he showed he was different from the rest of Farnese’s knights + that he was a skilled fighter, which was early after meeting him, but I think it’s hard to grasp how deep and complex he really is before his flashback of vol 22.
Now, Roderick’s character becoming more prominent in the group/plot led to Serpico starting to act a little creepy, which is why he’s probably the next one whose issues and development will be tackled on, but he’s still my favorite character with Guts, Casca and Puck.
the character you relate to the most:
Ciel (Kuroshitsuji) & Takizawa (TG) for the same reason, which has to do with understanding what a nasty inferiority complex feels like.
There is no one in Berserk I directly relate to, tho’ (then again it’s probably a good thing considering how intensely fucked up the story is). :3
the character you’d slap (currently):
Amon (TG): don’t get me wrong, I love him, but it’s highly past the time to wake up and to stop hiding from the reality of these last 4 years. Fortunately (for me), Donato is on his way and so is Takizawa (probably), so hopefully I won’t need to because realization should be happening soon. 😀
real!Ciel (Kuroshitsuji): ‘cause he’s the reason Agni was killed, that Soma and Lizzie are crying, that Ed is distraught and that our!Ciel is going to pass out once he’s finished reminiscing, without mentioning that he possibly was involved with his own parents’ murder, so I can’t forgive him. At the same time, he died horribly and he’s not directly responsible for his own revival, so I’ll have to settle for whoever did this instead and for now, since we still lack enough hints about the mastermind, I’ll go for Bravat.
Griffith (Berserk): Rickert’s holy gesture of vol 38 still is one of the most absolute badass moments of the entire series and I want to see it happening again, preferably more than once. Don’t get me wrong, it’s because Griffith is a fabulously written character who makes for an amazing villain that any Berserk fan has the right to write this. xD
three favorite characters (in order of preference):
The questions didn’t specify if I had to give my Top 3, so I chose not to:
Takizawa, Ayato, Nico (TG)
Tanaka,
Claudia, Lau (Kuroshitsuji)
Serpico,
Puck, Silat (Berserk)
In general, there is hardly ever a character I truly can’t stand, unless they’re precisely written not to be likable (Griffith from Berserk for example) and it’s always hard to rank favorite characters anyway, so I picked from all the characters I truly enjoy.
a character you liked at first but don’t anymore:
As I said, it’s rare for me to end up really disliking anyone but… -_-
Arima (TG): sorry :// because I tried to like him again after noticing that I was becoming more and more “meh” about his character, really I did (knowing that I was never his biggest fan either), but the more we delve into the truth, the more I can’t stop rolling my eyes at everything that he knew and chose
(not)
to do.
I mean, he’s obviously not the only character to make bad decisions (*waves at Kaneki*) and his life was really sad, so I don’t dislike or blame him, but it’s as if everything we now learn regarding him is meant to be taken with an ironic smile (omakes++) and as such I’m not willing to try understanding him anymore.
Grell (Kuroshitsuji): I could have said Ronald for the same reason, which is mostly because of the fandom’s huge infatuation (and thus, huge bias) with both of them (with Grell in particular though). It’s actually extremely stiffling with the constant discourse, especially when Grell’s character is not above criticism, just like anyone else.
So I won’t expand, but I’m now mostly indifferent with whatever Grell does or says and same regarding their biggest fans.
Sonia (Berserk): I think (?) that I liked her when I first read the series but honestly I can’t really stand her anymore. I don’t know why precisely, but I wonder if it wouldn’t be because she’s actually a true psychic/medium which is rare enough and yet, despite this, she’s one of Griffith’s most faithful followers.
I mean, I can’t blame her because she’s a kid, she went through a lot and Femto is beyond powerful, but I don’t know if it is that she can’t see behind the appearances or that she won’t because she doesn’t want to let the dream go. Either way, I’m not a fan even if I seem to recall liking her initially.
Okay so, old thought using two different translations, and obviously I might be reading way too much into this, but I find it interesting that flashback!Uta seemed to have been discovering that the “No face” mask/identity was well-known from the CCG back when he was already leading the 4th ward.
I mean, he didn’t even know Arima when the guy was already a legend after defeating Owl…
and also…
he didn’t seem to know why he was so strong. Of course, he could just be bullshitting us and Yomo, but you know, listening to his flashback…
it’s as if he… just popped up one day from wherever he was being kept before (since I still think he’s the most likely candidate to have the biggest link to the One Eyed Washuu) and he had to learn everything as it came to him.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
you know, maybe flashback/young!Uta is to the One Eyed Washuu what Sasaki was to Kaneki?
Because the similarities between Uta and the One Eyed Washuu are real:
And besides, you know how the current situation is similar to the one 100 years ago, because Furuta got inspired by what happened with the Nagaraj?
Anyway, whatever happened, he possibly was held in captivity by the Washuus/the CCG/V for a long while, which could be why (as a parallel to Haise)
he initially had no memory of being the One Eyed Washuu or about his past. This could also explain why his name is simply Uta: he chose a new identity for himself when he got his reboot, just like Haise did.
I also don’t know how he escaped from V/the Washuus but maybe…
So then, Uta found himself leading the 4th ward because he was the strongest around and because he had no idea as to what else to do with his life, but slowly he started getting all of his memory back, the way it happened for Kaneki…
…which would be when, I guess, he started tattooing his body with a lot of extremely significant patterns, that are meaningful regarding the situation 100 years ago but also the current one (since, again, there is a parallel).
Finally, Kaneki as a character does have a lot of parallel with Uta, especially if Uta also used to be the OEK as the One Eyed Washuu, which is why I guess Uta always referred to him as a very special customer (even back as Haise)…
…because he must have seen these parallels as well.
Honestly, I think Uta might have gotten sick of leading the 4th ward for a reason related to his possible past as the One Eyed Washuu & one OEK of the timeline…
…which is literally similar to Kaneki never wanting to become the OEK but doing so anyway, because he had no other reason to live on when Arima & Eto asked.
TL;DR I just wanted to point out the following parallels:
100 years ago, the One Eyed Washuu was defeated by the old CCG and “was driven underground”.
We don’t know what happened afterwards, but maybe the old CCG or the Washuus managed to get his body back and held onto him for years.
But isn’t it interesting that, in the Anteiku raid arc at the end of TG’s first part, Kaneki lost against the CCG (Amon++) and was driven underground too, facing Arima at V14, being defeated and taken by the CCG to become Sasaki Haise?
After escaping from where he was kept (?), “young”!Uta was tasked with leading the 4th ward because he was the strongest around, but this led to a conflict with Arima and the CCG almost destroying the place:
Uta dropped the leader role after the fiasco though, which was 200% fine with him anyway, because he was enjoying working as a mask maker way more.
But doesn’t this remind anyone of Kaneki becoming the OEK as soon as Haise remembered everything, because he was the strongest around, but this leading to a series of misfortunate events too, because Kaneki sucked as the OEK since he never wanted that role?
I’m just saying: Kaneki became the OEK, which ultimately led to a remake of what happened 100 years ago with the Nagaraj and, at the same time, Kaneki and Uta both sucked as leaders, but that’s because both were given roles that they never really wanted => that’s some real link between these two for me.
Bonus: Uta’s reaction to this?
And this is super funny because if Uta really was the One Eyed Washuu, he got a second chance at life, even after fucking things up 100 years ago and with the 4th ward: now he does what he likes, which is being a mask maker and just clowning around with his old pals…
because he’s always been “quite the reprobate and that’s why [he] wants to stay in the thick of it” (from :Re ch116). Kinda reminiscing of Kaneki hopefully getting the future and family that he desired as long as he can find a way to solve the current crisis and despite failing terribly as the OEK, no?

I take Francis having a ponytail back. I was wrong. Thanks! 🙂
Yeah, Frances doesn’t wear her hair in a ponytail. ^^
Maybe Lizzy will have her hair in a similar fashion as her mom when she’s older. She surely won’t have her twin tails forever and I guess loose hair wasn’t ‘proper’ for noble ladies back then. Apparently, buns and chignons were quite popular in that time. (Here’s some information on Victorian hairstyles.)
But now I kinda want to see Lizzy with a ponytail, too. XD
Frances did use to have a ponytail tho, at least for her fencing matches 😀
Ohh, you’re right! XD
wait actually, now that you’re mentioning it @thedarkestcrow (and Anon), I totally dig the idea of Lizzie getting a ponytail as her next hairdo, maybe to mark a change consequential to her next step into her character development?Especially considering that her mom once wore her hair like that yes (and Sensei confirmed that Frances totally is Lizzie’s role model) + that
even Claudia did (at some point) too!
Besides, it would certainly be the perfect way to show an even bigger gain of maturity, when one’s comparing the cute pigtails she’s been wearing ever since childhood to the long, more adult-like, ponytail!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
there is a natural evolution of the haircut of Phantomhivian women through life:
childhood: pigtails (Lizzie but ?? => Claudia/Frances)
gaining maturity/beginning of adulthood: ponytails (Claudia & Frances)
motherhood: hairbun (Claudia & Frances)
seriously now I totally want Lizzie to start wearing a ponytail… xDD
